Lost and (not) Found

Well I am down to 7 teaspoons (out of 12).

But besides those, probably garden pruners. I know how to find them though: Buy new ones, they will turn up within 3 days.

Lost me darn house keys two days ago. On the chain was my library card, my gym card, my bike share key, and a mini usb with a bunch of executables. I'm holding off a few days to see if they pop up before replacing all that stuff. What a PITA, but easier than a wallet with driver's license and CCs.

Within the last week or so I lost my backup external drive. Not a huge problem; it was mostly a backup of DH's computer, which I just backed up to cloud storage on Carbonite, and some backups form my laptop, which I just copied onto an external drive and need to put on DH's computer so I can back those up to the cloud, too. (Carbonite charges a separate subscription for each device.) I know it's in the house somewhere.

My happy lost-and-found story: back in the 1970s I'd spied a ring in the estate section of a jewelry store. The center stone was an turquoise and nothing special but I liked the setting. When I had the turquoise replaced with a sapphire, it turned out that the setting was handmade of platinum and yes, the small diamonds on the side were real and of good quality. I paid $58 for the original ring. (Why can I remember that but not where I put my external drive last week?)

It disappeared one day and I really missed it. A couple of years later I found it in a compartment of my briefcase- this was a flexible open model, not the hard-sided type and all I can figure is that one day it fell off the desk and landed in one of the inner pockets of the briefcase.

This year I have lost two unusual kitchen items I have had for at least 30 years.

The first is an odd fork. It has a thick black coating on the handle to insulate my hand from any heat, making it handy to use while cooking. It fell behind the oven, I think. I pulled out the oven and shone a light back there but didn't see it.

The other is a rare 1/8 cup measuring cup which came as part of a set of measuring cups. Because of its small size, it was handy when scooping out small quantities from jars or bottles with narrow openings. I think it fell into the garbage so it's gone. I have a second set of measuring cups which go down to 1/4 cup, so if I had lost any of my larger cups, I have a replacement on hand already. Bummer. I know 1/8 cup is equal to 2 Tablespoons but it's the cup's scooping feature I liked more.

I twice left a bag on the NYC subway. Both times, an expensive-looking leather bag containing mostly work papers, some items with my address and personal items (no wallet or credit cards, thankfully). I filled out a claim form, but never gonna see that again, right? Well, not the first time, but the second time, about two months after losing it, I got a postcard from the MTA telling me it was at the Lost & Found. Miracles happen! (I remember it contained a library book, which I was very glad to return. It would have been way overdue, but I'd renewed it a few times in the naive hope it would turn up or that the finder might return it.)

Years ago I also left a briefcase on a bus, which I realized about 30 seconds later, so I started chasing the bus, first on foot, then in a taxi. When I caught up to the bus, a woman sitting in the back was holding it. When I said it was mine she turned it over without a word. Later, I found several personal items inside it, apparently belonging to the finder.

Cannot find the replacement bulb to our full spectrum lamp. We've both looked a dozen times, haven't found it - but we're certain we have one. I'm about to order one...

...except I couldn't find my Best of Cat Stevens CD a few years back. After two years I bought another copy. Only to find the first behind my nightstand accidently a few weeks later.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr (mildly)

I would'nt be surprised if someone had a law named after them:"as soon as you replace a lost item, you find the lost item". Brandi's law, Gibson's law, etc.

I coached my son's soccer teams when they were younger, and often borrowed soccer books from our library. One of the books I checked out on game strategy simply disappeared. I looked everywhere, but it was gone. I paid about $20 to the library to replace it.

About 5 years later, after my eldest son left for college, we found the book in the back of his closet covered up by clothing he had grown out of years earlier.
And that was when we took him off the will.............

That would be Cole's Law. Named after the guy who first lost a bowl of sliced cabbage.
