In case anyone is looking for a really good monitor.
I bought a new monitor and the screen resolution I use is: 2560 x 1440

LG 32GN650-B Ultragear Gaming Monitor 32” QHD, 165Hz Refresh Rate, 1ms MBR, HDR 10, sRGB 95% Color Gamut, AMD FreeSync. Total was $327

Easy to put together, just 2 bolts with built in tool to tighten. The top of the stand snaps into the back of the monitor and there is a button you can press to release the stand if you want. The color and other settings are easy to adjust.

The stand is spring loaded and it is easy to raise or lower the height or if you want you can rotate the screen. The bottom of the screen is 2.75" to the desk and at it's highest it is 7 1/8th"
The stand is solid. I have mine on a woven placemat so I can turn it left or right easily.

It can go as high as 3840 x 2160 resolution but I find everything too small like the toolbars of programs.
The text is sharp.

I use Windows 7 on a desktop pc I put together in 2015. I have my desktop icons and text the size I want which is easy to adjust without having to log off again and again as you do in Windows 10.
I use Iconoid to keep the icons locked in place. Another good program is DesktopOK for windows 7 and 10.

I use a XFX Pine Group ATI AMD Radeon R9 200 series graphics card.
Max Resolution: ANALOG: 2048 x 1536 DIGITAL: 2560 x 1600 (DVI); 4096 x 2160 (HDMI; DP)
DisplayPort: 1 x DisplayPort 1.2
DVI: 2 x DVI-D
The DVI-D Port supports a maximum resolution of 1920x1200 @60Hz

Problem you may have: My screen refresh rate cannot be set higher then 60hz or 120hz even though my monitor is 144hz

Answer: The standard HDMI cable doesn’t support 144Hz. I had that problem so I had to buy new 10ft cables for under $15 at Amazon.

Display port cable should be able to but you may have a cable that needs to be replaced or your built-in graphics on the motherboard is unable to or the separate graphics card cannot.
My graphics card has Displayport 1.2 so can run at 144hz

You have to check all of these: PC, graphics card, monitor and cable to determine what screen resolution and refresh rate can be. Make sure your graphics card can handle 4k or even 8k resolution.

My computer motherboard shows in the manual:
The maximum supported resolution is 4096 x 2160 @24Hz or 2560 x 1600 @60Hz, but the actual resolutions supported are dependent on the monitor being used.

I have a separate graphics card that supports higher screen resolutions and it has a HDMI and a Displayport connection as does my monitor.

DisplayPort versions support different resolutions @ 144Hz
Version 1.2 up to 2560 x 1440
Version 1.4 up to 3840 x 2160
Version 2.0 Dual monitor up to 3840 x 2160

The DisplayPort 1.2 can output 1080p and 1440p resolutions at 144Hz, while DisplayPort 1.3 and 1.4 increased bandwidth to manage up to 240Hz at those same resolutions and up to 120Hz at 4K.

Confusing ain't it? : )

Also if you plug in the wrong cable your computer will be blowed up real good....

What cables I bought:
VESA Certified DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable 10ft/3M, JSAUX 1.2 DP Cable [4K@120Hz, 8K@30Hz, 2K@165Hz]
Gold-Plated Braided Ultra High Speed DisplayPort Cord for Laptop PC TV Gaming Monitor-Red
$14.99

HDMI Cable 10 ft [4K@60Hz,1440p@144Hz], Sweguard HDMI 2.0 Cable High Speed 18Gbps Gold Plated Nylon Braid HDMI Cord Support 3D,HDR,UHD 2160P,1080P,HDCP 2.2,ARC for Apple TV,Fire TV,Monitor,PS4,PC-Red
$11.99

Ah, I saw the res you use, and thought that was the res that came out of the box. I don't think that's a 4k unit though, those aren't priced under $700 really if they are also good gaming monitors.

Still, both are better than the 1080p's most of us have it we haven't gotten a new screen in a few years.

Even better, it's currently $249 at costco. (not sure it's 100% the same model, but all the same specs for res, refresh, etc.

DH is looking at it as a bridge before going for a 4K. He has a new PC arriving this week, and we have both here ready to do side-by-side to see if the 4k is really worth paying 3x the price.

Thanks for this thread and your message. Our computer monitor was starting to die, and I was thinking of a replacement before this thread. I bought it today at Costco and DH quickly installed it. It's works well for us, and much cheaper than the previous monitor, bought 8-10 years ago.
