Not a Poll, but it could have been. This would be for your main home that you reside in for tax purposes not any rental or vacation properties you may own. I thought it would be interesting to compare by home build year, home size and state.

I was calculating how much our home cost to run and how much increase there would be in 2023. I recon it will be 25% more this year. I will not know exactly till December as we have not had our Home insurance bill yet.

These would be Mandatory expenses that one has to live. does not include Medical, Vacations etc. Just what it cost to keep a roof over your head.

Here are what I came up with, some may have other expenses some may have less. Size of home and State may also be useful to know.

Built 2002 - 3,300sqft Home in Florida Coastal Location.

1) Mortgage, if one has one.
2) Rent if one rents their home
3) HOA if one has one
4) Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance if applicable
5) Electricity
6) Gas
7) Water
8) Internet (This is really a Mandatory Expense) Cable & TV however may not be.
9) Umbrella, Auto, Flood & Home Insurance
10) Pest Control
11) HVAC Maintenance Contract
12) Property Tax
13) General Home Maintenance; HVAC, Pool, Roof, Windows, Painting Ect.

I have attached our spreadsheet of what I track and the totals for 2022 are:

$24,378 for the year or $2031 per month.

I don't categorize in the same way, we probably all have our own budget line items - but following your format best I can:

Built 2016 - 3,128 sqft ranch w bonus up in NC.

Category | 2022 | per Month
Prop Tax|$3,820|$318
Insurance (home only)|$1,687|$141
Electric|$1,387|$116
Gas|$1,106|$92
HOA|$991|$83
Landscaping|$834|$70
Water|$750|$63
Internet (alone)|$628|$52
Pest Control|$559|$47
Other (gutter cleaning, etc.)|$451|$38
Lawn|$446|$37
Security|$332|$28
HVAC|$201|$17
Totals | $13,192 | $1,099

I have also left off any unusual expenses like roof or major system replacements, as they are large, sporadic and would be "amortized" over a much longer period for any meaningful comparisons.

I don't track things to that level of detail but a quick back of the envelope estimate is about $1200 mo. I crossed out things that I don't need/pay for. BTW, I wouldn't include auto insurance as a main home cost, but I did for this exercise.

Built 1951 - 1,150sqft Home in Dallas Texas.

1) Mortgage, if one has one. $0
2) Rent if one rents their home $0
3) HOA if one has one $0
4) Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance if applicable $20 (self + plants)
5) Electricity $125
6) Gas $60

11) HVAC Maintenance Contract $20 (self + filters)
12) Property Tax $550
13) General Home Maintenance; HVAC, Pool, Roof, Windows, Painting Ect. $20 (self+parts/paint)

$14,856 for the year or $1,238 per month.

You made me look....utilities, insurance, HOA, maintenance, property taxes for the past 12 months $14,566

Here's a rough estimate:
Crownsville, MD. Original house built in 1968, heavily remodeled in 2008. Something like 2440 square feet above grade, plus a 960 square foot basement. I'd call it "semi-finished". It was finished, by 1968 standards, but when they redid the house in '08, a lot of that was torn up. It's heated/cooled, somewhat, by the HVAC ducts that primarily service the main level. Oh, and there's a 432 square foot 3-season room. A couple outbuildings, and a 23x51 in-ground pool that's about 50,000 gallons.

So, here goes...
Mortgage: $1941/mo (principal/interest. 2.875%, 30 year fixed, $468K financed)
Property taxes: $457/mo (~$5600/yr)
Homeowner's ins: $242/mo (~$2900/yr...really jacked up this last time)
HOA: None
Landscaping/etc: $100/mo (probably overkill, but I figure a new plant here and there, fuel for the tractor, occasional maintenance/repair on the tractor)
Electric: Maybe $250/mo average
Oil: Perhaps $75/mo rough estimate. It's a backup for the main level heat pump, and I usually only need 1 fill up per year.
Water/Sewer: Say $30? I'm on well/septic, but I do need to get supplies for the water treatment system in the basement, and the septic tank needs to be pumped out every so often.
Internet/home phone/tv: $200 mo? My housemate pays that, and has a 3-pack bundle with Verizon Fios.
Swimming Pool: ~$230/mo: They come out once a week for about 4 months, plus opening/closing. Amortized over 12 months, it might be around $230.
General maintenance: $100/mo. Just a wild guess to cover my butt. I haven't had to do much of anything major in the 5 years I've been here.

