Yeah, that was "our" earthquake, since it was 80 miles directly west of us.
The couch started shaking rapidly, and I thought it was DW's knitting. My usual joke: "What, is this an earthquake?" Then it started shaking more strongly and slowly and that continued for about 20 seconds. Not that big. Not big enough to get under the table, but big enough to think "you know, we should probably get under the table."
Checked out the
earthquake map and after 10 minutes or so it came up as a 7.4 off shore (later downgraded to 7.0).
So out to the cliff for tsunami watching. We're on a cliff about 80 feet high, so I'm sure we're out of tsunami range, but one neighbor took off for higher ground.
Saw absolutely nothing, tsunami-wise. If there's gonna be a tsunami, I sure as heck want to see it. Apparently it was a side-slip type of earthquake, which doesn't tend to produce tsunamis. I sure would have expected to see something anyway, but I think I got out there too late. My understanding is that tsunamis travel at about 900 MPH in deep water, so it could have arrived just 5 minutes after the quake.
There have been some aftershocks -- I think we'll stay off the beach for a few days.
