What was Your Workout Today?

Machines will be FreeMotion. I am not familiar with that company, anyone have any experience with the FreeMotion machines? At least the free weights will remain, which is mostly what I use.
I use Freemotion Machines. (My current gym has them)I think they should be fine for you. The idea is to allow greater choice in ROM, angle of motion, etc. I mostly use the "Lift" which allows a good approximation of deadlifts, but I think safer.

On a completely unrelated topic I had a routine appointment with my doctor and asked him if my weight lifting was a problem due to my high blood pressure (not to mention overweight and so on). He said that in my case, he thought it would help more than harm. Whew! I'm so glad because I really like lifting weights.

I am in the same boat with the HBP and a bit overweight, but have not really discussed the weight lifting with my Dr. Glad to hear he gave you a thumbs up, cause I am hooked and would not want to give it up.

I have used Freemotion Macnines. (My current gym has them)I think they should be fine for you. The idea is to allow greater choice in ROM, angle of motion, etc.

Thats what the gym owner told me as well; that the machines provide good range of motion which makes them a bit more like free weights.

Despite having a home gym, I still get a lot of enjoyment going to my local gym. I like the atmosphere, and enjoy conversing with the members and trainers. Maybe I can be a part time trainer when I retire for the over 60 crowd:LOL:

Calisthenics on Friday, surfing today. More calisthenics tomorrow.

I can feel my pushup muscles hardening up already...

Today? Pushed a shopping cart all over Costco's. DW was in the market for a new TV for her bathroom. The TV's are displayed just as you get in the door, picked out a nice 24" Samsung, but I was mistaken that we were finished shopping. An hour later we were just getting in the checkout line. My exercise for the day.

Johnnie, An hour of that and I'd be good for a week both mentally and physically:D

We recently started supplementing our usual 2, ( 30-40 minutes each), daily workout sessions, (me on the elliptical and my bride on the NordicTrack ski machine), with a little stair walking.

Close by to where we live is a flight of wooden stairs comprised of 59 treads......we go early in the morning......this a.m. I did 30 repeats, (1770 upward steps....I alternate each repeat by taking two steps at a time on one climb, and one at a time on the next), my lady a little less....(young people, what can I say, she won't be 60 until October, while I hit 70 in September.......bone-on-bone knee osteoarthritis an' all).

We're feeling pretty good.

Ahhhh, July 1 = new month and therefore turning the page of my countdown to ER. I'm planning to do a Triathlon Sept 1 so I did a "brick" today, despite the heat/humidity here in NJ. Cycled 9+ moles followed by 4 mile run.

Today I did it 43 times.......look at that SWEAT!

Usual hour on the bike, chinups and pushups mixed in during a midway break. 90deg F here today with about another 10 or so in humidity on top by afternoon. I don't know how you Southerners do it.

I've always been a 15-18 mile per week runner when I worked. I've been retired 1 month and find its hard to get in a decent distance or run because I sleep so late now and it's already too hot (80° and 70% humidity) after my cup of coffee. I got in 19 last week, but thats not happening with the forecast for this week. I always dreamed of upping the mileage to 30-35 when I retired...maybe this fall?
Still looking for that normal routine...how long did it take you to find a routine after ER?

I've been running about 20 +/- miles per week for a few years and have been hoping to up it to 25-28 pre-retirement and up to about 27-30 post retirement. I was traveling for business in Stockholm last week and the weather there was perfect for my morning runs, and I found that after running in the very warm, musty, humid Tokyo monsoon season, that I shave quite a bit off my mins/km times. My point is that maybe by slogging thru the uncomfortable runs in the summer, you can more easily increase your miles (or your speed) in the autumn. Just a thought...

As noted, I run about 20 mpw. I have not run in a couple of days. I ran last on Wednesday evening with 60 of my employees for a charity run, about 4 miles. That morning, I had also gone 4 miles, at a pace that was very good for me (about 9:15/mile). My young employees though were slogging up hills at about 8:30/mile and this 50 year old kept up with most of them for most of the way, only falling back in the last few hundred yards. So, 8 miles on Weds. I have another charity event planned for tomorrow in Sendai, one of the areas in Japan hardest hit by last year's events. 20 or so of us will run 5 miles. At 50, I'm the geezer in the crowd by at least 10 years, and I'm hoping to keep up with my young guys and gals.

Surfing again!

Summer surf on the south shore is finally setting up. (Waves from Australia's winter storms have to work north across the equator to Hawaii.) Today was 5-8 with an occasional 10-footer. If you take off late you have to scoot all the way to the back of the board, keep the nose out of the water, and [-]pray[/-] go "down the elevator" before hitting the bottom turn. At one point I felt like I was flying... probably because I was, and that was one painful squat thrust at the bottom to change direction.

