Anyone here been there?

Thinking about going in a few weeks for a three week trip (I know, too short).

Any thoughts or experiences to share? Would love to hear!

Closest I got was Ile de la Reunion.......tried to organize a trip to Madagascar from Saudi in the late 1980s, but flights were difficult to coordinate, and the 'Islamic Republic of the Comoros' (or whatever they called themselves at the time), (supposedly) handled visas for Madagascar and they didn't respond to phone calls or mail.

I've heard that the island has been, or is being, rapidly deforested.........be interested in seeing your pics/hearing your opinions when you return.

Maybe it's my own biased American opinion, but I would stick to the USA, and other westernized countries...

But if you do indeed get back safe, let us know.

Excellent advice. That's why I've never even left my home state.

Lol! Me, too. Who knows what you might find out about those "non-Westernized" folks. <eye roll>

Speaking of...please note that Kazakstan just announced they are eliminating the visa requirement for USA and UK (among others) passport holders. Make your vacation plans now!

To the OP: I'd actually love to go to Madagascar some day. Keep us posted on your research. :)

My sister has been and loved it. We'd love to go to see their unque nature.

Travelover - uh, did you choose the right user name?

Good thinking. All of those billions who want to live in America would probably squat in your house.

Sent from somewhere in the world with whatever device I can get my hands on.

Yet, travelover loves to travel. :) I guess he has crisscrossed his state so many times, he has traveled over all the roads and streets of his state.

Hey, I wonder how one gets to be a Google camera car driver. That job will get you through every street in a city all right. Travelover will get to map out his entire state, while getting paid for it. I wonder how much ground a driver is supposed to cover in a day. I have seen Google cars in my neighborhood twice. And indeed the Streetview of my home has been updated more than once.

It is safer too. A few years ago, there was a story about a Google car being chased and pelted with rock by irate inhabitants of a small town in Europe. People were PO'ed because they felt their privacy was invaded.

Back on Madagascar, I remember reading that this island has some unique fauna and flora due to its isolation. They speak French, so better refresh your knowledge of the language before you go. I think the OP knows French, however.

I have not been to Madagascar but friends who have been there highly recommend it.

One friend made some investments there in 2008 - he made a fortune (tens of millions) when he sold his business in Madagascar to some Korean investors a couple of years later. He was already wealthy and "retired" but he says the 18 months he was in business in Madagascar was the most profitable in his career.

I hear that, besides the flora and fauna, most of which can only be found in Madagascar, that the scuba diving is top-notch. I also hear that it is a PITA to get to. Would love to hear your experiences if you decide to go.

^ Yep, road/traffic fatalities will get you long before the terrorists do, statistically speaking :)

I haven't made it to Madagascar- but its on the list :)
