Would you buy SpaceX shares?

What about shares of SPCE ?
Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic just went IPO October 28th.

I predict Starlink internet is going to be bigger than big and Musk will do it fast. SpaceX just started in 2002 and now has 6000 people and is landing rockets side by side routinely and reusing them 4 times or more.

SpaceX market cap right now I believe is estimated to be around $40B? After Starlink gets 5,000 or more Satellites up and everyone is getting 100Mbit internet even while on a hike in a canyon in Utah, their market cap is going to be adding another digit.

If it is as good as advertised, it will obliterate cell carriers and cable companies, assuming the signal can be picked up by a phone inside a building, which may be a major sticking point. If they figure out a way to be able to reliably beam down internet that can be picked up virtually anywhere, there will be no reason to have land based internet or a cell phone bill. As long as your phone has internet, there are apps that can be used to call and text.

However, I've used satellite messengers and phones quite a bit, and it's finicky getting a signal in an open field. Throw in tree cover or go inside a building and it's virtually impossible. I'm assuming Musk has thought of this and figured something out, because, well, because he's Elon Musk.

I always wondered how Space X could pull off what they've accomplished in the relatively short time they've been around.

Obviously the U.S. government has picked up the cost of much of their developments. And their operations are packed full of ex-NASA engineers and scientists.

It sounds as if the upcoming moon landing project has about 5 major contractors working together--including Space X.

Note: We moved to Huntsville recently, and the public schools here are packed with future rocket scientists--like their fathers. This is the rocket city.

Another big advantage that Starlink offers is that if you live in a totalitarian regime and they try to block the internet you will be still able to get the internet from Starlink. I thought of this as I heard Iran and China are blocking the internet.
Even with a major earthquake or Hurricane in America you will be able to access the internet as long you have a charge in your phone.

We just happened to be there for this launch...very cool. I was staying at a Residence Inn about 10 miles south of the launch site. There was a small group in the parking lot with us waiting for the launch and I watched simultaneously streaming video. What messed me up was that the streaming video had a 10 second lag so it took off and we didn't notice it until it was going up into the clouds! Then the rumble and the sound hit us. Awesome! Would love to see it close up in the viewing stands some day.

I don’t see how they can make money except perhaps via gov. contracts

They have significantly lowered the price of orbital launch, and yes, a lot of the money comes from gov contracts. Exactly like Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, Boeing, Raytheon, etc make most of their money as well.

The Starlink constellation will be the real money maker though.

In late 2014, stock was around $70/share. Now at $214. It plays a large part in my E-R plans. Every engineer/manager of the company who joined pre-2010 could retire now if they wanted. Stock was in single digits then.

Not really, NASA/gov types don't last long around SpaceX culture. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule, but in general, mostly under 30 years old from top schools.

A long time ago (Iretired in March 08) I escorted the NASA Deputy Administrator on a visit to Musk and his Hawthorne CA plant. (I'm not that important, more the guy in the back of the room serving coffee :) ) But I loved, loved , loved the plant. It just felt right, more like a CALTECH project than a Gereral Morots or even Boeing production. I felt if I were a younger person I would have to consider working there. Just OK pay and slave labs hours but seriously great projects. I got to meet Musk and exchanged emails with him. Have no idea if Space X is a good investment but it does seriously good work creatively. If quality is your guiding investment light then look into this operation.

I recently bought $10k of Virgin Galactic. To me it’s a funny money long shot bet on space with no expectation of reward but a little bit of hope/wishful thinking.

I only bought 100 shares of SPCE. I dropped half of it today after a 325% run up over the last couple of months. I’ll buy it back in a dip, but will let the rest run.

RenoJay, are you still holding?

Watch the launch of the first Falcon Heavy. Even their narrator comments about all the noise coming from the cheering SpaceX employees. Assuming they pull off a successful manned launch in the next few months, I imagine the cheering will be even louder.

While I would love to hold a few shares of SpaceX stock just for bragging rights, I would not want the company to 'go public'. I think it would be the death of it. In 10 years it would be another Mega Corp aerospace company, collecting even more big bucks and producing less.
