In my haste to snap trave deals, I forgot I had schedule a Jury Duty in January. Not only that this is a reschedule of Jury Dutyy that I was called on while I was in Europe. Is it ok to reschedule again? Anybody has any experience with delay multiple times. Any penalty?

I suggest that you contact the authority that summoned you for jury duty and ask them.

It matters what your local does... here you can reschedule at least twice and I think even more... up to 6 months IIRC..

BUT, the only thing they do make you do is stay on the day of the week you were called... IOW, if you were scheduled for a Mon you have to reschedule for some other Mon...

When I was working, we were told we could postpone twice as a maximum.

The ability to say "no" to jury duty is the active duty military benefit I will miss the most when I leave the service. (OK not really. Well, maybe.)

It’s the day before my trip. I might risk it and see if they call me. If they do I might explain my dilemma, if they don’t like it, I won’t show up. Do you see any problem with that.

Could be you can get out of jury duty based on age. Depends on state:
The ages at which seniors can be exempted or excused are 65 (Mississippi and South Carolina), 70 (Alabama, Alaska, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia), 72 (North Carolina and Wyoming), 75 (Arizona, Indiana, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania), and 80 (Hawaii and South Dakota).

Is it just one day and you have to show up? In our county it's a month at a time and you call every Monday to see if they need you for the week.

Once I heard my juror number and thought the recording said call back tomorrow in fact I'm sure it said call back tomorrow. But I got a call the next morning saying where are you, I managed to get there in 45 minutes but ended up not being called for the jury. I still think they screwed up on the recording..as for your stuff, you should be able to find the rules for your state or country online and see what they say about postponement. I'd do that first and then try to figure out what to do. Now any reasonably intelligent person can figure out how to not be seated on a jury. I've been the in box twice and not been seated for the actual proceedings.

It seems to me if you are on vacation you are on vacation. Just let them know. It shouldn't be a big deal.

Just as an FYI, from what they say when you go to jury duty... that over 50% of people do NOT show up... if you do not then nothing is going to happen...

Me, I do not mind jury duty.... I think it is part of being a citizen... and I have been on a few interesting cases...

No problem, as long as you don't mind the judge issuing a bench warrant for your arrest. Then when you get back to the U.S. (if you're going out of the country) you'll be arrested at the airport and held until they can determine whether the jurisdiction that issued the warrant is willing to come and get you (probably not for a jury-duty bench warrant). This can take a day or two. Oh, and don't come back on a Friday. Chances are good you'll be in jail until Monday.

Then when you do get back you'll be arrested in your home jurisdiction and hauled into court to explain to a judge why you didn't show up. If arrested in the afternoon this could mean a night or weekend in jail. "I was going on a trip" is not a good reason and will almost certainly irritate the judge. You may then spend anywhere from a day to a week in jail and have to pay a heavy fine.

Other than that, no problem.:D

Well Walt I'm guessing that was tongue-in-cheek but people just dumping jury duty is getting to be a big problem. More then a few places are getting pretty harda@@ about it. Really can't blame them either if you don't have enough people for a jury everyone's time is wasted.

Yes, it depends somewhat on how liberal the jurisdiction is and the "culture" of the courts there. In MD where I used to work she'd probably get away with it, at least once.

It is definitely not something I'd even think about here in WV. For sure, your butt is going to be in jail for some period of time.

The last time I was called for jury duty, we had to be there at 7:30 am. All 100+ of us were escorted into a building and sat for a while before we were split into two groups. One group was sent home after 10:00 am (too many people showed up) and the second group was there to sort out who was qualified for the one case that was scheduled. I didn't qualify and went home.

80 people wasted a day, paid $5 for parking and made $9.

Great system. But it's the only one we have.

I got called for jury duty just before a several month out of state work project. I explained the situation before I left. They didn’t want to release me because of work. They told me that they could send a deputy to get me if I didn’t show up. I left on my work assignment, never saw a deputy, and never heard from them again.
