I know this would be trumatic for a parent, but it seems like every other week, the local news here takes you through the separation by surgury of joined infants.

I agree.   I'm all for sensationalistic TV news, but I'd prefer seeing more one-eyed kittens to BORING conjoined twins.

At one point, these conjoined twins were rumored to be featuring in an ABC sitcom. (They're still conjoined, they were not separated at birth.)
