Songs about change

Big Yellow Taxiby Joni Mitchell

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel *, a boutique
And a swinging hot spot

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
Put 'em in a tree museum *
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer farmer
Put away that DDT * now
Give me spots on my apples
But leave me the birds and the bees
Please!

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Took away my old man

Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

"Turn! Turn! Turn!" The Byrds

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to be born, a time to die
A time to plant, a time to reap
A time to kill, a time to heal
A time to laugh, a time to weep

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to build up, a time to break down
A time to dance, a time to mourn
A time to cast away stones
A time to gather stones together

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time of war, a time of peace
A time of love, a time of hate
A time you may embrace
A time to refrain from embracing

To everything - turn, turn, turn
There is a season - turn, turn, turn
And a time for every purpose under heaven

A time to gain, a time to lose
A time to rend, a time to sew
A time to love, a time to hate
A time of peace, I swear it's not too late!

I think I've mentioned it before here, but I used to work right across the street from the parking lot she was singing about. The Garden Of Allah (which was before my time) was apparently quite a lovely place. The swinging hot spot she was singing about was most likely Pandora's Box - a nightclub at the corner of Sunset Blvd and Crescent Heights. The exact spot where it was is now a nondescript triangle of land in the intersection.

Decided to revive this thread as it seems to be the best one to post a video I found today.

Maybe some of you will remember the song when it came out decades ago.

"A Change Is Gonna Come" (Sam Cooke)

I was born by the river in a little tent
Oh, and just like the river I've been running ever since

It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gon' come, oh yes it will

It's been too hard living, but I'm afraid to die
'Cause I don't know what's up there beyond the sky

It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gon' come, oh yes it will

I go to the movie and I go down town
Somebody keep telling me don't hang around

It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gon' come, oh yes it will

Then I go to my brother
And I say, "Brother, help me please."
But he winds up knockin' me
Back down on my knees

There been times that I thought I couldn't last for long
But now I think I'm able to carry on

It's been a long, a long time coming
But I know a change gon' come, oh yes it will

Thanks for the info. I was checking it out on the map. It looks like the one good spot on Sunset that you could see a sunset. Right before it goes down the hill. I bet it was nice.

I also found this. Sad.

Thanks for posting this--DH and I listened to it and the 1969 version this morning. Nothing against the original, but the newer version you pisted is just amazing heard through the filter of a few decades.

What about songs about non-changes? Like "Je n'ai pas changé" sung by Julio Iglesias (don't know if he wrote it or not).

Or Billy Joel's "Just the way you are", which was written in 1977 and won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 79?

Je n'ai pas changé / I haven't changed

Je n'ai pas changé / I haven't changed
Je suis toujours ce jeune homme étranger / I am still that strange young man
Qui te chantait des romances / Who was singing love songs to you
Qui t'inventait des dimanches / Who was inventing sundays for you
Qui te faisait voyager / Who was making you travel
Je n'ai pas changé / I haven't changed
Je suis toujours ce garçon un peu fou / I am still that guy a bit crazy
Qui te parlait d'Amérique / Who told you about America
Mais n'était pas assez riche / But he wasn't rich enough
Pour t'emmener à Corfou / To take you to Corfu
