Think I'm Going Nuts

salted roasted almonds are definitely a weakness of mine too. Once I start it is hard to stop and I can't really call the caloric intake from them snacking. :p

I get the lightly salted regular peanuts, plus I gave up potato chips for them, so all relative.

We keep a supply of pecans, walnuts, almonds and hazel nuts around as well as dried fruit. They make for healthy snacks plus DW uses the nuts for baking. Most of the stuff comes from Costco or Trader Joe's.

I like all nuts - :)

Peanuts, filberts, almonds, macadamia, cashews, brazils, coconuts, pistachios, add seeds, pumpkin, sunflower, poppy, caraway.

Add any "brittle" from any and all above.

Yeah, Nuts!

DH is a nut roasting wizard!

Our main mix is mostly pecans and macadamia nuts with some almonds and walnuts added. Spiced up with a little cayenne.

DH does low temperature roasting to preserve the nutrients.

I forgot, Cajun Boiled Peanuts, hot and wet in the bag!

I buy the Costco Fancy Mixed Nuts in the big container for $14.99 and hit those for a handful every once in a while.

Costco nuts are a great value. At least I have to do a little work for the pistachios in the shell! I'm not good at moderating how many I eat so I don't buy them often.

I snack on a mix of Trader Joes unsalted roasted almonds, unsalted walnut pieces, and unsalted roasted Oregon hazelnuts. Walnuts and almonds have some of the highest health benefits, and hazelnuts are lower carb than cashews or pecans.

Recently, I been reading about eating healthier. One way is adding nuts to the diet. I read that almonds (about an ounce a day) is healthy. One of the benefits is almonds help in fighting bad LDL cholesterol and with prediabetes. What? Sounds almost too good to be true.
Do you still have your gall bladder? If you don't, you might want to approach almonds s-l-o-w-l-y. My GB suddenly wanted out about 10 years ago. Never had any issues without it. I'm not a fatty meat eater, meaning I avoid excess fat on meats, always have. Not a sausage eater, either.

I came across roasted no salt almonds a few years after GB surgery, and bought a bag. Really liked them, snacked every evening on them. For about a week. Then one morning had sudden unexpected "leakage". Never had anything like that in my life! It went on for days, and bowel movements were, shall we say, "well lubricated". Too well... for a week [this may be TMI for some of you, but I think that people age 60 or over can/should be able to discuss just about anything, other than politics or religion or that you really like that incredibly crappy song "Honey" by Bobby Goldsboro].

The issue did not go away after stopping eating almonds. It took some days, at least a week, for my system to finally purge the excess fat that was not being broken down. For those days, I never went anywhere nor scheduled anything. It slowly trailed off. So glad it was over!
Some internet research at the time found that almonds were prime candidates for that effect.
I still have very small amounts of almonds, usually encased in chocolate:)

I forgot pecans and walnuts too. Especially in shell - :)

Just for the record here, peanuts are technically beans, not nuts.
Still really good, though!

Conundrum: diverticulitis.

Nuts and seeds have great anti-inflammatory properties: GOOD.
Nuts and seeds have skins that get trapped in the folds: BAD.

I don't have it yet, I have diverticulosis, according to my GI doc after looking at my colon. I have the folds ready to trap stuff.

So far, so good. I tend to put most of my nuts (except skinless peanuts) in my smoothies where I blend the daylights out of them. Or, I just buy ground flax.

I have some kind of nut every day.

My favorite is filberts (hazelnuts). So far, I have only found these as part of mixed-nuts collections.

I have never seen hazel nuts on the nut aisle, but most grocery stores sell them in the bulk food area. I don't like hazel nuts by themselves, but occasionally use them in a brussels sprouts salad.

It's probably more important to concentrate on freshness with ground flax even more than some of the other things mentioned in this thread because once ground, it oxydizes much more quickly.

.

check out Oregon Hazelnuts on the internet. Many farms sell retail direct, and landscapers use the shells for mulch.

Oh yeah, I love brittle. I never realized there was any kind other that peanut brittle. Then I had some cashew brittle. Oh man was that good! Probably negates some of the health benefits, but very tasty.

DW occasionally goes to a quilting shop in Amish country and always brings me back some cashew brittle she gets at a nearby store. Incredible stuff!

Here's a recipe (couldn't be simpler):

AMISH "CRACK" CASHEW CRUNCH

So, I tried the 1 oz of almonds a day for the past few days.

Think I'm gonna have to cut back and try 1/2 oz a day. My tummy will thank me.

I'll put some in a small dish (about the size you would put cocktail sauce in) and take it into another room. I try not to go back for seconds...

I find that they are filling and can really curb my appetite. Just have to have the willpower for about 20 minutes or so for your brain to know that.

So for about 150 calories they can wreck my appetite for dinner which is good. Unfortunately I sometimes mix them with M & Ms.

But yes, nuts in moderation are supposed to be really healthy. I usually have cashews or peanuts. I'm afraid I will break a tooth on almonds ( and my dentist mentioned that also).

I aborted my almonds regimen. After only having 2 almonds today, my belly got upset.

Guess I'll stick to something my belly can tolerate like junk food.

When traveling overseas and I get an upset digestive system I go on a diet of white bread, butter, ice cream, and apples. 50% ice cream, 40% white bread and butter, 10% apples. And a bit of wine. It works. Really.

Don't overdo the almonds. They are high in Oxalates which cause kidney stones. I used to eat them but after that kidney stone surgery they are off the menu. And I am not "prone" to kidney stones. I had never had one until I was 62 years old.

Ditto I was eating nuts nearly every day for years...Last month I passed 6 kidney stones in three weeks..Still have 3 in my bladder..

I can't imagine. I've heard they are incredibly painful to pass.
