Gary Larson, creator of "The Far Side" comic strip, recently created an official website. He is currently posting a few of the classic strips every day and promises to add some new ones on a periodic basis.

My favorite comic of all time. I happened to be in Seattle to attend a Seahawk game many years ago. We all "partook" in smoking some herb. We were in Pikes Market at a small bookstore. I happened on a new obscure cartoonist by the name of Gary Larson. I sat for what might have been 30 minutes but it seemed like hours. Each comic funnier than the last. My friends had to drag me out. Shortly after they started printing in the local paper. I have a three book hard bound collection series at home. Thanks for letting me know about the link

At least a dozen paperbacks here. Between him and Bill Watterson (Calvin & Hobbes) it was a great era for cartoons.

When I was in college in the early 80's, he gave a talk at our school. (It was jam-packed!)

He showed a number of strips that did not get past the censors. I can only remember one where there was a large python whose head and tail were sticking out in opposite directions from between the bars of a baby crib, but a baby-sized bulge in the middle was preventing the python from slithering away.

Loved the Far Side. I have a book called the Prehistory of the Far Side which is an enjoyable read for any fans. It was made for the tenth anniversary and had some history, comics that couldn't be printed (my personal favorites) and comics that were printed and got hate mail which is shown beside the comic. Funny stuff.

Gary is my ER hero! Seriously, he ER'd at like 45 and stuck to it. I'm pretty sure his ER and announcement was the seed that put the idea in my head. He's not coming out of retirement (he's living up to his promise), but rather protecting his intellectual assets with the site. Good for him. OK, maybe he'll do a few now and then. We can discuss elsewhere as we have in the past if this is a breach of retirement.

I consumed and love every one of his cartoons and compilation books. Does anyone even remember the 1-off TV special animation? It was, uh, appropriately weird.

Go to this site and look at the sketchbooks. Most of these were not in that book (and may even be doodles after retirement). The Christmas tree one with the guy hooked up to the IV is evil and thoroughly delightful! No way that would have passed newspaper censors, but it is perfect for today.

On one of our early dates the wife and I sat in a Denny's restaurant and laughed until we cried going through one of his books. Glad to see his work officially online!

Back in my working days in the 1980s and 1990s, we had a lot of Far Side fans at my office. Someone always had a newspaper so we could see the latest one. Back then, I was in the annual Christmas grab bag where we could write our requests on the slips with our names. I often put Far Side on it, and I got several books (still have them) and page-a-day calendars where I saved some of my favorites.

The ones who go back to work after they've won the lottery — those people are crazy. Gary Larson, who abruptly quit producing the Far Side cartoon nearly nine years ago, has no intention of ever picking up a drawing pencil again. This is the first time in months he has seen his downtown Seattle office, which his business-manager wife and assistant use to filter the paperwork needed to pump out Far Side greeting cards.
