Road Trips 2023

Two road trips planned this year.
First is to Kansas City area for a five day conference mid June.
Will take several additional days before/after to visit people and see stuff. I've done variations on this trip many times already.
Will probably take the Mustang on this trip...

How long is your drive from home to Las Vegas? If it needs a few nights of hotel stays, why not fly?
~1400 miles, depending on route. More if I take any side trips along the way. If I'm traveling by myself, I may only stop a few hours along the way.

I don't like air travel, I did enough of that when I was working. Far too many hassles for me. Matter of fact, I wouldn't travel by air even if it was for free... Hey wait a minute, it is free. The casinos pay my travel cost, no matter if I travel by air or ground.

We just returned from a 4,200 mile ski/road trip from San Diego to Revelstoke, BC, Banff where we skied Sunshine and Lake Louise then onto Big Sky in Montana and our last ski place was Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We had very cold weather in Canada and a lot of snow at many of the resorts, but had great skiing and our 2018 4WD Tundra did great. H and I had many great travel days listening to music or podcasts or just talking. It was a wonderful trip.

Sounds like a great trip!

Getting ready to do our Hill Country road trip to see the Texas wildflowers after many many years.

I wanted to show off our new Road Trip Companion. Used it on the Corpus trip and it worked very well. Has both AC adapter as well as DC connections so you can take it inside and still use it. And in case you are wondering our Tesla could power this for over a month. Daily power consumption is almost negligible.

Best feature: no ice needed! And it does have a Bluetooth connection so you can monitor status from your phone if you wish. This one is 25 liters. We’ll probably get a larger one with wheels for really long road trips.

^^ That's what I should have purchased instead of the Yeti cooler that I have to reload with ice every day.
DH was so very tired of dealing with the ice and the draining and all the wet contents. When DSIL was crowing about how great theirs was on a long trip, we knew it was time. This is the Alpicool brand - other Tesla owners said it worked well. Another oddity is our DC is 16V rather than 12 and people reported it worked fine.

I know what your DH was going through. I've seen small 12v coolers that run in F-150's (our travel vehicle) that can keep a few bottles of water cold. I need to look into this.

And as far as bringing cold water into the hotel each night - Hampton Inns give a couple waters when you check in and most times the rooms have little fridges. It would be much simpler if I didn't need to haul the cooler in and out and get/ drain ice.

We still take it in to the room because we’re often eating out of it for breakfast and dinner, and depending on the room facilities we can decide whether to use it plugged in or load the fridge.

There is a large selection of sizes and several brands.

Makes sense if you have the room for more than 1 night. About half of our nightly stops are 1 night only, so we aren't eating much if anything out of ours. I count on those delicious Hampton Inn breakfasts before hitting the road.

We've been road tripping for about 20 years. Had a plan to road trip through every state. We have 6 more states to road trip through - the southeast and North Dakota. We'll hit ND this summer, but planning an Illinois - Arizona - Florida - east coast trip for late winter/ early spring next year.

Yes, those breakfasts are great. Lunch so often a snack, and then a modest dinner before bedtime. Saves money too!

That’s when we use it - for the 1 night stops. We generally just don’t care for the hotel breakfasts - rare exceptions. And we make our own coffee, carry cream, etc.

Destination is usually a vacation rental house or condo or such so we have a full kitchen and unload into that.

Yep about the same for us. Lunch either a snack, or grab something light from McDonalds at a noon time bathroom stop. I'll try to find a good modest dinner spot ahead of time on yelp or TripAdvisor.

We have one of these and really like it..use it to take perishable foods to our park trailer at the lake and then plug it in on the screen porch to fill with beer...we got ours from Costco.

I need to know where you are planning for MN!!!

We’re on a road trip now. Illinois to Arizona stay there a while. Then to Dallas for a while. Then home.

Another road trip Illinois to Colorado/ Wyoming in the summer.

Another road trip to Glacier in late summer.

Maybe a fall color road trip. Most of our trips are road trips

Come by the shop when in Dallas!

Did a spring break with DGD (first one without mom) to DeGray Lake, Hot Springs & Little Missouri falls in AR. Really quiet and great sunsets. We did the lake resort, but I'm planning to convert the van for short trips and van camping in the future. Already have the chuck box made...

Thinking NH via 95 and the eastern shore/Cape May ferry this summer. Might come back through the Appalachians... first try at an itinerary staying a meaningful time with friends along the way and other stops got longer than I may want to be gone so still kicking around the details. I will ride with friends in their RV from here to Memphis and then to VA via Asheville in the fall. I'll stay in VA a bit longer visiting family and then fly home.

We are heading out on another ski trip to Mammoth on April 2nd with D1, her fiance and their husky dog. With more than 600 inches of snow and more snow coming next week we want to keep our ski season going as long as possible! D2 can't join us on this trip because of work so we will make another quick weekend trip to Mammoth before the end of April to finish our ski season.

That's a great car camping kitchen!

Just booked campsites in Sequoa/Kings Canyon for July. We're already booked for Yosemite in June. Personally, I would have combined the two trips, but it's a group of family/friends and they wanted to do two separate trips. My sister likes to plan a camping trip each month.

We're not getting out of California - but California is a big state with pretty diverse biomes.

I'm currently planning a "preemptive hurricane road trip" for the fall. I want to try to get out of dodge for the worst of the season here in Florida - September and part of October.

I'm eyeing up a path going up through Atlanta and then further north, eventually ending up the Great Smoky Mountains National Park for the fall foilage mid/late October.

We hope to find a couple cool housesits - hopefully northern Georgia and/or Asheville for September/early October, and then somewhere near the park for mid October. We will fill the gaps in between housesits with regular lodging or maybe an RV rental in the park, if there is availability.

I have a ton of research to do to figure all of this out...looking forward to it. I love planning out our vacations. Retirement is grand!
