Use only your phone wallet - has anybody come close.

When the power goes out, you cannot use gas pumps, and the checkout terminals at grocery stores and restaurants will be down. So, what do you propose to use this cash for? Or, am I missing something?

Also, one other thing, you go to self-checkout terminals at supermarkets, it seems more and more won't take cash.

I was just researching a trip and looking at parking spots in these old English towns and some of them say no cash, use the app.

Yes, I use ApplePay at Costco with my watch. Works great.

I’m going to have to try that. I haven’t used my watch yet for payment. Do you use the Costco Visa? I assume you have to have the Visa in your Apple wallet and then set your phone up to use that card. Should be pretty straightforward.

Yeah, if you really think about it, cash is only useful in certain specific situations... not in power outages. If it's a short outage, then places like grocery stores and gas stations just don't do any transactions, cash or otherwise. If it's an extended outage (a day or more), then I think people would go into hoarding/panic mode and no one would be selling anyone ANY food, fuel, or groceries for cash or gold.. or anything.

The only reason I like to keep some cash with me is for tipping, since this is by far still the preference for most tip recipients (valet parking attendants, hotel staff, airport shuttle drivers, etc.).

You set up which cards on your iPhone you want to be installed into the paired Apple Watch.

Then from the Watch, you can scroll with the crown dial to select which one to use.

What is nice is I used it on some toll booths in France to pay for autoroutes tolls.

Italy, you have to reach and insert your credit card because their autostrada toll booths don't have contactless.

But it's very easy to reach out with the Watch on your left wrist.

Yes, the Costco VISA is in both my iPhone and Apple Watch virtual wallets. I double click my lower right watch button, scroll (with finger on the watch face) to select the Costco VISA, then hold my wrist watch face down over the Costco card reader. Your wrist gets tapped by the watch to let you know it paid. Works great.

When you set up your Apple Watch you can select which iPhone credit cards you also want to have on your watch. The watch app on your phone lets you add them any time.

The funny thing is that I have never used ApplePay at a terminal with my phone! Watch is so convenient.

I assume you must use the Costco Visa only using Apple Pay at Costco. So I’ll have to scan my membership card, and then use AP - but it’s worth it to me.

Yes, I do have to scan my membership card first to start checkout. Then I put it away.

There is also a Costco phone app that shows the membership card. And you can scan this at a checkout register.

The only thing I use cash for these days is I keep a stack of $5s in my car and give to people asking for cash at intersections. I’m one of *those* people.

No you can use any Visa at Costco.

I use Chase Freedom Unlimited Visa in Apple Pay at Costco.

I use the Costco app to show my membership number. Scan the Costco app to start checkout then use Samsung pay on either my phone or watch to pay. I never need to get out an actual card.

No. Like many here, I’ve pared down what I carry and I’ve made use of some things by using my Apple wallet but there’s just no way to go fully digital. For one, if pulled over, I need to produce license, registration and insurance. Beyond that, many things don’t use Apple Pay or connect with the phone for payment. Plus, call me old, because I am, but I like to carry cash. I hardly use it anymore, but I always have a few hundred on me. Never know when some cash may be needed. Also, I haven’t gone to the casino since COVID, but I never pull out a debit/credit card in a casino. I’m only willing to lose the cash on hand.
Yep, I prefer some cash also. Occasionally ask for $2 bills at the bank, just to pass to youngsters working at the fast food joints. Lot's of fun with those. Also good for a few laughs at yard sales.

The upside of this thread for me is that it made me look in my wallet to see exactly what I had in there. Found a $50 Amex gift card that I had received on my birthday last year and had forgotten all about it!
Save it for your birthday this year and double up on the fun.

Yes, I did. I used to live in California, and not in the good part. I purchased a silicon cover from smart-ish. I can store in the pocket of the phone case three cards. I stored my health card, my ID and a credit card. I could put this in my pocket, and use Apple Pay as much as I could, carry my keys in the other pocket so my car works, and went without a purse for well over a year.

After I moved cross country, I was in a much safer place, and rethought some things and I am now carrying a purse again. Because women’s pockets tend not to be deep, or plentiful, women don’t generally look good with a ton of crap in their pockets.

The negative part is that if you are not careful with your cards in the pocket of the case you can easily push all of them out. I have been in the habit since I’ve had a cell phone to use something called a love handle which is an elastic strap with a plastic base that adheres to the case. I can just slip my finger through and whole on to the phone lightly. And weirdly my thumb rests on the slot where the cards would come out if I accidentally pushed them.

Forgot to add, even though I carry a purse, those cards stay in my smartest case. I’m just used to that now, and I have to take the phone out of my purse to plug it in so I have directions to go various places because I never like to go to the same way twice.

I'm one that has paired down the wallet to 2 credit cards, 1 debit card/ATM and Driver's license and some cash.

I do use ApplePay from time to time, but have not fully embraced it.

I'm surprised how many people say they keep their insurance cards in their paired down wallet. I feel like most insurance has an app for that...

I strive to keep the minimum number of cards in my wallet. I went from 1 to 2 credit cards after I was on a trip and my one card was compromised. The ATM card is just there in case I need cash (especially in foreign countries, best conversion rate).

I leave my medical insurance cards (Medicare, Supplemental, Part D) in the car glove box. I also have photos of them on my phone.

I carry a minimalistic metal wallet these days with the most frequently used pieces of plastic only. I'm an android person, and I use google wallet whenever I can, and always at gas stations having been skimmed a couple of times.

Cheers

Has anybody been able to ditch all or almost all of the stuff they carry in a physical wallet and use the wallet app on their phone exclusively?

I ask because on a recent trip I went to check in at a hotel and they insisted I produce the hotel chain’s physical credit card. They would not accept the card information in the Apple Wallet app even though I had initially made the reservation using that card to confirm payment. And, of course I still had to pull out a government issued ID card of some type.

I don’t object to proving I am whom I say I am. But, it would be nice not have to carry all this stuff around if I already have the information stored on my phone.

Do not trust smartphones and do not do transactions on them unless absolutely have to.

Most of my doctors' office staff insist on seeing my insurance cards on every visit. My 3 insurance cards are quite thin and the 3 cards equal about one credit card thickness without being as large in the other two dimensions. I have little fear of them being stolen as they have no value and are relatively easily replaced. YMMV

I keep pictures of them on my phone. That has worked for a decade and several doc, clinics and hospitals.

Good idea. I'll try that and be certain it is acceptable to them. Usually, they take my cards and keep them for anything from 2 to 15 minutes while they deal with phone calls, other patients, and other cards. Eventually they call me back and return my cards. Not sure a quick look at my phone would w*rk in such an environment. I'm actually kinda glad they have gone to a more efficient office (used to be 3 people - now one busy one.) YMMV
