Class of 2021

And if you wait another 6 months there may be another $60,000 to draw from!

There's always more money, there's never more time. That beautiful, horrible dance.

Yeah, how was it phrased when I read it somewhere on this forum? Something like:

"When you retire, by definition, you are leaving some money on the table. But when you keep working instead, by definition, you are leaving some life (time?) on the table."

So, I thought about the value-time or money and I decided to figure out the percentage for each.
If I live to 90 (my mom is 90 so possible) that’s 27.5 more years or 330 months. 6 months of the rest of my life would be.01818182.
$200 extra for working an additional 6 months is .01818182 of my income!
The exact same percentage.
Which is eerie! So, I’m right back where I started, 6 months of more retirement or $200 more per month income.

That is eerie. Maybe you should post that in the paranormal thread! :D

"Doo Doo Doo-doo..."
"Doo Doo Doo-doo..."

(spoken as the The Twilight Zone theme)

I know, right!
I ran the numbers a few times just to be sure.
If it wasn’t for Covid I’d take a trip to Las Vegas.
And I’m right back where I started with my retirement date decision.
Retire in March or wait 6 months for an additional $200/ month.
The struggle is real.

Please put me on the list. 2/19/2021. :)

Your wish is my, uhhh, mild suggestion! Here ya go!

Well, another small update. I was, in fact, selected for our voluntary RIF program. I can get something like 6 mos. in salary.

I am DEFINITELY taking it. So it looks like my date is now set in stone as 7/1/2021.

It feels very good and very odd and somewhat anticlimactic at the same time.
:clap::crazy::wiseone::)

Anyone else in the class of 2021 getting cold feet? March 1 (or maybe even Feb 1 as it seems doable) is approaching rapidly for me.

I thought 2020 was going to be my OMY, but as 2021 approaches, I’m worrying about things like COVID vaccine availability and cost and wondering if a few extra months of solid j*b income would be beneficial to top off the tank.

On the other hand, all the calculators including Firecalc say that I should be fine. When I think of the dread of continuing to work with certain passive aggressive co-w*rkers and just not liking a large percentage of my job duties, those OMY thoughts fade away.

Just wondering if anyone else is having these back and forth thoughts.

Yes! I've done that for the last year. Finally a month ago I made up my mind for sure and the peace I feel is just amazing. I wasn't happy in my current role so I applied for a role that I'd be very good at, would be a new challenge, something I would have LOVED 5 years ago, etc. When it looked like I was in the top 2 candidates it made me realize that I just don't want to do this stuff anymore. That clinched it for me. Bonus payout to bye bye!

I accepted our company early retirement incentive and am joining the class of 2021. My final day will be mid-February. My DW and I had been planning for awhile to retire in 2022 or 2023. This fell into my lap and was too good to pass up. We are now winding down the clock and ready for me to stop being available 24/7, getting calls on vacation and generally never really have any time away without an interruption. I love what I do and the people I work with, but I’m ready to go.

Loving to join you all. I was originally planning to retire in 2020, but COVID implications frightened me and so I pressed on. Nearly a year later, the picture is a little clearer and frankly? I can't take any more. lol.
A thirty year plus career...last ten as a fed...in some ways it's hard to walk away from, in other ways, I embrace the future....peace, happiness and self determination to us all! oh I am thinking my date will be March 12. Perhaps a bit sooner...I have to submit my pension application next week. I gave notice yesterday.

Ok I'm in for 2021! Having a hell of a time trying to decide WHEN but I'm out of contract September 1st. I really don't know if I can make it that long but with covid etc it just doesn't seem like it'll make much of a difference to jump any earlier. In the meantime I'll pump up my travel pot for when the world is 'normal' again!

I did have some back-and-forth thoughts, but then at some point I started ineluctably, inexorably sliding towards the description I have quoted above.

Yes I'm definitely having these kinds of thoughts. I work in a field I enjoy and part of me feels it's stupid to walk away from a good job!

Friends & family keep telling me to hang onto the paycheck, and I definitely hear their encouragement. But not one of them is FI. Hard to really make the leap into the new paradigm but let's keep working on it!

Okay, gang: Countdown starts in 3 days!

I will be retiring at the end of January on my 58th birthday. I joined this class way back in 2014. Plan to take the motorhome to Florida for February and March, then embark on a multi-month Fantasy RV Tour this summer to Alaska. Hoping this pandemic gets conquered because we have so many fun things planned. My best to everyone.

Just changed my 401k withholding so it maxes out by 31 Mar. The end is near.

I was originally part of of the class of 2020, but company stock price along with some pretty lucrative RSUs pushed my date to October 1, 2021 (staying another year means ~ $1,500/month more - I look at it as free healthcare premiums until I turn 65). My "problem" is the old OMY syndrome, so I am practicing by not looking at RSUs beyond that date.

Looking forward to joining those who have made the leap.

Good luck to the Class of 2021! Your time has almost arrived. I’ll be following along. It must be exciting to be this close to retirement. :greetings10:

Hello Class -- sadly, i have not posted since early 2020-- like many, the 2020 pandemic through me for a loop (we both kept working, but have elderly parents in other states so it's been pretty stressful). I am still on the fence about retiring in 2021. If I do, I am moving my date from 4/2021 to 10/2021. We are relocating this month to a MUCH warmer climate. Once we are settled, we'll reassess. For now, sticking to our class.