So, overall, about $3625/mo. Or $43,500 per year.

1) Mortgage- $700/month
[-]2) Rent if one rents their home[/-]
3) HOA- minimal
4) Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance- $70/month (all chemical applications, mowing when I travel, a few plants)

All utilities including Internet and cell phone $450/month
9) Umbrella, Auto, Flood & Home Insurance plus Property Taxes (I accumulate in same bucket)- $600/month
10) Pest Control -$30/month
11) HVAC Maintenance Contract $16/month
12) Property Tax- see above
13) General Home Maintenance; HVAC, Pool, Roof, Windows, Painting Etc.: Ah, that's the wild card and since some is discretionary (plantation shutters, upgrades such as quartz countertops) it varies depending on my other spending in the year. Maybe $10-$15K/year. Could be more next year since I want to replace a tub and shower.

So- excluding improvements and major maintenance, about $1,870/month. Not bad given the house I have and compared to what people are paying in rent for far less, but we put down about $140K of the $240K purchase price in 2015 so that kept the mortgage low.

Primary home f/retirement: about $53K per year, excluding mortgage. Constructed within last 20 yrs, +$1M market value, +3000sf, semi-rural, large parcel w/about 2-3 acres of landscaped lawn, fields, flower gardens, inground pool. Largest part of budget is prop taxes ($10K), gardening/landscaping/housekeeping ($15K), utilities/heating ($13K), prop insurance ($5K). Also, pool bugeted $5K as there is always something needs repair/replacement in addition to usual cleaning/opening/closing costs.

Since we are on a well and septic system the above costs do not reflect the expense of repairing/replacing pumps and other system components when they inevitably fail every few years.

EDIT: I failed to include umbrella and auto insurance plus the cleaning lady. Those bring the total to $15,504 or $1,292/mo.

House is 2505 sqft on 1/3 acre, built in 1857. Coastal Connecticut.

Home maintenance varies greatly. For example, if it is a painting year (usually every 8 to 10 years), that adds ~$20,000 to the cost that year

Nearly $1,200/month here for my condo, adding up all those categories.

I just ran these numbers a few weeks ago while I was considering bugging out and moving into a Retirement community apartment complex.

Utilities, insurance, furnace & A/C tune-ups, and general nit-noi things for the house I wouldn't buy if I were renting (furnace filters, can of paint now and then...) but not counting a major expense like a roof, or a driveway, or hot water tank.... just under $10,000 per year

3) HOA if one has one $0
4) Landscaping and Lawn Maintenance if applicable - $0 (except hiring our college son for major projects.)

$8121.

This is for a 2016 sf tract home built in 1963. No HOA association, no mello roos (a california thing that is like an additional property tax), we don't have too much problem with pests - but did pay $200 for gopher remediation last year, and in 2020 had to tent for termites.

I excluded the costs associated with our granny flat that is on our lot. Tenant pays utilities, we pay an extra landlord policy to cover the structure. We get $2600/month for rent - so it is very much a cash flow positive. But the property tax and water amounts were adjusted the same way we do on our taxes.

2007 built 3600 Sq ft.

1) Mortgage, if one has one. -0-
2) Rent if one rents their home -0-
3) HOA if one has one -$90-

1600 sqft home built in 1973. In the Florida Panhandle. I'm not sure the maintenance is enough but we did have a lot of external repairs done after hurricane Michael. I also didn't include auto.

Wow, I assumed we were paying a lot, but evidently our costs aren't out of line with many others here. We will be paying more in 2023 and beyond though for prop taxes, insurance and most everything else...:(

Built 1971; 1075 SF ranch; central NC

Total monthly costs: $687

This does not include new roof in 2020, new driveway and AC in 2022, etc.
