RobbieB haven't seen you around for awhile

Hope he's ok.
My feeling is that he's doing fine. He has been going off the grid (not logging in) for many months at a time in the last two years. As much as I like this forum, some people do leave.

I did notice Haha also hadn't been around for sometime.

I hope he is okay, my wife and I met up with him in 2012 (11 years ago!!) while on our travels and he gave us a walking tour around the less touristy areas of Seattle. Really nice guy.

Robbie B's last post was not a happy one. Perhaps just taking a break or potentially doesn't want to post anymore.
Nemo was another popular poster who stopped posting after some contentious postings.

Contentious postings can do it. I get along fine with this group but deleted my account with another because if I tried to express my opinion on certain hot button items there were people who would jump on me, make untrue assumptions about my opinions and no matter what I said to explain my point of view it would get twisted again. After just ducking out of a couple of those discussions, I decided the last time to leave that Board. I still "lurk" because I care about how many of them are doing but will not re-activate my account.

And sometimes people leave because the same discussions happen over and over: Should I pay off my mortgage? When should I start SS? Which Medicare plan, etc. Mods and other posters are good about pointing people to earlier discussions but some people may drift away because they think there's nothing new.

I have never met him, but I've chatted with him a bit and I think he is a great guy too. Anyway, if you're worried, try PM'ing him. From my experience/observation, he only logs in every so many months at this point, but I'm sure he will respond eventually.

I don't know if it is due to contentious posts or something else, but I do know that some people get sick of this forum in some way and leave. Not sure if that was the case with TromboneAl, but I used to enjoy his posts a lot. His youtube channel gets updated so I know he's doing alright. He just doesn't come here anymore.

There was this person... I can't recall his username, but he used to be a VP of some major bank... I think he said he was leaving because he was tired of reading about the same discussions over and over.

Forums sometimes get tired. CityData has turned into one of those forums. Used to have some good discussions. Now it seems to attract the lunatic fringe.

Danmar perhaps?

Yep, many longer term ER members that are comfortably in retirement just get tired of reading the same topics and comments over and over again and drift off into other things. Some good new threads but mostly repeats, I don't spend nearly as much time on the forum as I used to.

I understand people taking a break. It’s refreshing to limit one’s time online. I’ve recently quit several forums, Facebook, and instagram. It feels great. Now down to er.org and 1 other.

I got kicked off of CityData because I supposedly sent spam messages. I tried telling them that I hadn't, but got no response. I don't miss it. I don't even lurk there.

Yes, the less moderated communities tend toward the cesspool. If one has a thick skin, they can be somewhat helpful at times, but not comfortable. Moderation of communities is an inexact science; even with a lot of thought and consensus, mistakes are made and often actions to smooth feathers of one are taken more personally than needed.

Agree with that 100%.

I was scolded by a mod for posting a current event in the current event forum. He told me if I wanted to gripe, go elsewhere. So I did.

I'm on email with Nemo2. He's ok and still is cooking up travel plans.

I miss reading about Nemo2 and his DW's travels. Please tell him that I said hi and if he is posting about his travel adventures elsewhere, please let me know. Thanks.

That is a second here. Always enjoyed his posts. Ask him to at least come back once in a while.

As with some other long time posters who stop posting, I believe there was contentiousness with his last posts.

Today was a nice day, and I happened upon about 20 gallons of old paint (long story).

For some reason, I thought of RayInPenn's stories, and in my mind I started writing a story from the perspective of a bucket of paint, sitting in a closet for 13 years.

But I'm not a writer. I'd love to give the outline to Ray (maybe add a bit of rainy weather) and see what he would come up with.

I got nothing except: "Oh thank goodness! I've been in that closet for 13 years! Now I'm old, hard and dried up. You are too late. I'm dyi..."

See. Told you it wasn't as good as RayInPenn's stories.

But the paint didn't die. Instead of being found by your typical house painter, and used to paint the inside of the closet, it was actually found by a very talented artist. The artist took pity on that can of paint, restored it to "life" and was inspired by the paint to create a masterpiece.

But not just any masterpiece, rather an amazing mural, in the center of town, across from a school. The mural brings joy to the people of town and the children as they go to and from school, who look up at it with admiration. And the paint - instead of being confined to the inside of a closet, looks down upon the people and the children of the town every day with wonder and gratitude at its new "life."

How about the paint is regular wall paint - but instead of being found by your typical house painter, and used to paint the inside of the closet, is actually found by a very talented artist. The artist takes pity on that can of paint, restores it to "life" and is inspired to create a masterpiece.

I love this. Just the suggestion of this story makes me smile.

I took about 8 or 12 months off from here back in 2020. (not that anybody seemed to notice. heh!)

I just got busy with a lot of other personal things and found myself working too hard to explain myself to SGOTI here. I have a character flaw (since sixth grade) where I assume people know where I'm coming from. The short of it was that it was just taking up too much of my time.

Also, I found the same questions from newbies while most of my own questions had been answered long ago.

I love this forum though--the only forum I'm on--and I'm back visiting two or three times a day, but find that there is less that interests me and what I have to offer is negligible.

I agree with all you have said. I also really like this forum and the people on it. I also don't have much to offer in the fine details of finances but love to be part of threads with my experiences, thoughts and views.
