This looks very promising.

US Army Creates Single Vaccine Against All COVID & SARS Variants

Within weeks, scientists at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research expect to announce that they have developed a vaccine that is effective against COVID-19 and all its variants, even Omicron, as well as previous SARS-origin viruses that have killed millions of people worldwide.

The achievement is the result of almost two years of work on the virus.

If this story is true and the vaccine pans out as described, it will be by far the biggest news story of the decade... maybe the century. Imagine a world forever free of COVID lockdowns, restrictions, and anxieties!

The one upside of the pandemic: 20 years of virus research getting compressed into 36 months. There will be massive long term upside to what we're learning now.

I hope it works.

There isn't really anything particularly magical about this approach. It is commonly referred to as "polyvalent vaccines" which means one shot provides the ability to generate immunity against more than one serotype. For a good example, google "Pneumovax 23" which is a pneumococcal vaccine that works against 23 different strains of the bacterium.
The US Army work is exploring a central vaccination scaffold that allows addition of new spike protein sequences as they arise. Each time you want to add a new strain, there will be re-engineering (and clinical trial work) needed to cover new variants, so while I don't want to rain on any parades (and I'm all for researching a wide variety of approaches), this will not end the pandemic any time soon, even if it DOES work as intended and even if for some magical reason we are able to convince the "never vaxers" to actually take the shot.

Not to mention overwhelmed hospitals, deaths, kidney, heart, and pancreatic damage as well as amputations.

Next to clean water and food safety, vaccines are the most effective preventative health measure ever developed. The first vaccine ever developed was the smallpox vaccine. The second one was the whole cell pertussis vaccine, in 1914. The rest of the vaccines are less than 100 years old: diphtheria toxoid in 1923, tetanus toxoid in 1924, then polio, and all the rest.

It’s hard to believe most of the vaccines in use today were developed after many of us were born. And during my career spanning 1984-2019, I saw meningitis virtually eliminated, due to vaccination.

This is truly an exciting development.

They need clinical trials on unvaccinated and uninfected targets. It will be a while before results are available.

If that pans out as hoped, that would be wonderful.

Maybe I missed it, but I wonder if the excerpt below in blue from the article means that "herd immunity" doesn't apply to this virus for some reason? Or maybe being "infected" doesn't necessarily mean getting sick?

With Omicron, there's no way really to escape this virus. You're not going to be able to avoid it. So I think pretty soon either the whole world will be vaccinated or have been infected,” Modjarrad said.

+1

“One Vaccine to rule them all, One Vaccine to find them, One Vaccine to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.”

I think we’ve already learned that herd immunity does not apply to this virus in terms of being 100% immune to infection and transmitting it. And considering how high the asymptomatic cases are (estimated as high as 40% at times) of course infected (and infectious) does not necessarily mean getting sick.

It seemed like a "absolute statement" but that's the way I was interpreting it too... Sort of...

Not that you’re saying otherwise, but if a vaccine clearly lessens the severity to those infected, I’d consider the vaccine highly beneficial. 100% immunity isn’t possible, nor should it be the goal - that expectation has been the root of much hesitancy for some. ‘Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good.’

Just like the flu vaccine. “The more people that get vaccinated against the flu, the less the flu can spread. It also helps with herd immunity, helping to protect those who can’t get the vaccine for medical reasons.

Vaccination can also help lessen the severity of the illness if you do end up getting the flu.”

Where will they find unvaccinated?

That are willing to get Vaccinated?

WOW! I hope that I possible.

It would be great to have a vax that worked to combat all variants, although I’m not sure how that would be possible. It seems that the current booster works well against Delta, but not Omicron. My best friend and her husband went to a party with around 20-25 people on 12/22. Everyone there was vaccinated and boosted. Several have now tested positive for COVID. Fortunately they all have very mild symptoms - scratchy throat, light congestion, and somewhat lower energy level. Omicron doesn’t seem to last very long as they’re being advised to retest on 12/31 and most got initial test on 12/27.

I've been participating in a phase 2 clinical trial for a new covid vaccine. The phase 3 clinical trial is underway and is being conducted entirely in Singapore. Singapore has enough unvaccinated people to participate, and has enough covid cases to be an adequate test.

They wanted to do the phase 3 trial in the U.S. but could not find enough (more than 15,000) unvaccinated people who wanted to participate.

The study drug is be being jointly developed by Duke University and the National University of Singapore. If the phase 3 trial is successful, the FDA will send a team to Singapore to review the study and determine whether or not to approve it in the U.S.
