Siesta Key Longboat Key tide question

We are hoping to return to Anna Maria, Longboat for our annual trip in early March '19. But we have heard a lot about the "Red Tide". Should we reconsider our trip? We don't swim in the gulf.

Wouldn't stop me. Might be gone by then ... it can come and go very fast. It's not so much a swimming hazard but eating shallow water local shellfish might be avoided. We had it on our coast about 10 yrs back ... gives you a very shallow cough when at the beach, nothing away from beach.

Some friends of mine went to Panama City Beach last week and posted pictures of thousands of dead fish along the beachfront - yuck! They said the smell was horrible. Having said that I wouldn’t think this would be still happening next March.

The respiratory irritation can be bad for some. No one can predict how long it will last. I hope it will be gone by March, but who knows?

We live on Sarasota Bay and red tide has left here . I have lived here over 20 years and this was the worst for red tide but amazingly it did not bother my allergies . By March it will be a distant memory .

Around here (South TX) red tide seems to be a fall phenomenon and thankfully not every year. I guess you should find out if it’s common in March where you plan to visit.

The bigger issue with red tide is that it makes your throat itchy and you cough.... so even just being on the beach is uncomfortable.

Since traffic is so bad in March I should be scaring you off to go elsewhere, but alas, I can't ... red tide could happen in March but I don't ever recall it at that time of year over my years down there.

If you are there in March and the timing works, perhaps you can join us at our annual SWFL get-together.

Big +1 on that. Discovered many other posters too who appear to be in the SWFL area who could join us. Was a real success last year.
