MGM Grand Settlement

Consider how many members of Congress are lawyers.
Consider how much of the taxpayers money Congress handles and obviously some of them have it stick to their fingers.
Consider that anyone can sue anyone else about almost anything and the lawyers on both sides make money.

I think the best answer is greedy lawyers.

It's not a new problem and perhaps Mark Twain said it best:
First, we hang all the lawyers.

I don't know why the OP is upset about this settlement. I actually suspect that as soon as this massacre happened the next day staffs of criminal law companies were already gathering info on the victims and how to contact them so they could start suing, etc. If MGM chose to settle it was probably the cheapest way to put this all behind.

And I have to ask - "So what?"

Before I retired I was one of the instructors at an annual computer forensics conference in FL every year. In the course of that conference we brought in lots and lots of gear in metal cases, many if not most indistinguishable from gun cases. Really, inside those cases we could have brought in enough explosives to level the hotel, if not the town. Well, at least a block or so.

The point being that I'm sure in a hotel setting it is not at all uncommon for conference attendees to bring in amounts of luggage far in excess of what is needed for changing clothes. So someone bringing in lots of luggage wouldn't raise any eyebrows.

It’s certainly possible that a conference attendee could have lots of luggage. This guy was known to the hotel, and thus was unlikely to be mistaken for a conference attendee.

I hate ambulance chasers. But hotel security apparently felt that his actions weren’t noteworthy, when a little curiosity might have saved a few lives...

Knock, knock. “Housekeeping. We need to check your hvac unit.”

"Here, let me help you with those bags. So you say you enjoy cleaning guns when you are away on vacation? Well, what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas. Have a great day!"

I don't know about OP, but he may believe as I do. MGM grand doesn't actually pay the settlement. We do. YMMV

Emphatically Concur

As a trial attorney who has litigated many premises liability and personal injury cases I am the rare exception who emphatically agrees. These are the kind of BS claims that drive up the cost of doing business and hence the cost of goods and services for consumers. Americans always want to blame someone and can't accept that sometimes **** just happens.

A landowner or business owner is not obligated to protect invitees and customers from all harms/loss. They are only liable for foreseeable risks and owe only a reasonable duty of care under the "prudent man" circumstances. This incident sure as hell wasn't foreseeable and MGM cannot and should not be legally obligated to ensure the safety of everyone under all circumstances.

As a trial attorney myself I am often embarrassed by my colleagues and their willingness to pursue claims, no matter how misplaced. And to use the threat of costly and protracted litigation to extract settlements from businesses and insurers. It's disgusting and only hurts us all in the long run. Unfortunately it will continue in the foreseeable future until and unless Americans start practicing and accepting personal and individual responsibility. [MOD EDIT]

What kind of personal and individual responsibility should the victims and their families have practiced in this case?

Unless you mean they should just go away quietly?

How do we pay the settlement?

If it's paid by the insurnace company then we all pay with higher premiums. If it's paid by the hotel/casino then we all pay with higher room costs etc...
