Happy Women's Equality Day!

I had no idea my thread would take the direction it has. Honestly, I wish I hadn't started this discussion. I only wanted to point out women got the vote 89 years ago which is celebrated on August 26th - my birthday. I also felt it appropriate to add my Great Grandmother's experiences as a suffragette in Kansas to the discussion. My fatal mistake was posting the Wikipedia link in the OP. At the time, I thought the link added to the understanding of the topic.

I find it remarkable how few comments centered on the actual topic I presented - women winning the right to vote in 1920. Instead, this has turned into a discussion on how men are treated unfairly.

For the record, I do think men often bear an unfair burden. I don't like it any more than the unfair treatment of any person. Clearly we have a long way to go in understanding each other.

Peace:flowers:

Fair enough. But as you well know, any thread is an invitation to threadjacking. I prefer to think of it as thread piracy. Arrr, mateys, prepare to be boarded!

Random thoughts: We're having youth of America tear up and replace our sidewalk. Last week a healthy AmerInd looking gal was working a concrete bar, a 6' long, 1 1/4" thick steel bar for prying up slabs of 5" thick concrete. Today she's swinging a sledge to pop the chunks apart. Notable because she's a she, but she's doing the job. Well. Ooohrah! My gal cooks and cleans, I do dishes and replace toilets, put down pets. Either of us can do the other jobs, but it works the way it is. I've seen the work she does and the relative compensation - she has this PollyAnna idea that merit is automatically compensated fairly and that she need not ask for her due. I think of that as a female trait.

Were there a need and I was down there is no doubt she would turn into a rabid wolverine. Think of that as sort of a female trait as well.

Pirates are pretty good, but a true threadjacking must include....bacon. ;)

Ok, who wants to be keel-hauled first?
.

Nice beam to length ratio, I'd volunteer for the hauling across her beam.

DW would likely impose the death sentence.

Ok, so NOW who wants to be keel-hauled first and skewered second?
.

Be careful what you ask for. Do we really want to get into a discussion of the impact of female voting on the quality of leaders elected? Representative samples:

Pre: Jefferson, Lincoln
Post: LBJ, Carter

Ducking out now . . .

Adam Lambert who was in the musical The Ten Commandments with Val Kilmer who was in Heat with Robert Dinero who was in Sleepers with KEVIN BACON!

Who’s Adam Lambert? Runner up on American Idol. I’m a fan. And yes, I know he’s gay. Who cares with his voice and looks (hey, if this thread’s getting’ hijacked, I’m sending it in a direction of interest to the Purrzinski)

He is rather captivating...isn't he? (as I put my tongue back in my mouth)

Purron, that last photo reminds me of my teen idol, Paul Young. I got to see him live in Charlotte when I was 13...bestill my heart!

I can see the gay porn spammers queuing up to register as we speak...

Doubtful. Adam was discussed quite a bit on the American Idol thread during the season and, far as I can tell, the gay porn spammers haven't showed up in droves....yet;)

As a middle aged gay dude, I admit to being put off by Adam Labert's aggressive androgyny. I am no fan of his, but did think that his rendition of "Ring of Fire" was amazingly original, and so weird that it was wonderful. Johnny Cash is probably rolling in his grave.

Speaking of Johnny Cash (as long as we're into thread drift, why not go for it!) I once ran into him at the airport in Miami - literally. I rounded a corner just as he was doing the same from the opposite direction.

My lasting impression was, man is that guy tall! His stovepipe boots came up almost to my waist...

Guess he was looking for his wife because every 5 minutes for the past half hour I heard, "Paging June Carter Cash, paging June Carter Cash. Please contact your party at the nearest white courtesy phone."

IndependentlyPoor: I loved Ring of Fire too. However, I doubt Johnny's rolling in his grave. He was a rebel and, after so many years in show biz, I doubt he would have been shocked by a gay artist. Also, his last big hit was a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song. For those not familiar with NIN, suffice it to say their music has raised many an eyebrow and doesn't quite fit in at the Grand Olde Opry. Here's Johnny covering Hurt by NIN:

Johnny won numerous awards for this song which was one of his last recordings before his death. RIP Johnny.

Purron, that whole album of Johnny Cash's was remarkably original.

Independent, I don't have TV, but that rendition of Ring of Fire would probably been cool with the Man in Black, just as Purron said.

Oh, and in another direction of thread drift:

Hey ladies...anyone ever taken a self defense class? I'm signing up for 6 weeks of Krav Maga starting in a couple of weeks. DH has been taking it for a month or so now, and I'm intrigued.

Krav Maga was developed by the Israeli army as an unarmed self defense technique that I think is properly called a mixed martial art. Less emphasis on form and more on getting the opponent down and out.

Thoughts?
