Quirky movies that weren't popular

Repo Man, Strange Brew, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. Buckaroo Banzai and Yellowbeard were already mentioned. I could go on for hours. Not sure if I own more than a couple of non-quirky movies, except for my Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne collections. Oh yeah, Fargo (or was that too popular?), Rushmore, Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist, Secretary, Super, Clerks (and the rest of the Jay and Silent Bob series, especially Dogma).

I keep hoping for Local Hero to show up on one of the movie channels so I can get a recording of it. Rustler's Rhapsody is another quirky one.

Local Hero is a great movie. I was able to get a copy from my dad's estate.

Looked through my closest pile of DVDs, and I saw a few worth adding.

The Lost Boys, Willow, The Goonies, The Evil Dead Trilogy, Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland (too successful?), The Princess Bride (?), Eating Raoul, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, A Boy and His Dog, They Live!.

Local Hero is my favorite movie of all time...you are the only other person I've ever known who has ever mentioned it.

Another vote for Local Hero since I used to live in Houston and because it has Wedge Antilles in it.

+1. A very fun movie.

I'd add "Time Bandits"--another fun Terry Gilliam movie with a similar feel.

On a completely different page: I liked a movie called "The Silent Partner." 1978, Elliott Gould, Christopher Plummer. Dark, a bit violent, clever script. But, it was not a commercial success.

Still think we are moving back to the UK in 3 years or so. Just slowly starting the process of getting rid of EVERYTHING I don't need. Although.....multisystem DVD's players have gotten a lot cheaper these days. But I am too cheap to want to ship more than I have to that far. Everything will eventually get sold or given away. Golf clubs .....bicycle ....probably everything but my mandolin, and most of my clothes (which can fit into one small closet and one small chest of drawers).

I assume you are flying. You may find it relatively inexpensive to pay for extra or overweight baggage to shift some of your goods. We do that often.

Hard Eight

A fav of mine, when I'm feeling nasty. Almost no one I know has heard of this, the best movie ever featuring the casino game craps. Hard Eight, from 1996. The cast, however, doesn't sound like a B movie: Gwenyth Paltrow, Samuel Jackson, John C Reilly, Philip Baker Hall and Philip Seymore Hoffman. Box office gross was just $215,000. Great soundtrack. Very dark movie, but kind of a happy ending for being so dark.
Many great lines-"you think, what, you can walk thru this life without being punished?" And "In my experience, if you don't know how to count cards, you oughta stay away from blackjack."

WELL THIS IS INTERESTING! A few hours ago, I posted on this site that I liked "Waking Ned Devine".

Just now, I logged onto my Netflix account to look for something watch today and.......right front and center as a "recommendation" (wasn't there yesterday) was "Waking Ned Devine".

Not sure I like this 'helpfulness'. Not sure what to make of it either way. Coincidence on such an obscure movie? I don't think so.

Not sure I like this 'helpfulness'. Not sure what to make of it either way. Coincidence on such an obscure movie? I don't think so.

Kinda spooked me. Maybe one of our computer experts might comment. I suspect that there is something residual in my PC that Netflix picked up on? I would doubt N'flix is reading FIRE and cross referencing.

Does make you wonder.... I'm not naive and realize that 'there is no privacy' anywhere, but this extremely strange, scary and interesting at the same time.

It is unsettling. I am especially cautious of websites like Facebook for that same reason, and always make sure to clear my browser before and after, and also log out when I leave. It never occurred to me that Netflix would be in that category, but they do want to be leaders profiling individual taste and making recommendations.

My favorite 'quirkies' are: 'Barfly' (1987), with Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway. My most favorite is: 'Two-Lane Blacktop' (1971) with James Taylor and Dennis Wilson (Beach Boys) starring in the only movie they were ever in (also had Warren Oates in it). Anybody I have ever loaned or showed these movies to hated them, but I love them, so I dunno.

I'm the only other person who liked Two-Lane Blacktop.
We borrowed Vanishing Point (which of course reminds me of it) to watch last night and were hugely disappointed that it was damaged, right in the middle. I am eagerly awaiting the replacement disk from Netflix tomorrow so we can finish watching it.
I love the car chase scenes.

Forgot to put Local Hero on my original list....it's on my shelf as well. As well as Time Bandit. I have the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers series which I kind of think as a strange long interrupted movie. Also just looked again and noticed the two Snowy River movies which I enjoyed. Am I the only person who really liked Stardust?

The original Sleuth with Michael Caine and Sir Laurence Olivier. When I first saw it in a theater it was more than half over before I realized there are only 2 people in the movie. It took me a long time to find a dvd of the original.
