Class of 2015

Looks like the following is growing!

So, new question.....What is the first major event you have planned after retirement?

For us, I plan to hike the Appalachian trail, while DW catches up with her family. After the AT, a year+ on travel abroad we think...

What are you thinking of doing?

Trip on the Amazon.

Checking in

Trip on the Amazon.

Very cool! That sounds like a lot of fun!

DW and I have been looking at "slow travel" - 30+ days in a furnished apartment, etc.. So far we've added Thailand, Grenada, Belize, Australia and New Zealand to our first series of visits.

Following year is looking like England, Ireland, France, Germany and possibly Poland.

Sounds expensive, but we believe we can mitigate the costs buy not having a house/mortgage and the associated insurances and utility payments.

We plan to home base out of DW's parents farm in between trips.

We haven't done any extended traveling, so our first trip will be the great experiment. We plan to start in the southeast and road trip to west and north, ending up in Seattle or Vancouver. From there take a 40 day+ deeply discounted cruise to Australia to get us started.

I am curious about the Class of 2015.
What is your "number"? As in, what is the nest egg total you are striving for to retire?
Also, when you retire will you have a mortgage?

Me: $1,400,000 Yes mortgage, although I don't have one now :)

My number is 5 million. No mortgage on primary house, one rental paid off, still have small (-80k) on 2 others. 2015 should do it. :greetings10:

I am out. I don't have "One More Year Syndrome" but "One Less Year Syndrome" Instead of retiring December of 2015, I am retiring October 14, 2014! My last day of work will be 10/13/14 so the first day of retirement will be 10/14/14.

I won't go into all the details but working for my company is like living in a Concentration Camp lately. My apologies to any former POWs but I don't know what else to call it.

I am giving up a bunch of pension money by going out one year early. $9,000 per year, $90,000 over 10 years, $270,000 over 30 years if I live a long time like my Mom. That is not counting the 3% COLAS so I am probably walking away from $300,000 if I live to 85.

But guess what? It is NOT worth it! Money is not worth your health! When I announced to my husband I would rather commit suicide than report to the Concentration Camp for the next two years. I realized I was done!

I prayed about it and God said "Get out as soon as you turn 54, you don't need to worry about money, I will supply your needs."

I know religion is not allowed on this site but I seriously got confirmation from God to get the heck out of there so I am going.

I will all of you the best and happy retirement when your time comes.

I took my name off of the list and renumbered it.

I already feel free just making the decision!

I am out - Need to postpone at least one year

I am more in than ever! Have had a couple of weeks off and was very busy the whole time. I will have plenty to do without having to report to the office for 40 hours a week. I can finally say, "I retire next year."

448 days to go.

I'm still a bit worried that I will succumb to OMY syndrome again but I've started counting the remaining mondays to motivate me to stick to my March 2015 date. 59 Mondays to go !

I'm worried I'm going to succumb to OLY (one less year) syndrome. I'll keep plugging away.

I am starting to take a few more days off. For the next (or should I say LAST) fourteen months of work, I will be taking every other Monday off. I was going to take every other Friday off, but I got to thinking about it, and most people are in a good mood on Friday. Going to work on Friday is not so bad. It's Mondays that people don't like, so I'll skip the staff meetings and pissy attitudes.

Good point on Mondays vs Fridays.

58 Mondays to go for me. Of those I will probably take 5 off, and then there are another 6 holidays that fall on a Monday, so I have 47 working Mondays to go.

I almost never take Fridays off unless I have something schefuled. Fridays are about half the stress as any other workday so for me its a no brainer. Its also our only casual dress day and free donuts. Mondays are my numero uno choice to eliminate.

Great plan. I did the same. Even without the free donuts ;)

Well I am joining the Feb of 2015 FIRE crew! My wife and I have been doing a lot of work on understanding our expenses and needs going forward and both FireCalc and our FA agree. We can retire next year. I will be 54 next month and wife is 55. We have three kids. 18, 15, 15.

Next year is the target because we will have our first son in college, i have some stock vesting, and i plan to be cured and recovered from my Hodgkin's lymphoma chemo by then!

I am super excited to be able to dream about our next chapter.

................ I want to go back to Colorado for a couple years, and do all those outdoor things I enjoy but never could do much of because a job got in the way...hiking, camping, backpacking, week-long photography trips, etc. I also want to live somewhere near a ski resort and fulfill a bucket list item of being a ski bum for a season :)

I respectfully suggest, if you are in Colorado anyway, that you seriously look into whitewater kayaking!

I probably would, except that I don't know how to swim, and the possibility of getting submersed in water, terrifies me. I don't even like getting into hot tubs, or baths :)

Funny story around this...when I was kid, the movie Jaws came out, and I begged my parents to take me to see it. That one scene where the guy is diving near the underwater wreck, and the decapitated head floats by - that did it. Never cared anything about getting into any water after that.

One of these days, I should go to an adult swim class and learn. Just never had the time nor the motivation. Maybe once I can take off a year or two and enjoy myself, I'll add that to the list.

I remember that scene all too well ! I screamed like a little girl ..... oh ... wait, I WAS a little girl !

October 2015

Looking to retire before 55th birthday in October 2015.Enjoy my job as a mid level finance executive but can already see that the next wave of young go getters are nipping at my heels. I think I have just enough quick left in my step to get to 2015. I currently get 6 weeks of vacation which affords me plenty of time to practice retirement. I took off 2 weeks in December starting 12/18/13 to 1/6/14. Spent the days before Christmas lounging about the house having coffee with wife(retired 1year) and her girlfriends each morning. Week after Christmas was in Vegas ringing in the new year. If this is a prelude to retirement, sign me up. First few months of retirement, we hope to travel returning to Texas in mid December. In 2016 I plan on some travel, volunteer work, occasional consulting and perhaps taking a few classes at the local community college. Really love this site. At work and when socializing with my peers, I must conduct myself as if I will continue my career for the next 10 years. Here, I can state otherwise.
Rock and Roll Class of 2015

56 Mondays to go and I wonder if I'm going to make it. FIRECalc has me at 100% even after I take out 20% for a potential correction. Fidelity RIP has me with a 90% chance to age 95. I'm starting to feel like I have enough cushion now. Now if I only had the guts to graduate myself to the class of 2014 !

My bet is you'll be making posts like this one into the 2020's... :)
