A 60/40 slice and dice portfolio would return 8.01% YTD.

Not YTD, but one year returns 11/30/04 - 11/30/05 Vanguard says is 9.8%. I used to doubt Vanguard's number but am gaining confidence in it. One of these days I'll do the math myself and be sure.

Spanky, does Vanguard's site give you YTD? I can't find it, but I could've sworn I've seen it before.

Of the 4 portfolios I've managed for the full 12 months all have met or exceeded the minimum goal of S&P plus 5%.
My very actively managed portfolio has a good shot at 15% not counting income from I-Bonds which equal 9% of total.

13.5% return : Stock: VEIPX/BRSIX/VTRIX/VWO Bond: PFUIX/PEBIX/TIP Other: VNQ/PCRIX/VGPMX

10% in each fund.

40% global stock, 30% FI, 30% Other (incl. Reits, commo., PM/mining equity)

Cheers!

Yes, YTD is available in the Personal Invstors homepage. You can change the list by following the "My Fund Watch List" link.

Here is the link for all their funds: http://flagship5.vanguard.com/VGApp/hnw/FundsByType

I notice that the holdings of Vanguard STAR Fund (VGSTX) are very similar to that of the slice and dice portfolio and returns the same YTD as of 10/22/05. It seems much simpler just to hold a single fund instead of so many.

Lessee, here's how my various accounts have fared over the past year...

401k with Boeing: +29.9%
401k with Fidelity: +8.7%
401k with Schwab: +11.5%

Scottrade account: +11%
American Century account: +8.7%
Janus account: +11.6%

Janus Roth IRA: +12.4%

So I'm not complaining too much! 8)

Wow, it seems that most of the posted returns beat that of the S&P500 (6.4%). You guys are good. Hmmm, may be we should have a different benchmark - the ER forum benchmark comprised of a multi-asset portfolio.

70% in JHancock 401k -18.9%

30% Vanguard Roth -

More like the ER Forum Benchmark of Those Who Did Well This Year. Either we're all great or we get quiet when we underperform.

I'm surprised at my performance this year and decided to use Spanky's Vanguard watchlist tip to figure out why:

Allocation | YTD | Adjusted YTD | Fund
----------- -------- ------------- -----------------------------------------
49.2% 6.54% 3.22% VSMGX LifeStrategy Mod Growth
23.2% 7.54% 1.75% VWELX Wellington
11.9% 12.78% 1.52% VGSIX REIT Index
7.1% - - Cash / MM (insignificant return)
4.5% 11.51% 0.52% VEXMX Extended Mkt Index Inv
4.1% 15.87% 0.65% VGTSX Total Int'l Stock Index
--------
7.66%

Erm, I'm missing something there. My distributions and gains are 9.4% of last year's balance plus this year's contributions, so I would expect my return to be at least 9.4%. (Vanguard says it's 9.8% year-over-year, not YTD though.) I used to think I was good at math, but I can't seem to make sense of ROI lately. The above number is what my current allocation of funds performed YTD; my personal rate should be somewhat different based on a rebalance and new contributions, but I didn't expect it to be that far off.

I'll play with the numbers a bit and edit this if I find something obvious.

EDIT: The difference must be December 2004 as that is included in my 9.4/9.6% numbers and not included in the table in this post. Periodic contributions affect the numbers, too, and I think I reallocated in ealry 2005 (but it may have been 2004...time has flown lately).

A little over 10% in portfolio appreciation coupled with about 3% paid dividends, most of which are qualified.

11.02% My international and energy funds were the big winners.

Up 15.8% as of 22 Dec.

Thank you, Paine Webber Tweedy Browne!

As of yesterday, 10.3% as calculated by MS Money. Includes cash, funds, stocks, options, everything.

More importantly, our brokerage account did better than our mutual funds, so now maybe I can get the wife to invest some of her IRA money that's been sitting in a money market fund for the last 5 years.

15% on the real estate (75% of the wad)

~2% on the rest

Glad to see all the double digit % returns when the DOW is a push for the year.

Around 4.5% to 5% on short term or very conservative stuff.
7%+ on junk and Hi-yield.
Real estate? Not sure, but it is way up, I do know that.
