bye, bye

While all our mods are great, W2R belongs in mod hall of fame!
+1
After a dozen years here I have learned who to listen carefully to. I always look forward to W2R posts.

Cheers!

Well, I pause. Last spring, when things were hot, I just had to take a break for a few months. Just too much corona.

The funny thing is I took a 1 day pause recently after someone asked if I was drunk even though I was well too sober (thanks mods for deleting that). After a day, I actually came around to thinking the comment was funny, after it was gone.

Ironically, a few years ago I posted while I was actually drunk and everyone loved those posts. I'm not going to try that experiment again!

Now that is interesting to know! If only some others had such a sense of humor.

I appreciate different points of view and having good conversation.

I do as well, but there's a big difference between other points of view, & having people act like total !@#$!@#s. A little less than 3 years ago I started a thread, with a specific question. I wanted to amass approximately 30 pounds of silver. I had already started doing so, buying 1964 Kennedy half dollars on eBay.

I asked fellow forum members if they thought I should continue to do it that way, or buy boxes of American Silver Eagles ? There was helpful replies, but eventually the !@#$!@#s showed up. Basically calling me an idiot, who was calling for hyper inflation, taunting me on days silver went down, etc

But that's what the ignore button is for.
I ended up buying 1400 Kennedy halves on E-bay @ an average cost of $6.81
Right now, they're selling for $12.00 + (actually more, because now buyers have to pay sales tax if they reside in a state that has one)

You know it's odd,
some posters have a certain hill they want to die on. On other topics they can be kind and thoughtful BUT..if a certain topic comes up it's like they go to the dark side.

OTOH there are one or maybe two posters who I scroll by as soon as I see their name.

AAA+++

I've never minded someone disagreeing with me factually - especially when they supply facts. I'm just always surprised when anyone goes from level 1 to 11 on their first reply - typically not on the facts but on opinions. But that's just me, so YMMV.

Three pages already on a bye, bye post. Amazing.

I think the posters who hold back for fear of criticism are probably being sensible. Some people thrive with criticism or blow it off if it seems uncalled for. Others stew over it. If you are one of the later you may just be courting distress by posting an opinion you know will provoke a heated response. Although, maybe the better approach would be to step out gingerly with mildly controversial thoughts. Who knows, after a year or so you might become one of the posters who enjoys the give and take.

Edit: I'm sad to see kitesurfer go. Everytime I see his user name I fondly remember my weekend "zero to hero" kitesurfing bonding trip with my DS in the Outer Banks.

Well I agree, but sometimes you never know what will provoke a heated response. I never thought that a discussion on the number of stairs leading to a front door would trigger some folks. I admit it triggered myself a bit too.

I have since learned to use the "thread unsubscribe," something I haven't done since I joined. It is a good tool to calm the nerves. I find it is usually better and less heavy handed than ignoring users.

I don't understand why ignoring users is heavy handed. (NRN) It's easy to do and they don't know it unless maybe they try to PM you... The only problem I've found with ignoring a user is that if someone uses the "quote feature" then you'll see their post in the other posters quote. In anycase, I may try the "thread unsubscribe" in some cases too. Thanks for the tip.

Here's what I mean. Say you are viewing a post that really irks you from someone, so you ignore. Fine.

But maybe that is just a hot button for that person? I've found that most folks here have good input. We all have bad days or angry days, or whatever. If you ignore, it is a perma-cancellation and you'll miss the other 90% good from them.

"Ignore" is actually a bigger problem in our society. Check it out, 50% of the country is ignoring the other 50%. Companies are cancelled. People are banned. This is not a good trend, so I try not to do it personally on social media.

I'm glad I didn't ignore the person from the post I recently spoke of. I like most of their other input.

But in the end, I do have a few on ignore. Turns out most of them have left or or gone fishing or something. These were folks who simply had snark on Every Single Post. That gets old.

I don't think bye bye should have a comma.

I can understand that and generally agree... I only have two on my ignore list at this point and it took well over 5 years before I did that. (it's like Joe Buck talking about football, just can't take it anymore) So the way I see it, I'm ~okay with ~99.99%

I have not found the need to ignore people or threads, at least not yet. If I find someone's posts annoying it is usually not a universal thing. Most folks seem to have valuable or at least non-objectionable things to say most of the time.

I usually ignore people whose comments I find particularly upsetting and insensitive, as an alternative to not reading the rest of the comments on a post. And I often use the "View post" link to see if they are being antagonistic or making a good point; after one or two of the latter, I'll usually take them off the list until/unless their subsequent comments threaten to drive me away again. I've only done this with about a dozen people over the years, and only a couple have stayed on it, but I think that's because they stopped commenting altogether.

I've found many of those on my ignore list who stopped commenting altogether did so because their status changed to "gone traveling".

EDIT: One almost universal behavior of those who flounce from the forum is they can't resist returning to see what was posted about their departure - as the OP did early this AM.

Oh...... I'm as guilty as the next poster...

There's the official "Youbet Understatement of the Day." Haven't used that in years, but this really called for it!

And I think the first B should have been capitalized.

(Glad there are two of us pondering the important issues here... :D)

Any favorite "bye" scenes from Movie and TV? This is my favorite. Short and to the point:

This one amuses me.
