I work for a trade association. Our Holiday Party is actually not bad at all. We take off from 12:00 - 5:00, go to a nice restaurant, get all the food and drinks we want. There is a small Secret Santa gift exchange and other than that we're on our own.
DW's is a night party, but they go all out (software developer). They too don't have any awards or anything like that. Food and drinks and music. We hang out with the ten or so co-workers on her team and drink, eat and joke around.
I don't seem to have the negative experience that some of you have/had.
