Did Maximillion get deep sixed?

He decided the U. S. of A. is too easy a target. Now he's on the early retirement forum for Zimbabwe. That's a challenging country to make fun of.

On the flip side, its an easy target for declarations of canadian supremacy, and he can tell them about random stocks he's bought that he did well with. I was always waiting for him to tell us about something that was GOING to do well.

What else can you say about a guy whose coworkers took up a pool as to whether or not he wore a wig, and had a guy volunteer to yank his hair to see whether it was or not...

I quit reading his stuff long ago, but at the time he didn't seem very interested in early retirement or finance, and he lived to troll with the Canada vs. U.S. thing. For my part, he was on the edge, but he was not actually "deep sixed" by the board. I understand he's still active at his Canada finance board. I'm sure it must be better than this U.S.-based one. :-\

If so can someone explain why?

Hmm, nobody has given you a straight answer.   Does that mean people are embarrassed by the truth?   Nah, it probably just means they're more tactful than I am.  :)

Nords put on his moderator hat, publically castigated the guy, and like a couple of other publically castigated posters, Max probably thought posting here became too work-like after that.

Personally, I was ambivalent / apathetic.   I feel that obnoxious posters add a bit of color to the place, and gawd knows that a board about retirement needs color to survive.   At the same time, I'm sure the mods eventually reach a point when the burden of certain posters becomes too heavy, and this place becomes work-like for them.

Dory36 posted a nice "can't we all just get along?" thread in the Forum Admin section that provides a philosophical foundation for crowd control here.

Thanks OAP for the opening to correct something.

There seems to be a misconception about folks getting censored or "deep-sixed".

While the volunteers helping moderate the forum will do what is needed to keep things under control, draconian steps have been few and far between.

We have "deep sized" only one spammer. He (or she) didn't honor requests to take it easy, and the message to him was "Take a break - don't barge in with get-rich-quick schemes".

We blocked one user who never posted but either due to some technical glitch or perhaps due to a "robot" trying to copy the entire forum, was crippling the server. The message to him was "Something wrong with your connection - it was flooding the server with dozens of simultaneous requests - please email ____________to get back on..."

We blocked one user login because we became aware that someone else was posting using that login, without the knowledge or permission of the member (and we so notified the member, who had not been around for a while anyway.)

Finally, there were a total of three others who have been deep sixed "for cause".  In each case, the cause was a prolonged continuous and obvious effort to disrupt the forum without providing anything meaningful to the forum other than diatribes. In every case, there were many dozens of complaints over long periods of time, there were repeated public and private requests to ease up, and things continued to go downhill.

That's the grand total, out of nearly 2500 members.

Just thought I'd throw that out, since OAP opened the door.

am now in the process of renegotiation with the publisher for a " Street Bums of San Francisco" coffee table book.

Maybe you two should collaborate and publish a "Colorful Obnoxious Bums of the FIRE Forum" book. Make it scratch 'n sniff to give it some real atmosphere... ;)

Just thougt the board was robust enough to do battle with MAX.

Guess a couple of our uber-alles posters wanted to talk more about their surfing and ugly little kid than issues. Go figure.

Max, I enjoyed the exchanges. Especially since you knew Geordie.

Hey, talk like that can get you your own moderator gig.

As for Max, you know where to find him.

Yeah,
I guess I can.

Good bye.

Great board and enjoyed every minute.

But being invited to leave is, well, invited to leave.

Nah, nobody invited you to leave. You don't get off that easy.

You can make all the surfing-related cracks you want, but if you don't surf then there's no way that you could offend a surfer. Besides if I was living in your neighborhood then I'd be grumpy at having to surf in a quarter-inch of neoprene too.

You know where to find Max if you want to chat with him. You're not restricted to just one discussion board per user and you're welcome to stay here. Max is also welcome to post here if he can make a constructive contribution, but apparently he found it easier to stalk off in a huff than to make a commitment. It was never very clear to me why he was here in the first place. Unlike Max I remember you coming here many moons ago to sort out your ER plans and you've made your share of contributions.

My point is that any of the 2000+ lurkers & posters on this board can gripe about its ambiance or its policies or the other posters, but only a few of us have chosen to do something about it-- or at least to make a financial contribution. You're welcome to let Dory know what you're willing to do to help. You wanna vote with your feet, fine. Or you can stay here and keep contributing. You're welcome to stay, so the choice is yours...

Ouch, couldn't go with the can't surf slam.

I surfed Sebastian Inlet for almost 5 years, 12-17. I can surf you *******.

Does any of this matter?

People come and go on boards on a regular basis. I don't think I'd miss some tht arre still here. If you want to flush me, I'd survive.

I'll take that as a friendly term of endearment. Next we'll have to debate the relative merits of our longboards...

I'm curious-- what caused you to stop surfing?
