Dex saying Thanks & Goodbye

Dex, do what you think is right. Your happiness in retirement is more important than any internet bulletin board.

I'm in my 6th year of early-early retirement. In that time, I resigned my long time heavy-duty moderation of one board, and mod duties on another. It stopped being fun. I've changed, the internet has changed, and I have realized my limitations.

There are some people on internet who say things they certainly wouldn't say in person, to the person they are saying it to. Being anonymous gives them a sense of courage. I can't change that.

There are people on internet who surely must be ignored by real people around them, so internet gives them a forum (literally!) to give their beliefs about everything. I can click to another post, but after a while it gets wearing.

There are some good smart people on internet, that one can learn things from. I appreciate them.

There are smart people on internet that over time get caught up with themselves, such that they begin to think, and act, like they now are an expert on everything. I can't change that.

There is totally wrong, idiotic information on internet that is portrayed as truth. I can't stop that, and I have learned it was foolish for me to try. All info on internet should be viewed with suspicion. Let the reader beware, always. Every day.

When I first got on internet many years ago, it was different, at least it seemed to me. Nowadays, everyone is on internet. Raw emotion seems to be pumped out on the slightest whim. In that respect, I feel that the overall class level of internet boards has declined greatly. And I'm not going to be able to change that.

None of these situations are unique to this forum. It's everywhere. So over the years, I spend less and less time on any internet boards.

I'm an old timer here at e-r.org, registered Feb. 1 of 2003. I think I outdate anyone else left around here, except Dory. I date from the days of Ted and JG and others long gone. Look at my post total, I haven't even hit 600 yet in 5+ years!

Many times while working on something I'll think of a good post topic... but I never actually post it. Somewhere between thinking of it, and actually getting on the computer later, I think "aww, why bother. Somebody will probably just give me grief about it one way or another". I don't need that. So I don't post. How's that for negative thinking?

Dex, enjoy your retirement. You've earned. You deserve it. You don't need any internet forum to have a happy retirement. Internet will go on without you or me, or millions of others. Internet is a blessing, and also a curse. We can go on without it, whenever we choose.

Enjoy, friend, enjoy.

Sorry you feel you have to leave. I read over your last posts and don't really see a reason there for your decision. Personally I don't look at the Soap Box forum unless something I was reading got moved there--some people just enjoy arguing--and the other forums seem to me to have pretty genteel postings and the occasional harsh posting that is usually easy to ignore. But damn I'm going to miss your sexy avatar!!!

PS Good post, Telly--

I don't understand why anyone would expect an internet board to be any more pure than real life. Most of us still interact with flesh and blood people, even though they may annoy us a bit at times. I'd rather be annoyed than lonely. Also, it helps at times to remember-"as many as annoy me, so also do I annoy".

I find it really nice to be able to pop in and out, say a few words, read a few words, and be off to something else. And like someone said, there is always the ignore feature. That one is a little harder to deploy in real life.

Life is always changing. My son once got on his Mom for her way of preferring the ways things used to be. He had a point, things are the way they are, and I for one don't spend a lot of effort preferring one way to another. I'll just enjoy what is there to enjoy. So what if on a given day it is mostly jousting. Nothing wrong with that. Look at King Arthur's Round Table! :)

So let’s all lay back, relax, be friendly or be hostile, ultimately it is all humans attempting to interact with one another. And that makes it beautiful.

Ha

Most of the people that I know in real life would not act out unless they were sloppy drunk or had mental illness;) Even some of the banned posters in the past have admitted that they dont act like their posting persona in the "real world"...

There is another comment by a long time poster in this thread about not wanting to post threads because they are concerned about a hostile response....Brewer said something similar in one of theFed's threads....that he is PM'ing folks questions....

"and the next step will be a passive aggressive thread explaining that we wont have you to kick around anymore"

In the interests of maintaining a fair and balanced forum, shouldn't you be offering complimentary public pyschoanalysis to Dex in this situation?

I hope you enjoy your retirement! if the forum was not improving your retirement experience, there is no need to drag yourself down! But I know you'll miss [-]me [/-]us! O0

Dex, I'm sorry to see you go and hope you change your mind. You have been a forum member here for a very long time. Take care.

Don't visit much, don't read much, pm the people you thought were/are worth a damn and the board ain't so bad - those are my rules.

And for all of you hostile mofos, piss off.....

Dude, that's hilarious! My sentiments exactly.

Edit to add: I went for a walk and was thinking about this line. I should add it to the back of my retirement "business" card! The front will have a Yin/Yang zen symbol of course.

One can't take things on Internet forums too seriously. I figured that out back in the BBS days. The wide range of opinions and experiences is interesting, but keep in mind that the poster may be someone with nothing better to do than incite riots.

I agree with Walt.

I have been on some boards with some horrid people before and this group is pretty tame.

Also there is some really sick beyond words people out there. I have read some internet boards where the comments were so awful it stuck with me for a long time. I just couldn't believe anyone thought like that.

Also the advice on staying out of the soap box might be a good idea.

I never took politics as serious as some people do I guess. I have seen people get into screaming arguments over some political thing. I look at it like this. If you think Bush is god great that is your opinion and if you think he is the worst president in history that is fine too.

There will always be a few rotten people on a board of any size but there are so many nice people on here it's worth staying.

The soap box section here is quite tame. It seems to be just some people who would like to rant about politics. I have not read much in the way of agressive name calling and dangerous attacks. Am I missing something? I am sitting on my porch typing on a computer and putting something in digital space. Better not to waste others time posting trivial blabber, but then who dictates taste?

Now THERES a revenue generating opportunity if I ever saw one. Put all the mod deleted porn and snappy user posts into a private forum and charge $5 a month to read it.
