Class of 2017

The church voted today to call the guy who will replace me... And the man accepted the position. At the business meeting, a couple of people jokingly were trying to get me to reconsider and stay at the church. The man who was running the meeting just said, "I think we all know that ain't gonna happen!"

I realize that my situation is a lot different than many people on this forum who can't wait to walk away fro Mega-Corp... But Calling the replacement is a major hurdle in allowing me to break away and leave the congregation in good hands.

I only have eight more Sunday's!:)

Today is the first day of retirement. I had my company retirement lunch last Friday, turned in all the company keys etc.
I had originally set October 13 as the date, but circumstances changed it to November 3. 2017. We had been paying extra on the mortgage. in anticipation of being debt free by the end of the year and I asked DW to check on the last bit of balance we owed. She told me, "none" so last w*rk day and first day of completely debt free[
Life is good and now to get on with the next chapter!:D

Congrats to all the October/early November retirees!

It has been a month for me and like GalaxyBoy I keep gleefully reminding myself that I don't have to go to work tomorrow. Currently I'm visiting friends in Oregon and it is so nice to be on vacation and not have to dread going back to work once I get back home. Makes the vacation a little more relaxing.

Looks like it's official. I'll be part of this Class of 2017

I know I'm new here and haven't been around to do a lot of discussions with y'all but, December 1st is my last day with my employer. I herniated my L3-L4 disc 12/16/2016 and have been on furlough leave since then. My condition has not improved enough to return to my job so rather than putting it off any longer I'm going officially resign on the above date. I believe I have thought this out thoroughly and can see no benefit for me by delaying any longer. Now is the time of open season for health care and I need to decide what is my best option. ACA, Cobra or just purchase on the market, I need to evaluate all choices and determine what's best for my wife and I. I'm also going to make a sizable withdrawal from my retirement savings to fund my chosen lifestyle during retirement so I want to split this up between different years for tax purposes. Glad I found this site.

I successfully graduated with the class of 2017, and had my first non-work week. Every morning, I do a happy dance in the kitchen while I make my coffee, so glad and thankful to not have to go to work that day. Since I can't seem to grasp "you never again have to commute to work", I am spinning it to my brain that I am on vacation this week and next week.

My anxiety levels have dropped markedly, and I am calmer, with a baseline of giddy happy. Retirement is going to agree with me, and do wonders for my mental and physical health.

Hang in there, those of you still plodding along. For those on the fence, GET OUT NOW!!! It is marvelous.

For a minute, I thought I wrote the above post! I still do my "happy dance" to the coffee machine every morning. Then I sit back and watch the traffic reports on the morning news and smile. Anxiety is way down and the feeling of freedom is still overwhelming.

Class of 2017 :)

Congratulations and welcome to the Class of 2017!

Joining the Class of 2017!

Just wanted to let you all know I resigned a month ago (Oct 11) and can really join this class! Feel a lot lighter and healthier than before.

Being able to read about all the considerations around FIRE on these forums and all your advice has helped me choose my path. Thanks!

Congratulations on your retirement! Enjoy your freedom!

I ended up going back part-time as a consultant. Am I kicked out of class?

I retired beginning of April. I had worked as the IT manager for 16 years. Trained my replacement for 6 months before I left. In August I got a phone call. The replacement had been arrested (taken out of the office in handcuffs) for misdeeds at his past employer.

I went in to help change all the passwords, etc. and have been helping out ever since. It is only about 10-15 hours a week. That should end next month or early January.

I didn't miss work one little bit when I retired. But being back in small doses hasn't been bad either. I still get to do (or not do!!!) all the things I wanted to. And it means I haven't had to take anything out of my retirement funds this year.

Can I reapply for class of 2018? Or just put an asterisk next to my name.

Yikes. Good for you in going back.

I'm also guilty of coming back for a short 1099 stint; helping out on an appeal on a case that I was intimately involved with. Luckily the deadlines for filing coincided with our 2 months at home between trips.... Wouldn't have done it for the money, although it'll provide us with maybe a month's spending. But, would have been a tough spot for others to handle alone and DW agreed that I should do it....

Still claiming 2017 status though, as I'm coming in late, leaving early, and not working weekends or holidays!

I made it!

Today was my last day of w*rk!!!!
It was wonderful and started kinda of serene after an exciting last week, I brought treats the last 5 w*rk days, kinda like the 12 days of xmas....
One of my bosses bought pizza today for a retirement lunch for everybody on my floor and a couple of cakes so no-one went hungry (this was at my request vs taking me out to lunch). Lots of great reminiscing and I felt very appreciated!
What a great sendoff, I'm one of the first to retire in our department but there will be several to follow over the next 10 years.

I want to Congratulate all of my 2017 graduates that have gone before me. You have helped me keep the faith and eventually make it!

And Congratulations to the remainder of the 2017 graduates to be, hang in there, its almost your day. It is all "that" and so much more!

Looking forward to what tomorrow will bring....

Class of 2017 Graduate as of November 24th.

Final official employment day was Nov 24th, exit interview Nov 27th. Still sinking in that every day is Saturday. The concept is still new to me but I'm pretty sure I'll adjust. Feels good to have this freedom. Can't wait to hit the road in spring, lots to explore out there in America.

Joined the class of 2017 on 11/30. Still trying to convince my self it's really true. The feeling is incredible.

My official date now is June 30th 2018. I took Mega Corp Transition to Retirement offer, which ends 06-30-2018 (work part time with full benefits until that day).

Looks like I am dropping out of the class of 2017, as it seems Megacorp will not be having a retirement transition program nor a layoff (for which I volunteered) this year. No worries, I just consider myself unofficially "retired in place" :) . 1Q2018 no looks like my likely retirement target. Congrats to those in the class of 2017!

Congratulations MrBig1 and Farmer Vic, welcome to the 2017 graduation party!

Neihn, while you will miss the class of 2017, the part-time wind-down is a nice thing. I did that myself, and it was a great way to phase out and have the extra time off before having every day off.

Congratulations to all the recent retirees! I cleaned up the list adding new retirees and such. Added an early January 2018 entry for those who want to take advantage of the New Year's holidays.

Add me to the "Class of 2017" list. Last day was 11/24. Still have not sunk in yet and feels like just finishing up a week of vacation. I figure that it will start to become more real after the first of the year.

However, it was nice last Sunday to realize that I do not have to get ready for work on Monday. I am sure that this evening, I will feel the same way!! :)

Congrats to all the 2017 retirees!

Well, I guess i have to say 2017 is not my year. I am FI. Just need to get the RE part down. I was awaiting an "exit" with sale of the company, but that will not happen this year.

On to 2018!

Needed to remove myself from Dec. 2017. Now have official 2018 date of 4/30. Moved to that class.
