Please, not a thread to argue the merits of TT vs alternatives. There have been/are/will be plenty of those.

For those of us who have decided to use TurboTax for 2023.

I know I got a very good discount last year on 12/28, so I am hoping I will see something like 30% off plus a $10 Amazon gift card again this year (so 40% off if you use Amazon anyway). Amazon offered a similar deal around Black Friday/Cyber Monday (effectively $62.99 for Premier vs $105 list price) but now the discount is about half that above amount and without the gift card.

Whoever sees the big discount again here sound off, it's worth 20 points. Redeemable TBD.

My Fidelity copy never came through, I didn't even think an additional 30 seconds about it and bought on Amazon. TT Deluxe Fed+State $55.99

The other cheap place I know - Costco. Currently $55.99 and includes $10 Credit In-Product...*Includes $10 credit for one of these in-product add-ons: State E-file fees, additional state, product upgrade or Audit Defense. Limit one per license code. Offer valid for Tax Year 2023 TurboTax Desktop products only & expires 10/31/24.

The Costco offer gets better tomorrow. I have a sale paper. It will be $11 or more off depending on the version.

Thanks. I think Amazon moves in response to Costco, or vice versa. Prices match almost to the penny but Amazon is more valuable to me as I can use a $10 Amazon gift card, I don't have any use for a $10 Intuit credit.

My Sam's Club shows $55.88 (disc, deluxe plus 1 state) and the $10 in-product credit.

So far, for me that looks like the best del cost wise.

I'll give a few hours to see if Amazon makes a better move, but if not, guess I'll pull the trigger.

Not sure if you file state taxes, but if you do, you can use it against the electronic filing fee.

I file State via snail mail for 66 cents. I'm retired, I have couple minutes to print, and stuff papers in an envelope.

It has to be much easier for states if taxpayers file electronically, but they charge a substantial premium for the option? While charging nothing for the far less productive paper option. Must be a job protection measure...

I think it's hilarious that members here, many of whom are multi-millionaires, go semi-nuts trying to save a few pennies on a software package that is cheap anyway.

We're all suckers for Thaler's transaction utility: https://thetroublewitheconomics.com...-richard-thaler-and-mental-accounting-part-2/

Reminds me of a news story I saw about LeBron James' Miami Heat teammates (back when he was in Miami) thought it was funny when LeBron avoid using his mobile phone as he didn't want to get socked with roaming charges on his cell phone.

As for Turbotax, I consider state e-filing with Turbotax a splurge, so I'll go that route. I just want my taxes done and filed after TT already calculated everthing. But, a penny saved is a penny earned when buying a copy :).

I used to print and mail my state, but got lazy and now I just get it all done while sitting at the computer. I also got burned during COVID. Admittedly, that was a Federal mail in but I just feel more comfortable now just doing it electronically.

FWIW, it was a Fed return that I did for a friend but I didn’t have any more of the 5 electronic files left. Now I buy H&R Block to do their returns. They’re very simple returns of three adult children of a good friend. He gets his done with his business return, so I don’t touch his.

@Midpack, thanks for starting this thread. I too am waiting for the deal.

For those that are astonished that we are trying to save a buck or two, there is a reason why we were able to save all those millions…

A Download Procedural Question, if I may --

For a first-time TT download on a purchase thru Amazon, should I already have established my Intuit login ??

You can set up an intuit account after the download but best to do it before you actually install it.

That's the best deal I have found, as well.

Last year, on Amazon, it was about $45, with a $10 Amazon card, so net: $35. That was on 12/28. So I might wait a few days, but $45 net looks like it might be the best we get this year. Since I efile state, the $10 is a real savings to me.

That's when and where I got my best deal on TT Premier last year too. I'd wait too. I'm pretty sure Premier will drop to $72.99 (net $62.99 again less $10 Amazon gift card - so $20 off today's Amazon discount price), and something comparable for Deluxe like above.

If my memory serves me right (which is dicey), I think once the calendar turns over to a new year, the TT sales pretty much ended on Amazon. But like I said, dicey.

Could very well be. However, I know Costco doesn't put out their best TT offers until late Jan/early Feb - if my dicey memory serves from when I bought physical disks.

That is good to know.

All about market timing in this situation :).

I’ll keep an eye on this thread as I could use a copy for the kids return. Unfortunately even if I mail in their state this year it’s gonna cost more. Postage is going up to 68 cents January 1.

Thanks for starting the thread. Looking back at my history, I ordered on Dec 28, 2022, Dec 29, 2021, and Dec 26 2020. So if the discount repeats, it can be any day.

A long time ago I bought TurboTax from Costco, but I prefer to order the downloadable version from Amazon. I get their gift card and if I need to redownload an older version it's in the software library on Amazon.

And I agree with you, it's no effort to save a few dollars, so why not?

Following this thread since I’m a TurboTax user and always prefer to save a couple of bucks if possible.

How do updates work when you purchase a download? There were some glitches that didnt get fixed until early Feb-I used the online version in the past year.

Every time that you launch TT, it looks to see if you have the most up-to-date version. If not, it prompts you to download the update.
