What did you do today? - 2021 version

Wow! The young wife and I have been wanting to take a trip to New Orleans and wondering when would be the best time of year so that the heat will be bearable. But if it is 79 deg. in January, I don't know when that ever would be.

Well, it's not consistent. We were having highs in the 40's and 50's earlier in January. Then we get 2-3 days of warmer weather, and then it gets cold again. We haven't had a hard freeze yet this winter, but it did get down to 32 one night.

The best weather in New Orleans is usually in October.

Played my new guitar for a while, and practiced bass (main instrument).

The new basement bedroom is almost done. I did touchup paint and finished the suspended ceiling. It has the same ceiling as the rec room but since I added 2 walls I had to rework the ceiling tiles and grid pieces to fit. GF painted the door, I'll install it tomorrow along with the hardware.

I put gutters on the she shed, hung 2 saws in the tool shed, and moved the workbench on wheels in. Used the work bench on wheels and the table saw and the miter saw to install the gutters.

Yesterday took nearly a mile walk on our very frozen lake. 21 degrees and 20mph wind. Our younger dog who came with me was not amused.

We have an appointment tomorrow for our first shot, and I have read a number of places that you should avoid alcohol for a few days after getting it.

So DW and I just enjoyed a nice Irish Coffee as our last indulgence prior to vaccination.

All this talk about vaccination reminded me of when I was a kid and we got smallpox vaccinations. As I recall, they put a tiny drop on your upper arm, then poked or scratched it to break the skin. As it progressed in that very limited area, it eventually caused a small permanent scar to form. I looked at my arm in that spot last night and I believe I can still see it -- a small pale area that stands out enough to be visible. AFAIK it was pretty much the same method that was used in the 19th century, so we have come a long way.

Chopped and drug out a tree limb blown down by last light's storm. Filled up (3) ninety gallon toters with the debris.

Smoked an eggplant this afternoon, which the young wife then turned into baba ghanoush. She also made lamb kofte, tzatziki, tabbouleh and pita bread. All of which we just enjoyed for dinner, with a bottle of Agiorgitiko wine.

Woke up to fresh snow, who would have guessed. Another 4" or so and the snowplow came by pushing a big wall across the driveway. Since DW had a 9am Dr appointment it was time to clear it out.

DW has complained of pain in her arm ever since a blood test 6 weeks ago. Somehow she has tendinitis since then. Doc is having her take nsaids and told her to stop using it until she can get into a specialist. DW didn't want to listen to me when I told her to stop using it now I've won. I won doing all the stuff she did but I have had tendinitis and it stinks. Hopefully taking most of her actions away can help.

Tonight it's going to guess what? More freaking snow. Maybe 5"-8" through tomorrow. It's good we need it. I guess the same storm has already dropped over 50" up at the pass. Rest of the week is kind of mixed and the following week is going to snow [emoji300] too.

Got a pedicure today. First time ever. Being a “manly man”, at least in my mind, it was something the ladies did. However, getting old, looking at my feet and I just needed to do something. So, asked my daughter to take me to a place and we got pedies. Somehow it felt less intimidating with company. Anyway, feet are looking, and feeling, a lot better. Might have to plan a few trips a year going forward.

Just an FYI, I did not get my nails painted but DD did. We were both happy as we left. Not a bad day.

Jerry1, that sounds like a wonderful day! What I wouldnt give to have one more day to hang out with my own dad! I miss him so much. Pedicures are wonderful! Glad you guys had a great time!

We refinanced our mortgage and signed the closing docs today. We have little kids but they were so patient while we signed everything, it took about an hour which is a year in toddler time.

We got some snow too. I think it may have been as much as 1/4 inch but probably less. Forecast is for clear and sunny but cold for the rest of the week so we'll stay in hibernation mode.

WV did roll out a new vaccination pre-registration program so we got DW signed up for that. I'm already registered via the County site (they'll all be rolled together) but she's just under 65 so it'll be a while before she's eligible for a shot.

Hiked yesterday with about 20 bald eagles. Today with a herd of bison. Hiking in the midwest is best in winter - no crowds, ticks, poison ivy or heat/dehydration issues.

Sounds wonderful. I’m not a hiker, but I hear you on the benefits of winter. I used to BBQ a lot and winter was always sweet. Usually nice and quiet, clear fresh air, no bugs . . . I saw my best shooting star one winter evening while out checking on the smoker. Not 20 bald eagles, but memorable.

Got up to fresh fluffy snow! Another 5" last night maybe, it's getting hard to tell. It's been snowing all last night and today another4" has fallen. Ran the snowblower twice and took a walk around the neighborhood. It was very quiet for most of the walk until the snow stopped for a bit, then snowblowing started. County plowed this morning they're not going to be back till tomorrow. I got concerned about the snow behind our bedroom door and made a walkway to get away from the house in case of emergency. Two winters ago I didn't take care of it and eventually paid someone to dig out a much smaller area.

We chatted with a fellow former-Missourian while we were walking, we are both staying off the roads. It's getting difficult to find the road as everything is white and you can't tell where the ditch isn't. A wheel off the road is a vehicle in the ditch doesn't matter what tires/chains or 4wd.

Ha! I've only seen eagles hiking across frozen lakes. The bison hike everywhere, usually with their snoots in the grass.

Got to try my new cross-country ski boots up at Snoqualmie pass. The nordic area is closed during the week, but it's ok to go up and use the trails anyway. There were 20 or so other cars in the lot, folks were up skating the trails or climbing the ski hill with AT gear and skiing down. My new boots, Rossi BC X5s, have more support than the all-leather ones I used before, and it was much easier to control the skis going downhill. I still miss the AT gear on the downhills though, and might pick up some newer AT skis to use with my old randonee boots.

Today, I gave away money. Until 2017, I had made all our charitable contributions in December. However, after the tax change that year, we use the standard deduction. So I shifted to January, in the hopes that someday we'll go back to the prior system and I'll double up contributions that first year back (Yes, I'm playing the long game).

One of our sons sent me a canvas of Lake Tahoe for Christmas (He lives in Reno). I put it next to another picture, and decided I wanted to frame it even though it was on a stretcher.
I ordered the frame and got a notice that it was delivered; NOT! After messing around with FedEx and their website, I waited for them to tell me where it was. Well, about a few hours later, the doorbell rings, and one of my neighbors has the frame. It turns out he is in Unit 68 and I am in 63. The numbering here is strange, and the poor guy carried all the way down to our home. I looked at our map, and he was at the very East end, and I am almost at the West end. I then called him and thanked him profusely for his effort.
I had to pull all the staples out of the stretcher and trim the back of the canvas, but it is now mounted next to a picture one of our other sons gave me.
All's well that ends well.

6" of partly cloudy fell here in the past 24-hrs. enjoyed watching our 3-man snow clearing crew clear the driveways while i was working on getting the new PC up and running. offered the crew some hot chocolate but they declined...lots of other customers to clear.
