What did you do today? 2017 version

I've been training DD's dog.
Down-stay, come, and heel. Smart dog!

If you want to have some fun, train the dog to respond to commands in Swedish.

I used to have a friend who trained his Akita dog to only respond to commands in Japanese, and another friend who trained his German Shepherd to only respond to commands in German.

It was fun to watch people trying to get the dogs to do things in response to English commands after they were told how smart the dogs were.

DW's Christmas present from me was stuck in Dallas (Priority Mail delay since Wednesday). I got a text last night from the (worthless) Post Office tracking system that it wouldn't be delivered until 12/27. :(

As I walked out the door this morning at 7:00 AM to walk the dog, there was a package laying on the door mat (I almost stepped on it). IT WAS DW'S PRESENT!

I don't know how the P.O. made this happen, but I am happy! :)

Wonderful! Merry Christmas to you and your DW. :D

Thanks W2R, DW will be thrilled! And Merry Christmas to you and F also! :)
Thank you!

We are leaving in about 10 minutes for our annual Christmas Eve dinner with his extended family. It is always in a private room at an old, very expensive Sicilian restaurant here and the food is utterly sublime. I have been looking forward to it all year. :D

Decorated my home and did all the preliminaries for Christmas dinner tomorrow. It’s nice to have an excuse to use the good silverware!

Watched a little football and now "It's a Wonderful Life" just started.?

Made a beer run to a brewery that is normally 40 minutes away. Not today. Snow and icy roads slowed me down. First time I had my new truck in 4wd. I stopped to help an elderly lady who did a 360 and took out a road sign on her way into the ditch. She was ok, but asked me if I could drive her truck out of the ditch. But first I had to dislodge the road sign from her front bumper.

Went over to DW's daughter's for an early dinner with the two year old twin girls and their six year old (as of 5 days ago) sister.

Six year old and a friend were playing outside in a snow bank, and were told not to dig tunnels.

Six year old comes in to say that they weren't building a tunnel, but they were "Building entrances that were connected".

Can Law School be far away?

Wow good thing for her you came along!

I started painting the entryway. Before I went up this ladder to tape and prep the high part I texted a friend and told her that if I didn’t text back in 10 minutes it was likely I was dead and she should call the paramedics.

Did you live? ;)

Just came back from a big family potluck meal. After lunch, we sat outside on the patio sipping XO Cognac and a 21-year-old Scotch. That Scotch was well aged and so smooth, it could be confused with good Cognac. :) We did not get in until the sun got low and it turned chilly.

It was last year that my brother also hosted the Christmas get-together. And we were also outside in the pleasant Southwest winter afternoon sipping good booze. Who knows how many occasions like this I have left? Life was great.

Christmas day started at 5:30 am. Poured Kahlua into the first CUP!
After opening the gifts, we received reports that FIL had significantly worsened over night. Spent a long day at the facility.
Then off to daughter's future family for a quick dinner.
Gonna finish the evening in my easy chair, with little dog, watching my team.

Of course I just had another Kahlua and coffee...

Hoping I'll get a chance to let him know his team is #1 seed, tomorrow morning.

Normally, we get together with family and friends over the holidays. My wife and I host Thanksgiving and one of my siblings hosts Christmas. We usually have around 25+ in attendance. This year, due to my health conditions, we need to avoid crowds.

So my wife and I spent a quiet day in our vacation/weekend/future retirement house in Maine. Once the snow stopped, we shoveled a bit, cleaned off some of the neighbors' cars and driveways, then took a nice walk (being careful not to fall on the icy road).

We had a delicious lunch of lobster stew. Then we cleaned up, packed up, and headed for home.

Tomorrow, I go in for the 3rd of 6 infusion treatments for lymphoma. If things go well, I will be done with treatments in January. And then we can go back to enjoying crowds of friends and family.

Up a little before 8 and started prepping some of the christmas dinner while DW made a nice breakfast. After breakfast the snow had stopped so spent a few hours cleaning up here and at the church.

Did some more dinner prep and then the three kids, their significant others, and two grandkids started showing up. Opened presents had dinner and relaxed for awhile. Everyone's gone home now, time to rest ?.

Not looking forward to the next few weeks, looks like it's going to be very chilly with highs in the teens and twentys and lows near or below zero for a few nights. Brrrr

We had Xmas brunch with the family yesterday, so it was just the two of us for Xmas dinner today. Friday i scored a 2 bone rib eye roast, so DW decided we would have it for dinner. She has an interesting recipe called "No Peekie Roast Beefy" where you roast it for a short time at a very high temperature then let it sit in the cooling oven for at least 2 hours.
So she put it in the oven, waited for the cooking period to finish, turned the oven off, and we went to the movies.
We saw "The Greatest Showman", and enjoyed it. When we got home, the roast was done perfectly, medium rare throughout:)

If it’s real smart, train it to respond to hand signals without verbal cues. The future SIL’s dog can do that, and it’s kind of cool.

This afternoon DH and I took an unexpected drive to deliver gifts to DD and her fiancé. They planned to come for dinner tomorrow but the fiancé is very ill with an upper respiratory infection. He doesn’t feel well enough to be socializing and we really don’t want the germs in the house. They live about 90 minutes away but DD met us partway so we didn’t have to drive the entire distance.
Yes, he can do that. Now working on crawl because it's easy. Down, say crawl, hold treat out, no, down, etc.

Gave dd and fiance gift certificate to obedience school.

You climb ladders, prep and paint!
Will you marry me?:flowers:

Lol! I just hate paying for things that I can do. I replaced the stair balusters as well. The price for those to be done by someone else was insane, so I ordered the ones I wanted, bought the correct saw, measured and cut, installed. Easy!

Went to Christmas dinner with our buddies who we traveled France with in October. He just returned for open heart surgery in Houston on the 21st. Looking good but somewhat cantankerous as he comes to grips with his new mortality. Gave his wife our full support.

I was woken at 2:00 AM by the alarm on my septic pump...not the most calming way to wake up!!

It was -29C and no way I was going outside, slogging through the snow and shining a flashlight down the tank to see what's up...and what can you do at 2:00 AM Christmas night anyway?

I shut the alarm off, checked the level in the floor drain (normal) and went back to sleep. This morning I took a look at the tank and all looks well. I unplugged the alarm and plugged it back in to re-set it and it hasn't gone off since. I checked the tank again an hour ago and all still looks well, but of course I'll be keeping an eye on it for the next few days...
