To Those of You Born
1930 - 1979

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's & 70's!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints..

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes

Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?
Because we were always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day.
And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times,we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no internet and no chat rooms,
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.
Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them, CONGRATULATIONS!

I'm with you on this one. We were outside almost every day, sun or snow. Rainy day, maybe you built model airplanes in the house. No TV until I was a sophomore in high school, like 1952. And no one mentions this when they talk about the obesity problem in the country. They think kids should quit eating.

What is the point of this? The world has changed and so has the way we raise our kids. So what?

Me too!

Often from the SAME PERSON!

Being an old-timer, I've been on the "net" since usenet, but every new relative or friend that discovers the interweb has to resend all the urban myths, chain letters, etc.

Reminds me of a sig I stole from another forum:

Please use the comments to demonstrate your own ignorance, unfamiliarity with empirical data, ability to repeat discredited memes, and lack of respect for scientific knowledge. Also, be sure to create straw men and argue against things I have neither said nor even implied. Any irrelevancies you can mention will also be appreciated. Lastly, kindly forgo all civility in your discourse . . . you are, after all, anonymous.

Of course, all the kids who did die due to cars not having seat belts, or who swallowed dangerous medicines, or who lost eyes to BB guns or diseases borne in dog faeces, are not sending us e-mails saying how everyone is a bunch of wimps nowadays.

Everyone should be taught in school about the survivorship bias.

My best guy friend, more like a brother to me, is notorious for sending the same BS emails, sometimes identical ones within weeks of each other.
I have asked him to stop sending me the junk emails, all to no avail. I do not want to block him, but sheesh :(

oh dear...
after finding out that the email was so upsetting... wish I had died from eating the dog feces...

BTW... not street lights... gas lights...

Interesting article. Won't dispute the logic. Still, I can't help but get a chuckle out of early 70s TV shows like Hawaii 5-0 when they showed a pregnant lady drinking and smoking and not a comment or funny look is given about it. Also the scenes of people smoking on an airplane. I never was in such a situation as I wasn't old enough back then, but it probably would have ticked me off if I was the middle seat stuck between two smokers.

Boomers parried the attack of the preboomers and have them fleeing battle in a hasty and disorganized retreat. :)

Ha

We had to walk five miles uphill both ways through broken glass to get our email...
In the morning in the freezing snow and ice and coming home in hundred degree heat. Without shoes

Streetlights!! I wish we had streetlights, and the winter wind kept blowing out the candle...
You had candles! Luxury, I say. We rubbed sticks together.

Well, I get this email about three times an hour, and the electrons have to travel uphill to my PC :)
You had electrons. So fortunate - we only had protons.

Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

Oh, I used to love all the kids lying down in the back of the family station wagon with all the seats down and no seatbelts, watching out the back window as we drove home late from Grandma's house.

Terribly unsafe and we'd have been human missiles if we'd hit anything. But it's still a very fond memory.

Both electrons and protons carry charge, and can be useful. Having only neutrons, now that's true destitute. In fact, people did not even know they had neutrons until 1932.

Well, talk about being outnumbered.
I am a boomer, but being so old-fashioned that I found things in the list that I agreed with. And yes, I have received similar emails too.

Usually a wheel would come off a go-cart. Just like Ben-Hur.

Ha

I am neither a boomer (perish the thought) nor a pre-boomer. However, I do have two grade school age kids. I resent twaddle like the OP's chain email because it is an attack on parenting.

Yep, my kids have a different childhood than I did and are being raised somewhat differently than I was. It happens every generation.
