I want to thank everyone for posting their pictures. They all remind me why I am glad I no longer live in Chicago or Maine. They remind me why the brutal (to me) NC summers are worth putting up with - it's so I don't have to see these scenes outside my own windows for months at a time. We get the occasional snows, but they are mercifully small and short-lived.
I am going to bookmark this thread and refer back to it next August, when I think how lovely it would be to live in New England again.

Where did you get a picture of me shoveling my old sidewalk in Maine? (I didn't have a snowblower).
