Fiat Chrysler to pay Tesla hundreds of millions for European emissions credits

Fiat Chrysler (FCA) has reached a deal with Tesla to count the California carmaker’s EVs as part of the FCA fleet in order to avoid paying fines for violating new European Union emissions rules. The Financial Times reported that the deal is worth “hundreds of millions of euros.”

If you spend any time on the Twitter hashtag $TslaQ, you know what this means to Tesla short sellers. They believe the lots full of new Model 3s — and Models S and X vehicles, too — show Tesla has reached a cliff in demand for its vehicles. When the rest of the world finally admits the company’s days as a fast-growth story are numbered, they say, its stock price will crash, creating a bonanza for investors who, like Machine Planet, have bet big that Tesla’s shares are grossly overvalued.

I have no idea if they are right or wrong but they sure do seem to irritate Elon Musk.

Oh gosh! I would not risk running the gauntlet whenever I go grocery shopping with it.
 
A few years ago we were lucky enough to go to the GP of Houston long gone . We went as guests of the Roger Penske team Porsche Spyder's . It was interesting as the purse for the closed wheel cars were very minimal but the research and the branding was worth it . Example Team Corvette had 3 bright yellow Corvettes . A guy said the engine trans. and drive train would cost 1mil racing for less then 10k . Now I see Tesla is starting a racing circuit for EV's

Kind of a joke a friend of ours , retired high EXXON official now his daily driver is some type of high end Lexus Hybrid . …………..He better watch his back !

But hybrid technology is what is going to help keep the ICE and gasoline alive for a very long time.

Hybrids improve gas mileage, therefore reducing pollution, and the regen braking reduces brake wear, just like an EV.

The best hybrids are probably less polluting than an EV, so that's a good thing. Most of the advantages of an EV w/o the disadvantages.

Well, I was confused also... I would say if you are in a Tesla thread and put down just Model S it will be assumed it is a Tesla... need to put the qualifier LEAF in front :LOL:

If you want to save a little gas and range anxiety is your number one concern, then hybrids are for you. I think they will be the gap-filler while new more capable pure EVs are rolled-out over the next few years. However, as charging networks and options continue to improve, range anxiety will become a non-factor. One other note, There are two types of hybrids; plug-in and standard. Plug-in hybrids still require a charging point to function at peak performance.

Pretty much agree, with a couple distinctions/matters-of-degree:

"Next few years"? I don't see hybrids as a "gap filler", but rather a product that will address a significant segment of the auto market, for the next decade and likely two decades.

I just dont see the infrastructure changing so fast that there won't still be plenty of people who will see a hybrid as a better match for their needs. Clearly, EVs will hit a larger market segment as things improve for them, that's a given. But getting that last 50%, 40%, 30%, 20% and so on into an EV-only family will be increasingly challenging. And I just don't think there will be that much motivation, considering how good hybrids are, and will become.

And past 10 years, maybe something new will be coming, that neither of us can see.

A friend in Vancouver WA bought a used Bolt with 2100 miles for $33k (minus the $7500 credit) and his wife drives it from the charger in his garage to the charger at the hospital in Portland. It serves the purpose very well. His car is a half-ton ICE.
 
Here is yet another example of the flexibility of the Over-The-Air/OTA software update features of Tesla. They can continue to get feedback and respond to the HUGE variety of ways people use the cars. The Tesla Model 3 can be used by grandmothers as well as by race/track car enthusiast (Actual Track Mode tuned with professional racer testing/input and other features described below).

It appears that Tesla is starting to release a number of new features that will make its vehicles more fun to drive on the track. Recent reports from Model 3 owners indicate that version 2019.12 includes optimizations for the electric cars’ high-speed performance and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS).

The updates being rolled out by Tesla were shared recently by Tesla Owners Online forum members and Model 3 owners dannyskim and MGallo, both of whom shared screenshots of 2019.12’s Release Notes. In its section for “High Speed Performance,” Tesla noted that “your car can now maintain torque and power for longer periods of time when driving at high speeds.” An update for the vehicles’ Tire Pressure Monitoring System was listed as well.

Just saw reference to the Tesla Powerwall 'Storm Watch' Mode on twitter. A user in FL stated their Powerwall recognized a weather event coming and automatically entered into 'Storm Watch'. Great automation idea that the users do not have to think about as the system handles it. Seems like a useful general idea that all these types of systems would/should have.

Here is what the Tesla website says about that.

Storm Watch
When a storm or severe weather is on the horizon, increasing the likelihood of a utility power outage, Powerwall triggers Storm Watch. This mode automatically charges Powerwall to maximum capacity so it can provide backup power.

The Tesla app notifies customers that Powerwall has activated Storm Watch. The mode remains active until the weather event ends, at which time the system returns to its previously selected mode.

I didn't see much (or any) discussion with respect to the content of the posting topic. Just "here's a good link to go look at".

Most of us don't have a clue what a "powerwall" is and why it's important, especially to the stock performance. It's (powerwall) never mentioned in the news when Tesla stock is the subject. Only the cars and the car factories (except the upper NY failed solar plant) are mentioned. Oh, the recent construction of China facility is pretty well known too.

Why not dig a little in the website and paste a pdf of the subject matter so us uninformed ones have some taste of where the message is?
