I currently have three personal credit cards, three personal debit cards, and one business debit card. That's 7 cards. I don't like it and will be reducing them to 4 personal cards, and no business cards within a year.

I was wondering how many credit cards people commonly have.

5 credit cards which are all employed to maximize rewards. 1 debit card just for ATM usage.

3 credit, 2 debit. Which credit I use depends on which rewards are best. For example, I have a Target cc that I only use at Target since that give 5% back on the spot. Then there's the Amazon Chase for Amazon cashback purchases and Whole Foods 5% cash back. Yes, I'm a rat in a maze :(.

Two that I carry. One that sits on Amazon for the 5% discount. One old Amazon card I don't use anymore. Then a few from Home Depot and other retailers that gave them out with big discounts on first purchases. They sit just sit in a box.

So probably 7 or 8 plus a debit card.

2 US cards, 1 US debit card, 2 UK cards, 1 UK debit card.

Debit cards only used for ATMs

3 credit cards. An American Express Blue, A Bank of America Visa, and an Amazon Chase Visa. Currently, I use the Amazon Chase Visa for everything, as it offers the best rewards. The other two are sitting idle. I don't even carry them with me in my wallet.

One debit. Six credit. Visa, Mastercard, Amex.

I do not carry all of them around. Two are used only when we travel internationally or buy products on line in currencies other than our own. Most often travel products.

A third one is our combined Costco membership and MasterCard.

The remaining three we use depending on what we are buying One of which I never carry and only use to a few times a year to keep the card benefits and avoid a charge for non use.

Six. I use one almost exclusively, but charge at least one thing a year on each of the others just to keep them active.

Four. America Airlines and Hilton cards are in the drawer unless I'm using them for that brand; I've already spent enough to get the sign-on bonus for each. I use the Costco Visa for travel, gas and restaurants and the Fidelity Visa for everything else.

Five. I am thinking about applying for a sixth for the cash rewards, but concerned about whether being retired would count against me.

Six, but only three are used regularly. One is the Amazon card, one is a Sears M/C that I've had since 1972 (it was my first cc, and the only one for years) and they periodically have decent but not great rewards, and a Capital One card, and that one includes a dozen or so "virtual cards" that I use online with specific vendors such as Home Depot. The others I only use once in a great while just to let them know I'm still alive.

Four credit cards and one debit card.

Workhorse is Citi DoubleBack card... 1% when charged and 1% when paid, but if you use rewards to apply to your balance then that doesn't get the 1% when paid... so the net credit is 1.98% on everything.

We also have Sam's Club credit card that we use for gas... 5% rebate on gas anywhere... but credit must be used for Sam's Club purchases. We had a BJ's credit card for 10c off of gas at BJs.

I also have a Wells Fargo credit card that I use for DM purchases sine she also has Wells Fargo checking account and I can reimburse myself for her charges by paying the charges from that checking account.

We also have debit cards from our credit union that we rarely use.

Two credit (both w rewards), one debit. Every additional card is just another privacy/hack vulnerability IMO. Less is more…

Currently 9 as I'm doing the credit card rewards travel game.
  • 1 card is my oldest card that doesn't have an annual fee. Keeping that for credit history. Rarely used.
  • 1 card my bank waives the annual fee as a perk. Infrequently used.
  • 2 hotel cards that each provide one free night at a Marriott which basically at minimum covers their annual fees. Only used when paying for anything during a Marriott stay.
  • 1 card that provides an annual companion airfare pass which basically pays for the annual fee. Mainly used for Costco.
  • 1 card for lounge access and has some of the better multipliers and offers. Regularly used.
  • 1 card with no annual fee and no forex fee but I'm thinking about dumping it and for another solution for the the forex fee issue. Rarely used now.
  • 1 card I'm working through the spend for the welcome bonus. Used regularly.
  • 1 card I'm looking to dump when it comes up for renewal. Rarely used now.

One. Second from my bank which I rarely use - use the debit card instead. The third is a commercial card used for 'the farm'.

Heh heh heh - pretty much the rewards card and the bank debit card.

We have 6 credit cards, One is for autopay only, one is for DM’s expenses, one is for Amazon, one is for DW, one is for me, and one is for no good reason at all (Apple pay CC).

Five, 2 of which are gas co cards, plus 2 debit. The CCs get paid in full automatically every month.

Should not count against you. I received additional cash rewards cards while retired and they seemed much more interested in the credit score.

Ah Sears. My mother had a Sears store card. I was named after my mother. When DH and I applied for a mortgage a dispute with Sears came up on my credit report which I had to rectify. After a bit of back and forth (can't remember which service) I queried the rep, and how old would i have been when you claim I incurred that charge? The charge was removed.

3 - one card for common expenses. One card in her name and one in my name for funny money expenditures. It’s worked for us for 25 years. We never argue about money and with three, there is plenty of redundancy.

I would advise that everyone have at least two cards. My main card was compromised last month, so the bank had to cancel it and send me a new one, which took about a week. I have almost all my regular expenses on autopay through that card, and there were several payment dates coming up in the week I was without it, so I had to quickly switch them to one of my alternates. It could have been a real problem if I had no other card.

Thank you. My credit score is usually slightly over 800 (no revolving credit). I'll give it a try.
