How much cash do you carry ?

Note the recent events in California with the lack of power.... stores could only do cash transactions. Keeping a stash of cash in the wallet or home can be useful during an emergency. I've heard that in some cities the muggers might get nasty if you don't have at least $100 for them to steal from you.

Once a week I pull $200 from a secure cash machine. We pay cash for eating out and misc expenditures except at the grocery store. We use the credit card selectively. Living overseas gave me a sense of caution. (Paranoia is my hobby.)

I always have a $20 and a check tucked in my wallet, but I charge everything if I can. When travelling I will carry some extra cash for tips.

This ^^^ is the reason I keep cash in my wallet (usually $50-$100) to deal with emergency situations that arise, and being able to help remedy the problem.

usually $50-200, more when on vacation for tipping.
Do have a safely hidden cash stash at home for emergencies.

I carry around $50- $100 I remember a few weeks ago at lunch the computers were down I ate some did not.

Even though I use my credit card all the time (for the points) I keep several hundred in my house, $50 in my car, and another $50 or so in my golf bag. Plus $100 - $200 in my pocket.

Why limit my options for no good reason?

Good point. For some of us it is because no matter how much we carry, we spend it in the same amount of time.

I went to the bank and got something like $200 in small bills.
10 - $10
10 - $5
50 - $1

We try to keep small bills in our wallets for tips.

Shuttle guy at the airport -- $1/bag; delivery guys bringing new couch inside -- $10 each; guys loading up our truck at hardware stores -- $5 each (they always seem surprised, but pleased).

It's handy to have cash to tip hairdresser; lemonade stand kids; hotel housekeeping; etc.

I don't have to replenish the small bills very often -- once or twice/year.

We usually pay cash when we eat at local mom/pop restaurants. But that usually takes a twenty ... or three.

I like having cash around. I usually get $3000 from the bank, and keep $500-$1000 in my wallet most of the time.

I've started using my CC more often lately, but still like having money in my pocket.

Back in the day when the neighborhood I lived in was unsafe I always kept $100-$200 in my wallet.

It was money I planned to quickly give to any mugger in lieu of taking my whole wallet and then hurting me.

Surprised I never had to use it !

I use to do the above, but now no more than $100 at any time, due to using CC anytime I can for the rewards.

There is generally $1000-$2000 at home for emergencies, and $50-$100 in my wallet. I hardly spend cash on anything, so the bills in my wallet have been there for awhile.

We tend to pull out our debit card for day-day expenses.

Why do you keep so much money in your wallet? Are you traveling or something?

Yesterday I had to pick up a RX & carried no cash, as always. It was $0.23. Charged. Just a smidge embarrassing, though.

Because he likes it. :D

When I worked, I commiserated with a friend as we both became financially independent about how one could have a million dollars in the investment account, but put a few hundred dollar bills in my hand and I feel rich. Not sure why, but I like having cash in my wallet. Hundred dollar bills, the casino denomination.

You can have fun with cash.

I usually have a few $2 bills in my wallet and $1 coins in my pocket.
Some of the double takes I see, especially with young people, are priceless.

Where I golf, the owner has fun with cash. He gives $2 bill for change and also 50 cent pieces. My grandson (8 yrs old) saw one of the $2 bills and in a very excited tone asked "Is that real?".

I used an old Susie dollar coin at a supermarket a few years ago, and the cashier (an older woman) got fooled by it, thinking it was a quarter. I was a little surprised because she was surely old enough to have known about them back in the late 1970s and early 1980s when they were produced.

Have you ever tried to spend any Eisenhower dollar coins, or just the Susies or the more recent Goldies? Back in my recent working days, some vending machines would dispense them as change but oddly enough wouldn't accept them! Pretty unfair if you ask me.

I have a few $2 bills but haven't desired to spend them.
