What was your COVID news for the day?

Mean, cruel, and horribly unfair. How could you doubt it?
:D

:ROFLMAO: Rodi, I think you are a wonderful, giving, exemplary Mom! I think your teenager will figure this out in a couple of years and he will be so grateful.

When I was in high school, I had to find out when and where the SATs were myself, sign up for them myself, find a ride out to the unfamiliar school where they were being given myself, and since I didn't know people prepared for them (or how?) I didn't do any prep at all, much less get a prep course for them. (I know, call in the Four Yorkshiremen! :ROFLMAO: ) Your son should be so happy due to the "step up" you have given him. Even if he doesn't take the SAT, he is learning skills which could be very helpful later on.

For those of you who have an hour to spare, this video from Dr. David Price, a doctor in New York treating COVID-19 patients extensively, is worth watching. Apologies if it has already been posted elsewhere. This thread is getting really long.

In summary:

1) Wash your hands wash your hands wash your hands.
2) Don’t touch your face, especially when outside your home.
3) Don’t worry about going grocery shopping. Keep six feet away from others. You will be fine.
4) Don’t worry about going out and taking walks or getting exercise. Again just keep six feet away.
5) No need for N95 masks unless you are within very short distance of a person who is spraying a lot of stuff out of their mouth, like in a hospital exam situation. Personal masks are good for keeping you from infecting others though.
6) Stop panicking. As long as you follow the guidelines you will not get infected and you can go on a live your life again.

But I am getting an email each morning that says the package is on the Fed Ex truck and will be delivered today. Got the same email this morning, will see what happens. This is an item that I am really needing.

Whenever I have something very important coming FedEx I just call them and have them hold at their facility and go pick it up, 90 min round trip but well worth it.

I am the person with the missing Fed Ex delivery. Finally got a email this afternoon from the supplier the the package had been damaged by Fed Ex and the seller gave me a refund. Mystery solved. I still need to find the item I ordered. I might try eBay next.

I didn't know if I should post this here in the News of the Day or over in the Travel Impacts thread:

Moreno, 44, was charged Wednesday in federal court with one count of train wrecking, ....

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/04/02/train-derails-usns-mercy-coronavirus/

At the last minute, Moreno lit a flare. He looked up at the camera, raising his middle finger to it. Then, just before the train smashed through the concrete barriers, he stuck the flare out the window, keeping it there all the way through impact.

He told the detectives, “I can’t wait to see the video.”

Please tell me that none of you would do such a crazy thing.

Sounds interesting, but it is behind Jeff Bezo's wall.

Our local Oberweis store charges $8.99/quart for premium ice cream. The sale is 4 qts. for $21. Savings of $15. Bought 4 qts. and gained 2 lbs. in 2.5 days. My choices were:
Dark Raspberry with dark chocolate chips
Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt
Dark Chocolate and Peanut Butter and I decided to cut some of the fat with Lemon Sorbet.

Saw a report of a Gallup poll asking what how long it would take before you would come out of self isolating..

7% said they would stay self isolated until a vaccine came out and presumably get a shot..

What the heck, do they any idea how long that will take?

Probably not. We still don't have a SARS vaccine and that outbreak occurred in 2003. Nor for MERS, which started in 2012.

Farm groups are asking the USDA to buy up surplus dairy products.

Seven of Wisconsin’s largest farm groups have asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to use its extensive purchasing power to buy large amounts of dry milk, butter and cheese that normally would be going to restaurants and the food-service industry.

Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association, Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative, Dairy Business Association, Cooperative Network, Wisconsin Farm Bureau Federation, Professional Dairy Producers of Wisconsin, and Wisconsin Farmers Union say the current circumstances, far beyond their control, are beginning to result in farms having no place to accept their milk.

In fact, this week some large Wisconsin dairy operations have begun dumping milk because there is no buyer for it.

“With 80 percent of Americans under order to shelter in their homes, hundreds of thousands of restaurants, schools and other food service outlets have closed or significantly reduced offerings, which means cheese and butter manufacturers have lost their largest market. While retail sales have increased in past weeks, they are now leveling, and orders are slowing. Dairy manufacturers and processors also have seen their export markets decimated,” the Wisconsin farm groups said in their letter to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue.

“Commodity dairy prices have plummeted and will result in milk prices lower than many farms can handle to sustain long-term viability,” the letter said.

You and I need to have virtual ice cream party.. We have a friend, lifelong bachelor with many health issues. He hasn't left his home in over 3 weeks. He started feeling poorly which isn't unusual for him. Began to panic he had the virus and was so scared he took around 7 sleeping pills in the last 3 days.

My DH called him on his cell and when he picked up he sounded like he was dying. Couldn't talk and said he was short of breath. We told him to call his doctor. Long story short most of the issue was from too many sleeping pills.

3 hours later he sounded a lot better. Then came the lecture from me about the sleeping pills. I hung up the phone went to my freezer and had an ice cream sundae at 5PM...my DH had a shot of 40 creek!!

We're currently out of ice cream, but it's high on the list for my next shopping trip! (probably on Monday)

Maybe those 7% are in the high risk group?

Certainly could be, but they might be pinning their hopes on a unicorn...remember how long it took to get the new shingles shots out and available to people? They have find a vaccine, produce it and get it into the general public.

I found this article to be an interesting analysis of the various issues affecting the ability and timing to make a vaccine. Even 18 months appears to be optimistic.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/03/31/us/coronavirus-vaccine-timetable-concerns-experts-invs/index.html

Decent article.

I've been thinking about the SARs vaccine, and how it languished. There seems to be a lot of finger pointing these days. But when it comes to a vaccine, spread the blame around. The WHO, and multiple administrations from every side of the isle among all the Western countries let SARs fall on the floor. It wasn't "our" problem. It was a problem in another part of the world.

In retrospect, once SARs emerged, it was only a matter of time another variant would rise again. Having a vaccine for SARs-1 would have gotten us very far to the latest version. But that's water over the dam.

I also doubt the 18 months, but I do think we finally have a lot of brains on this, which is going to help. Unfortunately, trials take time. It is the old problem: 9 woman can't make a baby in a month.

In fairness to the SARS vaccine from what I understand, they pretty much quit looking for a vaccine when it waned. One of the reasons they've made such quick progress on a covid vaccine is because they were able to use a lot of the info from the tabled SARS vaccine work.

Unemployment claims double to 6.6 million.

I've mentioned it before but economists at the St. Louis Federal Reserve project 50+ million job losses by the end of this quarter, roughly one-third of the total labor force.

Not really seeing a "V-shaped" recovery here...

I really don't remember the whole world shutting down and the market dropping 30% when SARS was out.

9 women can't make a baby in 1 month, but properly motivated, 50 companies might be able to come up with a vaccine faster than 1 company.

My cousin, who is a nurse, CV19 test came back negative. She's never been so happy to have a bad flu.

Agree.

We still have that damn trial period, though.

Many of us remember the swine flu vaccine debacle in the 70s.

It isn't like the trial period for a cancer drug though, where you have to wait 3 years to see OS or PR.

Data could be collected in efficacy in a matter of months, especially with the hot zones we have now.

It takes something like 10 years now to develop and test a new plane design but in war time a country can do the whole process in 6 months.
