The freezing rain started later Thursday afternoon, didn't stop until 11 AM Friday morning. Miraculously, we still have power, but many in our neighborhood and all over the DFW area do not. So many, that the area power distribution company gave up on their fancy website that showed outages and estimates on a zoomable map. Around 5 PM today, they put a transparent tinted overlay over all of it, that in effect, says "we're working on it".
Major tree damage, some will be a total loss. I hope some will recover when it eventually melts, but wind rocking a multi-ton ice mass back and forth does not bode well for it. There will be an excess of seasoned Oak firewood in the area for next winter
I've never seen trees bend so far, all the way to the ground. Some won't be coming back up. The skyline has changed, where I used to see tall trees over houses, now I just see the house, with maybe a little bush sticking a little bit above the roofline, if that.
bbbamI, too bad about your tree. So far, the trees that have survived the ice without damage here are the ones that lose their leaves early. The more leaves on the tree, the more ice load and damage. Our Sweet Gum is standing proud and tall, encased in ice. It didn't have a leaf on it.
Some chance of more freezing precip tomorrow. Doesn't sound like any of it will start to melt until sometime next week. And to think we were wearing shorts on Wednesday and it was 80 and hot sun!
