NFL: 2019 Season

I'm not sure if this is a prove it contract - "New England is giving Brown a one-year deal worth up to $15 million, Rosenhaus said. It includes a $9 million signing bonus, $10 million guaranteed and $5 million in incentives."

Yup. If those numbers are correct, Brown got a pretty good deal. Better than I would have expected. Still lower numbers than his Oakland contract.

Still, the contract is only for one year, and I'd bet it includes language such that the "guaranteed" money goes away if Brown acts up - just like his Oakland contract did.

If he learns to toe the line, it's good deal for him, with a huge free agency again next year. If not (shrug).

Talent wise the Pats now have the best receiving corps in the NFL. Gordon, Brown, Edelman and Thomas. Character wise a very suspect one.

Time will tell whether this will turn into a Randy Moss/Corey Dillon type of signing or an Ocho Cinco/Adelius Thomas.

As a Pats fan I'm not too crazy about this acquisition especially when they're given him money upfront.

The Pats have easily survived risky contracts that didn't work out before. If Brown flames out, it won't hurt the Pats enough to matter.

It depends on what you mean by "easily survived". Surviving this contract for the long term is not a problem since it's a one year deal but if they don't win the SB this year because he poisoned or distracted the locker room it will be a bust especially when they were Vegas' favorite to win it before this acquisition.

I don't think any team should have signed him but Pats would be mine first choice. Hopefully he is enough of a distraction to keep them out of the SB.

Funny. I have a feeling that if he acts up they'll sit him for a bit to send a message and then if he continues to misbehave they'll let him go... IOW "our way or the highway". Mr. Kraft can afford it if he is a bust.

I've learned to not follow what players do while misbehaving in the off season so don't even know what Brown did. Probably better too keep the blinders on.

Being part of a team that has a really good chance of winning another SB should be motivation enough to focus on football. If not, I'd think Belichick and the Pats won't mess around and put up long with the non-football drama.

+1. The Pats have a long history of not tolerating prima donnas no matter how talented they are (e.g. Randy Moss) and I don’t know why Brown would be any different.

And Brady has a career long history of finding a connection with whoever they put on the field with him. It's pretty remarkable how often a star leaves (even one Brady seems close to e.g. Welker), a relative unknown comes in (Edelman), and they find a way to make it work within a season if not quicker.

Who was the latest Patriots acquisition who poisoned or distracted the locker room enough to cost them a chance at the Super Bowl?

It just hasn't happened. They don't always hit with free agents, but one bad player never takes this team down.

They'll be in the hunt this year with or without Brown. It's a risk worth taking.

All team owners could afford it if they wanted to.

They are all rich. Most are billionaires. Kraft isn't the richest.

I think AB's sharper then a lot of people give him credit for. He wanted to go from the Steelers to the Pats. Steelers wouldn't trade him there, they sent him off to Oakland. He comes out here and throws a hissy fit. He calls the GM a cracker which is unacceptable, never actually practices so cannot get hurt, and the GM dumps him off to the Pats. Which is where he wanted to go in the 1st place. Everybody says he's a primadona and stupid. Actually this is the only way he could have gotten to the Pats. Sharp

I would never use the term "sharp" for Antonio. Terrific receiver, but an odd duck.

While it's clear that the Patriots were willing to give the Steelers a 1st round choice in exchange for Brown, and it's clear he wanted to get out of Pittsburgh, it's not at all clear that he wanted to go solely to the Patriots.

And it's not at all clear that his actions were calculated to get him there. It could easily have ended differently. It still might, if he doesn't get smart quickly.

Everybody says he's a primadona and stupid.
He was a primadonna. That had better change if he wants to stay a Patriot.

He's the Pat's problem now. Helmet temper tantrums and all

If he continues with the tantrums, he won't be the Pats' problem for long. (see: Moss, Randy.)

...I think the play in the NFL has gone down since the last bargaining agreement. Less padded practices, little off season work.

Nobody plays the stars in preseason so the first few games are what the old preseason used to be.
Seahawks pulled out a squeaker win in their home opener. I'll take it. Go Hawks!

I wish Direct TV had a feature to block the sport casters commentary. (Opt out) but still hear the crowd and referees comments. I'm not sure who irritates me more. Chris Collinsworth, Joe Buck or Al Michaels.

I miss John Madden.

+1. Great start to the season last night, though embarrassingly lopsided. Some of our best friends are Steelers fans, not sure what to say...

Totally agree.

Madden is all out there, living life big.

I still remember his coaching years and him wearing those hagger slacks with the big luggage tag. Quirky. Memorable. Big.

The Cleveland Browns put on what could only be called a DUMPSTER FIRE !

-18 penalties for 182 yards...3 personal fouls in one series, including an ejection.
-Due to injuries on the O line, Baker Mayfield sacked 5 times, and intercepted 3 times
-One "sack" was an obvious quick whistle, because Mayfield escaped on his feet.
-Missed extra point on first drive.

I still have hope for Believeland this season.

Buck! He's a blithering idiot!

On happier note was the expulsion of Jack during the Chiefs Jag game. I thought he did a great job of impersonating a small child having a temper tantrum.

Well the Falcons forgot to get off the bus and go to the field. They were outmatched in all three phases. But... even with that, they were their own worst enemy. A fumble on the 20 yard line, an interception in the red zone when Ryan was throwing the ball away and didn't give it enough to get out.

I thought the refs were a non issue and did their job pretty well. There was a helmet to helmet to WR Gage that was not called . He stumbled to the sidelines walked around for a moment then collapsed and is in concussion protocol.

At the end of the day the Vikings brought their A game and the Falcons didnt. On to next week.

It could be worse, you could be a Dolphins fan.... 59-10 loss to the Ravens and facing the Patriots who spanked the Steelers 33-3 next week.

But having attended the last Patriots-Dolphins game in Miami last December where the Dolphins snatched victory from the jaws of defeat on the last play of the game.... on any given Sunday who knows what will happen.

The Cowboys looked great against the Giants yesterday but as much as I hate to admit it, the Patriots looked even better against the Steelers. That was as good as I've ever seen them play even without "The Gronk"... Of course they were playing at home where they always seem to play very well, but still, they were absolutely awesome last night.
