Class of 2021

Just notified that I'm now on the 2021 list (March)! I won't be 50 for three more weeks so I just made my pension qualification along with 64 weeks of severance pay. 32 years starting as a co-op. So many questions!!

Added myself. Finally decided OMY was going to drive me crazy. I wonder if ClearSky and I work at the same place with a bonus payout on 3/5?!? [emoji848]🤫 90 days tomorrow!! This will be fun to watch these posts throughout 2021.

I will take upon myself to take Azdre's recent info, but to also add in Gamboolman, and also update Aramis according to his/her most recent musings. Feel free to correct, Aramis. I am also demoting myself by a month. (I am planning to delay a month to get one more month of health care!)

It’s almost 2021! It must be exciting for all of you who are about to retire. Good luck to everyone. I will be following along as motivation to keep working towards my eventual finish line. :greetings10:

Update: Current target for retirement is April 1st, 2021.

Up the line you go!

Anyone else in the class of 2021 getting cold feet? March 1 (or maybe even Feb 1 as it seems doable) is approaching rapidly for me.

I thought 2020 was going to be my OMY, but as 2021 approaches, I’m worrying about things like COVID vaccine availability and cost and wondering if a few extra months of solid j*b income would be beneficial to top off the tank.

On the other hand, all the calculators including Firecalc say that I should be fine. When I think of the dread of continuing to work with certain passive aggressive co-w*rkers and just not liking a large percentage of my job duties, those OMY thoughts fade away.

Just wondering if anyone else is having these back and forth thoughts.

I envy the sense of nervousness that the imminence of being two or three months out will surely bring. September 2021 still feels like a long time away...

I did have some back-and-forth thoughts, but then at some point I started ineluctably, inexorably sliding towards the description I have quoted above.

Am I nervous about a HUGE life change? Yes! I wake up at night every so often running my income vs anticipated expenses in my head. Not the best way to wake up. I know we are 100% on FireCalc and now with (theoretical) money to spare but pulling the plug on w*rk still makes me nervous.

Decided I was going to make a list of everything I do not like about w*rking and another list of everything I do not have the time to do now. Looking at those lists should, maybe, fix the thought of OMY or OMM (month).

Hi, I'm FLSunFIRE after OMYing my way from the Class of 2020 to 2021 I am currently aiming for the summer if I can hang on.. really burned out and unmotivated and taking things a day at a time.

I am uneasy and I don't know how much is due to the psychology of making a major life change/fear of leaping and how much is "real." A lot of it is just 2020 and my lack of optimism in the market (valuation vs earnings which are hard to predict in the current environment). Sure, the value of my portfolio looks great but it was a quick run up and it can go down quickly too! The chaos of 2020 will have some lasting effects (not that they'll be all bad but we are experiencing a series of events (wackier than normal politics and a pandemic) that will leave the world different. In projecting my cash flow in FIRE (the obsessive spreadsheet playing), I use a 30% drop the day I quit and average returns of 5.5% going forward with 3% inflation. That seems fairly conservative and is doable but leaves less room to flex. Backtesting (FIREcalc), I am much more likely to have too much than not enough but my mind still wonders if this is the new "worst time to FIRE."

 Don't feel too sorry for me! I am in a great position (of course, being human I want it to be better), my troubles are all in my head. Can't really whine about having enough assets to reasonably never have to work again but still worrying about the unknown.

I ask myself every day whether I should OMY. Sure has been nice this year being FI. We have been using my excess income to take care of some high dollar stuff before we retire (moved, new cars, getting projects done, ebikes, a telescope). I ask myself "Wouldn't it be nice to keep on spending like crazy people?" Then I look at the numbers again and we have $40k a year set aside for blow that dough stuff and I feel ok again. Then I think OMY wouldn't be so bad. And so it goes, probably until 31 Mar.

I'm adding myself to the list! Shooting for October 31, 2021, at the age of 52:

Today I announced to management and my team that I am retiring next year. Did not provide an exact date because I am waiting for a retirement estimate from HR for my proposed date. Management wants me to stay longer, part time, to wrap up some near term work. I said I would listen to their proposal but I had no personal reasons to continue to work (in other words I don't need the $). Mr. Goingtotravel also announced his retirement date to his management last week. DH is retiring at the end of January.

That's great! What a nice feeling to have them both lined up so neatly for 2021!

My update is that I was asked to stay 3 more months to finish a project, so my new end date is now June-ish. 3 more months of salary will pay for a home renovation project I had been thinking about, so it was a no brainer to say yes :)

Hi Everyone.
I will be joining the 2021 club.
I am trying to decide if I will retire March 2021 or September 2021.
I will get a nice sized pension after 35 years. The difference between March and September is ~$200/month.
Is this worth it?

Can't answer that, but I can reframe it. This is equivalent to about $60k difference (i.e., @4% withdrawal from a hypothetical stash). Is that a lot or a little for you for 6 mos. work?

And, of course, do you need it more or less than the 6 mos.?

I actually knew no one could answer that for me but appreciate hearing others opinions. I never thought of it being the equivalent of $60,000 to draw from.
That is something to ponder.
I’m struggling with the decision to pull that final lever on my career but I am burned out.
I will be 62 1/2 in March/63 in September.
I’m usually a very decisive person so this indecision is really weighing on me.

And if you wait another 6 months there may be another $60,000 to draw from!

There's always more money, there's never more time. That beautiful, horrible dance.
