I consider myself to be very fortunate. Early on in my IT career I switched employers. I did not realize prior to the move how good an employer they were and the growth opportunities that they and their successor companies would provide over the next 25 years.

I recently spoke to someone who had a long career with a fortune 500 manufacturing firm that is currently in the the midst of downsizing, shrinking, and whose has been dropped from the index. I could not believe how poorly (comparatively) this employer treated it's middle management teams. Made me realize, even in retirement how fortunate I was to work with a great company and with so many smart, helpful people-above and below me.