First workout since last Saturday. Our dojang is closed this week because the instructors and another 25+ students are in Dallas for the national tournament. Spouse has been getting progressively sicker (strep throat?) but she seems to be coming back from the worst of it. Maybe tomorrow we'll do our usual home workout, and if not then I'll finally weedwhack the back slope.

This morning I got back on my Schwinn 240 stationary bike for a while between my first and second cups of coffee. I forgot how much fun it is! With the AC and ceiling fan both cranked up, it wasn't even excessively hot so I was able to put some muscle into it without getting dangerously overheated. I watched the Tour de France simultaneously, and those guys are awesome! Definitely inspiring.

If anyone with a stationary bike is watching the Tour de France and not riding at the same time, you are missing out! :D

I ran 6 miles very early this morning. With temps in the high 90's and high humidity, my running group moved our start time up to 6:45am today. I did not enjoy getting up so early, but it was a good decision for the run.

Many moons ago, I had a Trek racing bike, silks, Campagnolo components and a set of rollers. Used to love watching the tour while riding on my rollers and it was a blast. I doubt that I could handle those rollers any more, but they were great for working on your form/balance.

My workout today was the one I detailed in post #51, with 20 weight machines. The average weight is now 82 pounds, so I lifted 16.4 tons. My next goal is to keep lifting at this level for a while.

And I did, three times a week for one month. Today I finally increased my weights, from an average 82 pounds to an average of 87.5 pounds. Doing the same 20 machines, for the same 2 sets and 10 reps, that comes out to 20x2x10x87.5/2000 = 17.5 tons and...

....the most I have ever lifted in a workout before in my entire life! :D

:dance::dance:  I finally broke through that physical/mental barrier that I was beating my head against for so long. :banghead:

Also I have been riding my exercycle every day lately, to try to get at least some small/pitiful amount of cardio in. I am not the hugest fan of cardio. Right now, just 15 minutes but hope to increase that soon.

Excellent.

I've been dwelling at the opposite end of the bell curve. Spouse is over her strep throat but won't be ready to work out until Friday. Taekwondo took last week off (the instructors were all at the national tournament) but I trained on Monday night. Surfing last week Thursday/Saturday wore me out, and "vigorous yardwork" filled in a couple of the blanks on the other days, but it's been a real rest week.

Our daughter just got home today and wants to skip taekwondo tonight, so we won't be back there until next Monday. She's so tired out from the last month of submarine training that she's begged off dawn patrol tomorrow, but I wonder if she'll have a change of heart when she wakes up...

I don't feel too bad about skipping all these workouts. I wish we were doing them, of course, but I don't feel bad enough about it to go do it on my own.

You were pretty sick not so long ago, as I am sure you recall, and it sounds like that drained your energy temporarily. Hope your workouts can get back to normal before too long.

Meanwhile, I have not felt stronger or healthier in years. So, I am enjoying it. :)

Went to Boot Camp with DW at her gym. An hour of pushups, jumping jacks, lunges, and other stuff I'm not used to. Great workout, but I'll stick to my normal routine for awhile. I have an introductory appt with a trainer at her gym. Maybe I'll become a gym rat during the winter.

Completed essentially the same workout as Wednesday (the same on all machines except 5 pounds higher on a couple of them). So now, I feel settled in at this level. What a great feeling. :) I am getting a Polar heart rate monitor, to be delivered tomorrow, and hopefully that should provide some information on calories used, target heart rate, and so on.

I've had a Polar for several years. It's great but the thing I don't like is you have to send it back to them for battery replacement. Maybe that's changed, if so I'll buy a new one.

Yes, that has changed, so if you want a new one you can get one with a user-replaceable battery. Mine (an FT7) does, and I think all the others do too now.

My workout today consisted of watching another guy work out! I'm not kidding. DW was busy with the girls today and not having anything pressing I decided to go up to our gym and get back in the routine. I walk into the gym and immediately see this guy stretching on a workout mat. I sign in and get on a warmup bike looking right at this guy. He is oriental and was a perfect specimen of good health. I guess everything he was doing would be considered Tai Chi. He got into the danggest positions I ever saw and was really pushing it. He must have worked about 45 minutes, all on this mat. I saw him sit crosslegged on the mat and bend over with his head touching the floor. It hurt me just watching and he would have been a good commercial for Tai Chi. I must have peddled 25 miles but it was at a slow pace and with my mouth gapped open. I got a lot of jaw exercize and not much else. I was impressed (and jealous).

I'll bet it was great to have some entertainment while you were riding on that exercise bike, Johnnie! :D
