It is very hard to believe that Omar is speaking for his father, because Bin Laden has not repented and he has not stopped his violence.

He might be sorry like a child is sorry for being punished - not sorry for what he did but the punishment.
He might be sorry that because of 9/11 the Telibaun and he are out of power.

Frankly, I don't believe Osama said he was sorry and I think this apology is specious.

If Osama wants to apologize (which is incomprehensible, considering what he did), and wants people like me to actually believe he is sorry, let him do it himself. Otherwise he always can/will say that his son made it up.

And maybe, just maybe, that's what happened.

I am more inclined to think that such an apology indicates a rapid decline in Osama's failing health inspiring his son to invent an apology, rather than Osama experiencing a change of heart. His son is probably hoping to get him into a hospital.
