Carlinkit 2.0 Wireless CarPlay Adapter USB for Factory Wired CarPlay Cars (Model Year: 2019 to 2020), Wireless CarPlay Dongle Convert Wired to Wireless CarPlay

The above device offers wireless Apple CarPlay for those of us who have the wired Car Play in our cars. Has anybody tried out this gadget or a similar device? If so how did it work?

Apparently, you plug this device into your cars USB port, start Safari on your phone, go through a few steps and then Presto Magico! CarPlay works in your car without having to plug the phone into the USB port. Of course, the phone won't charge either.

I don’t have CarPlay so I can’t comment on any experience with this but based on the small number of reviews it seems like the people who got it to work are happy with it, but there are a number of reviewers claiming it’s buggy.

It’s also out of stock with no indication of when it’s coming back so there may be something going on with it.

I don't know about that particular model, but I've talked with a few people who have used such adapters. The ones that had success said it was still sort of clumsy and awkward, but they were content. Others couldn't get it to work properly at all. Since they're also fairly expensive, I haven't had any interest in trying it.

I keep a short cable connected in my car and it's trivial to plug my phone into it. Since it also charges at the same time, kind of a no-brainer IMHO. I know that wireless CarPlay is coming, and is already here in some newer cars, so I can wait until my next vehicle.

Apple CarPlay needs the cord currently. You can use Bluetooth for music if you don't want to plug in.

Plugging in doesn’t cause me enough grief to justify the grief of trying to make something like that work. The newer cars have the wireless option, but I’m not going to get a new car in order to get that. Though if I was in the market that would be nice to have.

No, some cars have already implemented wireless CarPlay, and more are coming online.

my 2021 honda accord hybrid has wireless apple carplay. very easy to use. place phone in designated area for wireless charging and connecting.

This thread prompted me to search for reviews of these things. What I found was pretty much in line with what Braumeister said - it works for some but not so much for others. I was put off by the cost as well, besides the possibility that future OS revisions could screw things up. But some reviews were quite favorable. One mentioned that the cost was so low that it wasn't a big deal to experiment with, but the unit in question was somewhere around $130, meaning that reviewer certainly didn't believe in LBYM. :)

I tried one of them that was theoretically supposed to work with my car and had tons of positive reviews. I spent ~45min trying to get it to work and gave up when it turned everything on my CarPlay into Chinese. Thankfully it all reverted to English when I restarted the car, but that was enough for me to send it back. It would be great if it worked, but not ready for prime time yet, IME.

I have a 2021 model that not only doesn’t have wireless CarPlay, but apparently the iPhone 12 can’t use the charging pad. In digging, the issue is with the iPhone, not the car, but it’s very frustrating.
