I am not saying this would make much difference, but how much of that debt is creditcard dept that is paid off every month. Five years ago we were 95% cash for all purchases. Today we are 80% credit card. Never carry a balance forward. In fact quite often will pay it off before it is billed. How many other things like this are in that calculations.

It is like quoting any historical average or comparing data. We use to have very high income tax rates, but he also had very liberal deductions so that the real rate was much lower. I remember in the 60's folks saying it was the average wage earner that was hit the most as he had little or know tax deductions.
