IE 8

Has anyone upgraded to Internet Explorer 8? I did and found that opening a few of my frequently used webpages would cause it to stop working. After a week of this I went back to IE7. I thought this was the finished browser and not a beta edition.

Is Firefox a better browser? I'm always open to better programs.

I would say Firefox is way better.

That said, I have just installed IE 8 because some of my stuff has to be done through IE. I installed it a while back, then uninstalled because it kept gagging.

Will be testing it out in next few days.

I let my system update IE but I don't normally use it. Like Khan, one or two things have to use IE.

Also like Khan, I use FireFox, for many good reasons.

Yes, I have been running IE8 for a while. No problems of the sort you mention, though. I did have to upgrade Norton to the 2009 version for compatibility. Other than that, smooth as silk so far.

I've been using Firefox exclusively for a couple of years now. Occasionally it freezes up on me, but no other problems. I rarely use IE and don't have IE8 installed.

I use Firefox with MSN Mail and don't have a problem. I have been exclusively checking mail via the Internet rather than downloading for at least six months.

Haven't downloaded IE8 yet, IE7 seems to work fine on the few sites where I have to use it.

Firefox is much better and far more secure. It was even recommended to me by a Citibank CSR the other day for its better security. I've been using it for years though.

How does Firefox compare to Safari? I use Safari for everything expect one on-line delivery grocery store that is iffy to access by Safari. Is Sarari as data mined, secure, etc. compared to Firefox?

I use Firefox more than anything. To my knowledge, Apple hasn't inserted data mining code to secretly send usage information back to them.

I think the 'data mining' comment was with respect to Chrome, not FireFox.

Chrome is a Google product, therefore the 'fear' of a tie in, that Google would use the browser to learn more than with other browsers.

I was about to switch back to IE 7 from Firefox due to Firefox's noticeable sluggishness on my old PC, then someone (here, I think) mentioned the AdBlock Plus add-on for Firefox. No more little dancing people! Or maybe they're twitching convulsively because their ARM rates just went up, I'm not sure. Now I wait for it.

The mass of work relying on browsers is enormous, and developers have pressure to please marketeers to make things clever and, well, flashy. They also often want to play with leading-edge techniques. Glitz will win out over prudence. Always keep the industry reference browser, currently IE7, available and use it when something doesn't seem right. I have a few security-sensitive sites I must use occasionally that take a very conservative and thrifty approach and simply refuse to run on anything but IE7.

The whole browser-wars thing is over-hyped in my opinion (which of course counts for very little ). Over the years I've tried many others, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, various IE derivatives such as Maxon, but I've always come back to vanilla IE as it just plain works and there is very little in the way of tedious and time-sucking add-in, plug-in faffing about. (Disclaimer: I do use the free IE7Pro for it's ad-block features, but that's a singular fix-it add-in)

Provided you are up-to-date with latest Microsoft security patches and take some basic set-up precautions which are widely covered in both the main-stream and 'specialised' sources (ZDNet, Windows Secrets, et al) then IE in all its flavours is fine.

All the hype about other browsers is just religious wars. Browsers are a tool, not a way of life or 'cause celebre'

I run Spybot and adaware scans on a weekly basis I have not noticed a larger number of cookies and entries since I started using Chrome.

I've been using Chrome--IE8 was just slower than molasses and installing and using Chrome was cheaper than throwing the laptop out the window. I cannot for the life of me get the newest version of Mozilla to work--it cannot connect to the Mozilla website after I install it. I liked the previous version.

I'm going to try IE8 again.
It seems IE7 doesn't talk to XP3.

Funny I should log on and there is talk of IE8. Just got out of the car after listening to a computer geek that has a call in show. Lot of complaining about IE8, so the geek says DO NOT install unless you have programs that require IE8. He says IE7 is fine and that you should have this if you are still running IE6. He mentioned that Microsoft labels their downloads as "critical" if it contains security issues. Only these should you download, not the nicey ones like IE8.
