2022 workout thread

As I age I find that not injuring myself is rule #1 when it comes to exercise. One good injury that might have taken 3-7 days to heal when I was in my 40's can now take over a month. Needless to say that puts a huge damper on keeping in shape.

I do a lot of loosening up type of exercises to keep me mobile. I've never been very flexible/limber. Even as a teenager touching my toes was hard. I want to keep as much as I can. I also use resistance bands three times a week to add some strength. I was walking a lot but for the last two weeks, ice and snow have made that rather hazardous. One good fall and I'm out of action for weeks, maybe a month or more. See above paragraph.

Today, I will head to the local Buy More Super Store and walk the perimeter several times. I wonder if they know they have provided me with an indoor track? Before that I will do about 30 minutes of stretching and strength exercises.

I have a minimum daily routine I try to do six days a week: pushups, plank, leg stretches, back stretches, ankle range of motion, and a special hip stretch a physical therapist gave me to keep my hips aligned. It takes about 20 minutes and if I have a very busy day planned, or I'm traveling, or otherwise pressed for time I just do that.

Overall, I am a pansy compared to all of your who pump iron 5 days a week, then run or fast walk 3- 5 miles a day. And I think I am a lot better than many of my peers who can't walk the local hills without stopping for air every 5 minutes.

I ordered some resistance bands last night. Hopefully they get here before we move to our next location. I'm used to weights and walking and pushups only can do so much.

Today:
- walked 48 minutes
- body weight squats - 4 sets of 25

DW and I need to do something outside every day. Some days are tougher than others. 40 deg this morning and drizzly. Still got a 2 mile walk in with the pooch this morning and the day is still young! Hope you have more fun today. The Norwegians have a word for this . Friluftsliv. it essentially means "a commitment to celebrating time outdoors, no matter the weather forecast." We try to embrace that and be outside as much as possible.
In 2021 we walked the dog an estimated 1400 miles plus another 30 or so hikes with him of 4 to 5 miles each and I also try to do a weekly 4 mile mountain hike year round which is fairly strenuous(1800ft elevation gain in 2 miles) and I got 38 in this year. We squeezed in (3) 4000 footer hikes in the NH White mountains each with over 3000 feet of elevation gain.
I don't think we missed a single day in all of 2021 without a good walk or a hike.:)Think I totaled around 1700 miles of varying terrain for the year. We do it as much for the mental health benefits as the physical.
Plan on similar this year.:)

So far today I counted dusting and mopping the hard floors as it is below zero with fresh snow outside. I am going to go walk outside this afternoon, probably one mile with boots on will do it for me.

I am enjoying this thread.

Light workout today:

- pushups, 4 sets of 20
- lunges (no weight), 4 sets of 20

Today, walked outside with a friend 1.5 miles
One hour of yoga this evening.
11,000 steps

My workout today: 45 minutes spin on the Peloton bike.

I really need to add some resistance training to my workout. I guess I was thinking I would do so after my FIRE date on Jan 21st (since I thought we were going to be back in the office in early January - and the commute limits my workout time). Since I now know we're remote (though I do have to be in the office for 4 days the week of the 18th) I can probably go ahead and start with 1 or 2 times a week.

I tend to like cardio more than strength training but I just need to establish the habit (which will be so much easier when I have full control over my day!)

DW and I walk 2.3 miles in 31 minutes, five days a week
The other two days are 1 hour pilates with my BIL and my sister is the instructor.

Biking/Walking 3 times per week

Resistance Training= Total Gym and Bodylastic Bands 2 times per week

hurt both elbows with the training around Thanksgiving (Golf and Tennis Elbow) Seeing the chiropractor twice a week, and almost ready to resume workouts.

Today I have a few side effects from my second Shingles shot....so I have only walked 1 mile outside this morning when I still felt ok. Hopefully I can close my red ring on my Apple Watch today.

I skipped yesterday's workout because 1) I had to brush off the car and shovel the walk and driveway, and 2) I'm trying to allow myself one day a week off. So no matter how much I wanted to skip today, I did 30 minutes on the elliptical (2.1 miles, 188 calories burned, avg. HR 160). And I did a little more shoveling and brushing, but much lighter than yesterday. :)

Planning 5 miles a day in January. Yesterday I walked 20 miles and a further 13 miles today, 53 miles in January to date, so we’ll on course to achieve goal.:D

Wow. 20 miles is a long day.

Yes, 5 hours 36 minutes. We had a 20 minute break for a tea about halfway in. It was a beautiful sunny but cold day.
Very fast pace as well. Congrats. I do 3-5 miles/day with the dog.:)

Completed 2021 exceeding my goal of 550 miles hiking. I had increased it 50miles a year since 2018, so 2022 is 600 miles. I hike with our youngest dog and have access to literally a dozen expanses of parks, conservation land, trusts etc. Never get tired of it. Some have mild hills, most are pretty flat. Walking on sidewalks and tracks is boring to me. A bit tough in New England winters sometimes. I do spike my boots for ice, but I don't snowshoe. Turn 60 in a few weeks.....

Good luck to all with your plans.....!

Canine, what’s your Peloton name? Let’s follow each other!
I did 2 30 minute rides today!

Sitting on the spin bike right now. Goal is one hour. Did a 30 min walk this morning. Will do another later this afternoon. Maybe some weights too.

Great to hear Cocheese!
It’s amazing to see how far “a bike that goes nowhere” can take you!
Keep up the good work! [emoji106][emoji3]

I have a set of tri bars on it and the iPad fits perfectly on top of them. I have all my videos, podcasts and forums at my fingertips.

45 minute walk today. Was going to do more but can feel it a bit in my meniscus so stopped early.

I was also going to do more pushups but the resistance bands I ordered are scheduled to be delivered tomorrow and I want to try them out...I don't work the same muscles 2 days in a row.

76 and goal is a good workout 75% of the days in 2022.

A “good” workout can range from a 45 minute walk (on my lighter days) to a 30 min walk + a warmup (10-15 minutes) on my ancient Nordic Track X-C machine or rower + a Team Body Project (a subscription) workout of about 30 minutes. That’s on my heavier days. I try to alternate at least 2 heavy days with 1 light day. I have a way-too-anal point system I developed to score the relative values of workouts. Where I’m deficient is I weights/resistance which I’ve never been able to stick with for the long haul. Fortunately, many of the Body Project routines include some resistance.

ETA: I did one of the heavier workouts today.
