It's Wednesday weigh ins! 2007-2022

I'm back on WW with DW. 5 weeks ago I hit 232 lbs. and the warning sirens went off (I'm 6' 2").

So this morning I was 218.5, just 38.5 lbs to go!

Well done Laurence. I did WW at work 5 years ago and it suited me to a tee. I hope you stick with it. I lost 50lb over 9 months then eased back and have maintained my current weigh ever since. I still have the book and calculator and every time my weight drifts up, I do the journaling thing for a few weeks to get back down.

I'm 6'1" and weighed 210. Got down to 161 but that quickly went back up to 170 and I try to keep in the 168 - 172 range.

Once you've trained your stomach to smaller portions it gets a lot easier.

oh.. weighed in today at 172 again. Bit disappointed as I'm off to England in 3 weeks for a 2 week vacation and have been trying to get to below 170 before the over-indulgence begins

Hey Laurence, I just listened to a great podcast about a guy that went on WW core plan--pretty incredible results. It is called Jonathan's Healthy Groove podcast. You might check it out for some WW inspiration. Good luck!
You've dropped a lot in just 5 weeks--that is cool!
Sarah

thanks for the reference Sarah. I've just been listening, and yes, it is very well done indeed.

I Gotta Get In On This

Ok, I just came across this and I gotta get in on it. You guys are having too much fun and success, and I want in.

I'm about five foot nine and weigh around 185. I am down from 195, which is good, but I was down to about 170 last year. My ideal weight is right around 170. 170 is probably just outside of my optimal BMI, but that is really where I feel most comfortable.

DW has been kicking me out of bed at 5 am 4 days a week for a 3 mile run. This combined with cutting back on portion size and calories seems to work well. In fact, the biggest boost to our weightloss could probably be attributed to only eating out once a week. We have found that when we eat out there are too many hidden calories. Plus I cut out almost all the alcohol from my diet, which has probably made me excessively dull.

Hopefully I won't blow all of my recent success this weekend.

Ted

Dropped another lb this week, now at 171, so feeling good, but it's the exercise that doing it. Played tennis 5 days out of the last 8 and it's not so much the weight loss but the lasting "high" I get out of playing. Both the guys I play with are well matched so we have plenty of close games and we are all out there for the fun of it.

Ted, your story about getting up at 5am and doing your thing is just great - I admire you, the only time I tried that sort of thing was very limited over a 6 month period. At age 40 I had a stress test (through the work health program) and I had the results of a 30yr old. I tore my knee up shortly afterwards and stopped exercising (I was a soccer ref. ). At 43 I was on a 5-day management course which included a daily health program. Before we came we were told to bring the blood work results of our last physical. The doctor running the heath portion of the course had us do some physical tests plus some mental agility tests and along with our blood work typed the results into a program and told each of us our "health age". Mine came out at age 40 and so I was determined to do something about it because in my eyes I had "lost" 7 years in the last 3 years.

We were given a website and account name and encouraged to do a health program then run the physical and mental tests on ourselves again, enter the new results and see how much we had improved. So for 6 months I got up at 5:30 and did 30 minutes of exercises. For me this was agony, but I persisted then at the end of the 6 months, I did the tests, logged on and entered them and was so disappointed to see no change at all. But this was the first time I had seen what he set up and when I looked at the Triglycerides I thought they looked very high. So i looked up the results and discovered he had made a typo and they were 10 times higher than they should have been. I corrected the mistake and my health age dropped 7 years.

so, 6 months of misery caused by a typo :bat:

Ted, I feel your pain.. I too have reduced alcohol intake and run 4 - 5 days a week. I've reached a plateau so unfortunately I am going to have to start eating less.. and no beers with this weekend's barbque. ... On the positive side I am wearing slacks which I have not been able to fit in for 5 years !

Alan, wow that is pain. I think if that happened to me I'd be pretty disgruntled. Thanks for sharing your experience. The funny thing about the 5 AM workouts is that it is really tough for me to get out of bed and that first 1/4 mile pretty much sucks. But then I find my stride and it doesn't seem to be so bad. I guess the toughest part for me is overcoming the inertia. We didn't run today, we usually take Fridays off, and I can already tell that I don't have the energy and mental sharpness I had the last 4 days.

XYZ, have you tried altering your workouts? I found last year, when I initially dropped 45#'s, that when I started to plateau my workouts were becoming mundane. So I started doing more cross-training. For instance, on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday DW and I would run. On Monday and Wednesday we would lift weights (low weight, high reps). And then on Saturday we would either hike, bike, kayak or do anything else that seemed like fun. We have always taken Fridays off because by the end of the week we are usually pretty burned out from work. We are starting to work our way back into that system, but are just trying to get the cardio workouts back up to speed.

Question for the group: What is it that derails your weightloss or weight maintenance? And how do you get back on track?

