RIP Richie Havens

Richie Havens and James Gang toured together in 1971 and came to our campus. Best $3.00 I ever spent. Less than 15' away from him when he sang Freedom. Thanks for the good times, RIP Richie Havens.

My favorite, a haunting song he wrote.

"...knowing through Satan's earth-bound magic,
many more would have to die..."

"...how we bowed and knelt down,
how we worshipped well
When it came to listening,
we listened little, if at all"

Tickets to Woodstock were $4.00 for the weekend :)

One of my favorite cuts from Woodstock...

Wow, I missed this news. Sad.

From wiki:

As the festival's first performer, he held the crowd for nearly three hours. In part, Havens was told to continue playing, because many artists scheduled to perform after him were delayed in reaching the festival location with highways at a virtual standstill. He was called back for several encores. Having run out of tunes, he improvised a song based on the old spiritual "Motherless Child" that became "Freedom".

Hard to believe the energy he gives after 3 hours of playing. Incredible.

Anyone know how he lost his teeth at that age ( ~ 28 YO at Woodstock)?
