Would you buy SpaceX shares?

The above post reminds me of another much-talked about project in the heyday of the Internet: Teledesic. Craig McCaw was the main trust behind it, but Bill Gates was also an investor. A search on Teledesic found me a recent article claiming Google is now thinking about a similar system.

Teslsa is also selling drive train products to Mercedes, IIRC. :) And Tesla is now California's biggest car making company, nwt that Toyota is headed to Texas. ;)

I think Tesla has the formula right. Rather than trying to compete with small, cheaper, and very fuel efficient cars, they are competing with pricey cars. For now, that may be the best use for electric automobiles.

I believe a retired GM executive has said that the first electric vehicles should have been trucks and big guzzlers like the Suburban. Electric versions would get the biggest savings per mile compared to gasoline engines and thus make the most economic sense according to him.

Oh! This is about SpaceX. Well, I would feel better about SpaceX as a company than Tesla since SpaceX has less competition and seems to be doing everything right at the moment. Take a look at what their manned spacecraft will be like - very impressive if they can pull it off.

Maybe I'll wait until one of their rockets explodes and then buy a few shares.:(

At the right price I'd buy a few.

On the other hand, I might just wait until they have their first accident (eventually it'll happen - hopefully not on a man-rated systems for along long time). That would be a great opportunity to pick up shares at a bargain. Assuming they do go pubic any time soon.

Nope. I don't invest in companies because they are inovative and cool. I invest in them because I am confident in their sustained earning power.

I would not have that confidence in SpaceX or Telsa.

They are exciting companies, and I expect them to do great things for their customers. I have no idea how their shareholders will fare, though.

Spacex has eyeballed a nice chunk of land south of here close to the Gulf (Boca Chica) and the state of TX has OKd a nice chunk of taxpayers cash to make a new launch complex happen. Elon Musk is a dynamic guy that seems to make stuff happen.

I know this is an old thread, but since I started it, I feel I can bring it back to life for a time.

I still would buy SpaceX shares. Now more than ever. Go public already!

Yes, I know you can sort of kind of buy them by owning Google and you can sort of own Google by buying a index fund, but where is the fun in that?

I really hope we get to see a launch. We are going to be in Cocoa Beach for the next month or so.

I recently bought $10k of Virgin Galactic. To me it’s a funny money long shot bet on space with no expectation of reward but a little bit of hope/wishful thinking.

How can you say Tesla isn't a great company. It made one good, and one great product, despite tremendous obstacles. Even if Tesla disappear tomorrow and a few years from now everyone decides that electric cars are silly fade, I think Tesla will have still have been a company that had a significant impact on a huge and important industry.

The Tesla UI for the touchscreen is going to be widely copied in the same way that the Mac, and the iPhone were.

Secondly, wireless software patching of car is going to the standard in the future, I bet Tesla advanced the adaptation of this technology by many years.

Practically every week there is another massive recall from an automaker. Perhaps 1/2 of these recalls could be fixed with software (e.g. anything to do with engine controls). The Tesla response to running over objects that caused fires was a software updated that raised the car.. These car patches will save billions and probably more than a few lives.

A great company and a great concept/significant impact are two very different things, financially speaking. A great company is profitable and sticks around and continues to grow. You can have the best idea most innovative idea in the world, but if it ends in bankruptcy, you have not created a great company.

EDIT: I didn't realize how old this thread was

I would absolutely invest in them but I only with a small amount of my portfolio. Maybe 2-3%

Crap crap crap! Nov 11 is today not Tuesday! I have not even had coffee yet, just got up....we gotta scramble now, but thanks for the heads up! Going to try playalinda beach national park which is 5 miles away....later!

 Yep shoulda been “Monday Nov 11” in my post. Sorry bout that, hard to keep track of weekdays when ER’d

Hope you made it!

Elon is the single most important person alive today.
When I was able to witness two of their rocket stages land simultaneously back on earth for re-use, I knew the future of space travel had arrived. It was nothing short of amazing to see these things land so gracefully. I think this technology will introduce ICBM travel, reducing travel times around the world greatly. Imagine NY to London in under 30 minutes. Ballistic Missile travel within the US would be nearly as impressive with coast-to-coast travel in roughly 15 minutes or so.

Private enterprise will find plenty of uses for commercial space travel once it's taken hold. I would gladly invest in a few shares if it were made available.

Absolutely buy Musk anything ...
From William Bernstein:
“Do you think that by choosing a portfolio of only a few stocks that you hope will score big, you are maximizing your chances of becoming wealthy?

“Indeed you are, but you are also maximizing the chances of a retirement of cat food cuisine”

Buy SpaceX? Of course. At least a few shares just to be part of an exciting adventure. Assuming Gwynne Shotwell stays as on 2nd in command, I might even make some money on the deal. There's a real synergy between Musk and Shotwell where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

Well we made it to see the launch! It happens so fast! Neat how you can't hear the roar of the rocket for a good 25 seconds after it launches. I had a good view with binoculars and my wife took a shot with the phone camera just after liftoff.

We talked to a friend just now who works at SpaceX and he says they were holding their breath until the satellites deployed (they did).

I might be persuaded to buy a small stake. Me. Musk seems to know how to make money off the US tax payer.

I predict Starlink internet is going to be bigger than big and Musk will do it fast. SpaceX just started in 2002 and now has 6000 people and is landing rockets side by side routinely and reusing them 4 times or more.

SpaceX market cap right now I believe is estimated to be around $40B? After Starlink gets 5,000 or more Satellites up and everyone is getting 100Mbit internet even while on a hike in a canyon in Utah, their market cap is going to be adding another digit.

+1

Boeing, ULA, Arianespace and Comcast, ATT, and Verizon duopolies will be threatened by a fully operational Starlink. Musk has completely destroyed the myth that space launches have to cost 0.5B USD. Going to go in big with an IPO if it comes to that.

I plan on buying $50,000 on IPO and then another $50,000 a year later, unless it has gone up 400% or something.

Not as well as the Boeing folks. They got over a billion dollars more for the same type of product. And now this gem:

https://arstechnica.com/science/201...boeing-seat-prices-are-60-higher-than-spacex/

“ However, for the first time the government has published a per-seat price: $90 million for Starliner and $55 million for Dragon. “

And this.....

“We found that NASA agreed to pay an additional $287.2 million above Boeing’s fixed prices to mitigate a perceived 18-month gap in ISS flights anticipated in 2019 and to ensure the contractor continued as a second commercial crew provider, without offering similar opportunities to SpaceX," the report states.”

Maybe we should buy Boeing?