Ted

What derails my weight maintenance? Drinking, no question. :)

Getting on the scale everyday and making sure I'm within a couple of pounds of my goal weight reminds me that if I'm going to have some beers tonight, I better eat light today. What is interesting is that now that the big losses have been made, it is easy to keep within about 3-4 lbs of the goal weight, even if we have a few big-eating days.

Good luck and good job on the losses!
Sarah

Ok weighed in at 199 this morning... One day later than my goal but I will take it... Next stop 180 by the end of September.... I have an incredibly stressful month ahead meeting with the chairman of the corp I work at on Tuesday to present a proposal...wobble wobble (those would be my knees shaking). Some business travel this month coming and finally vacation!

What derails my weight maintenance?

Business travel and business meals. When I'm RE'd I'm sure there will be some other reasons, but that is what does it for me at present. In July and August I haven't done much travel but have been working lots of long days to complete a project so have been missing the daily trip to the gymn after work and snacking during the day.

BUT - despite this last few weeks I have lost the 10lb I wanted to lose after my trips to India, Spain, England and Canada in March - May

Weighed in at 172 this morming. Was goping to be a few lbs lighter before leaving on vacation on Saturday for 2 weeks to England. Overeating and drinking is a certainity. Exercise is very dependent on the weather

Have not made it back to gym since returning from vacation. Do not own a scale. I am confident there was no positive change (=loss) - great food in Yosemite and a rib festival in Reno! YUM!! (not to mention "complimentary" (ha!) Blue Moon or Midori sours in the casinos!) :duh:

Weighing in at 199 this week .. No More No Less.. Still running confident I will be down a bit by weekend.

211.5, I was down to 209.5, dang fluctuations!

Training for a half marathon in November, now I have the delecate balancing act of eating enough to have engergy to complete the training, and eating too much and gaining...

I'm on vacation in England so can't weigh in. Eating and drinking plenty but the weather is fabulous so we've done lots of walking each day to perhaps compensate a little ;).

Laurence, concentrate on good quality lean protein (fish, poultry, whey powder) and lots of veggies. I usually have 2-3 (cooked weight) 4 oz servings a day of lean protein and fill in with fruit and veggies. Good luck with the 1/2 marathon--I wish I could run! Congrats on such a great goal! My boss is doing a 1/2 ironman next year in Cali--the Seal one. Sounds horrible to lazy me!

I am still at 145, but refocusing this month on working my muscles to failure more. I am going to have bodyfat tested again in December, and I'm really hoping to see a big improvement over the 29% from June.

Maintenance is hard, and lacks the thrills of losing every week. Good luck to those who travel--that is the hardest trial imaginable for a dieter!

i fattened up watching mom die. hey, gotta blame someone. got up to, yikes, 222 lbs or so. within two months after funeral i was down to 214 lbs & 19% body fat. but the holidays depressed me and that sourdough loaf some "friend" brought over didn't help any. i'm back up to 219 lbs 20% bf, damn!

my goal is 200#s 14-16% bf, maybe i could get to 190#s 10-12% bf but by then i'm body sculpting and i doubt i'm that ambitious. though i suppose i could write it off as an er hobby.

tommorow marks one year since my mom died. still can't believe it. just got back from the unveiling ceremony for her stone and memory. she always kept such a great figure her entire life and so i'm sure she'd love to know that i'm down to 208 lbs and 18% body fat. i am well on my way to svelte.

Thanks Sarah, at this point I know what I'm supposed to do and just get weak.

208 lbs this week, late weigh in, but at least I'm making progress! The runs have been hard.

Ireland chips and beer 'dun me in' and I am up about 4 lbs from my all-time low this summer. Oh well, it was worth it. Time to get back on the treadmill, and lay off the chocolates :)

I can't believe you're all still here!!

Hey y'all, I'm back. I was retiredbop previously, but just used my regular screen name so it's one less thing to have to remember.

I gained 8 pounds over the summer. Up to 333. Back on the wagon now that the race/teaching season is over. Hope to hit 300 before New Year's. Have to cruise back and see how you've all been doing.

Time to get back on the treadmill, and lay off the chocolates :)

just as approaching my weight goal, mallomars come back into season. is there no end to the tease and the torment?

1st day back after2 weeks in England. Like Bob, lots of fish and chips washed down with plenty of beer. Despite trying to offset this with lots of walking (the weather was fantastic) I've still put on 5lb from when I left - but it was worth it :D

Its tough keeping the pounds off when going to the pubs. I have the same issue, but my evil is trays of pizza.

Mike, just keep after it--you'll drop those summer pounds! And hey, while you were gone--I can now do three "real man" pushups in a row! Yes sir! I've got some (tiny) guns going here! :)

I finally went through the closet this weekend and donated all the larger sizes--what a pile of clothes! I'm staying within 3 lbs of 145 pretty much solid, learning to apply the 80/20 rule where we eat right most of the time and then splurge, maybe one night a week. That is keeping us about right weight-wise. And we can still drink beer--but I've become a much cheaper date! Now, if I could replace those six-packs with a six-pack!
