Let me tell you why:

1. I'm hooked and spend way too much time here.

2. Started a family young and started saving at an early age so was on they way to FI without you. Was just going along very patiently. Thanks to you the 12 years until retirement now seem like an eternity.

3. You folks have increased the risk in my FIRE plan because so many of you seem perfectly content on much less than I was planning accumulating. I may retire with much less than I originally planned.

4. I still like my job - but I like it much less thanks to you.

5. And finally - too many liberals on the board - just kidding!!!!!

Sure.

If you've been bitten by the FIRE bug and are on track to retire early (however you want to define "early"), then I'd suggest you spend more time on YouTube and less time here. It probably won't change your FIRE date much and may lessen your frustration.

I had the same problem. I would read all the fun retirement stories and get all excited and keep running my numbers through retirement calculators just to be sure I was on course. Being a golfer, I would slip off to golf websites for a change of pace.

You bring up a few good points expecially about too many liberals.

This forum is about "possibilities" and "alternatives." Before I stumbled onto this forum I thought it was "expected" to work until full retirement, save everything I could until then and hope I wouldn't die broke. Here I became more realistic in viewing how my assets would contribute to a lifestyle that would be sustainable for my expected lifetime. I also more closely evaluated my j*b and how it fits into a more enjoyable lifestyle. I am much more satisfied with my overall life than I was before I found this forum.

I also don't see any reason to not be drawing a paycheck at the present time. Personal reason keep DW and me trapped in Houston for the foreseeable future which limits my desire for "endless" free time. My j*b having lots of opportunities to take unpaid time off also reduces my incentive to retire.

Arc, don't let them talk you into anything... Some of these guys are professional martyrs ... they want to live on ' a buck 3-80'.
Not me ... I have a sizeable nest egg that allows me to do whatever I want, whenever I want ... short of that yacht that everyone keeps quoting (and maybe that if the market ever gets back in gear).
If you have a dinosaur size egg, it will give you a buffer, just in case you forgot something or the sh*t REALLY hits the fan, you have outs (you can alway cut back to 'those other guys' level).

WORK YOUR PLAN... You won't be sorry.
Don't try and live by anyone elses plan... their plans WORK FOR THEM, not necessarily for you.

All is good - if all goes as planned - I will have plenty - though it may indeed be less than originally planned. Looking forward to an active retirement with few sacrifices. Thanks for the warning!

Actually, I agree with Arc (except for the liberal part). I never even considered this step, but found this forum one day while frustrated and thinking their had to be a better way.

Some w*rk days are agony, especially since I wish I had come to this plan sooner.

But without the plan now the days of agony would go on for a lot longer.

For example, I brought home a boatload of work that I really need to do. Had every intention of getting it done today. And guess what I spend too much time doing? That's right - participatiing on this board! Just like last weekend.

+1. If I were a "young dreamer" I would value some of the advice available here but once I got my financial plan together I would beat a hasty retreat. Facing 30 years of work with daily reminders of the alternative would not be fun. I think I would come back a couple a years prior.

I think that many of us have found our way here because we are independant spirits (at least I am). Most of us have come to the conclusion and asked the question, "Who's life am I really living?" Like many others here, I refuse to accept that my purpose is to slave away for the majority of my life toiling for others, and not for myself. Once you have that decision and mindset made, the only question becomes, "Ok... now that I know what I want, and more importantly what I don't want, how do I achieve that?". And that is where this forum proves to be so useful. There are an almost infinite number of things that someone can do to help improve the odds of them being able to retire early. Most of them at some point or another are discussed here. All roads may not be the one for you.... but all roads here still lead inexorably to that early retirement dream...

Arc - I am working and a few years away myself. Although I've been a member for quite awhile, I try not to come here too often as it can be a bit of a downer wanting to be where a many of the posters are....however, balance is the key. One great thing is that only you know what will work for you and based on the variety here, there are many ways to go about RE. Just holding that goal in your mind and directing your actions to it will manifest it.
